EOTATO-FEELING AEPABATUS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 30, 1922.
Application filed. September 25,1920, Serial No. 412,681. Renewed April 15, 1922. Serial No. 553,010.
To all whom itmag concern:
Be it known that we, l-lUBnR'r J. CAPELL- MAN and ROBERT HAYrIUns'r, citizens of the United States, residing at South Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Potato-Peeling Apparatus, of which the fOllOWing is a specification.
This invention relates'to a potato peeling apparatus and has for its primary object the construction of an apparatus of this character that will peel potatoes in a clean manner and will not remove any of the eatable portion of the potato.
An object of the invention is to so act upon the skin of the potato thatthe same will be removed without disturbing the eatable portion of the potato.
Another object of the invention is to combine in a single apparatus means for removing the skin from the potatoes and a device for removing the eyes of the potatoes.
A feature of our invention is that in the rotation of the apparatus the potatoes will be acted upon for removing the skin.
lVith theseand other objects in view the invention will be better understood from the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein:
Fig. 1 is a top plan view of the apparatus.
Fig. 2 is an end elevation.
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view.
Fig. 4; is a sectional view through the receptacle.
Fig. 5 is a detailed sectional view.
Figs. 6 and 7 are detailed sectional views of the cutter.
Again referring to the drawing illustrating one construction of our invention the numeral 1 designates a receptacle consisting of a cylinder 2, end plates 8 and 4:. The cylinder consists of a body portion 5, and a cover 6 which forms substantially onehalf of the cylinder so that ready access may be a had to the potatoes in the receptacle for removing the eyes in a manner hereinafter described. Each end plate vis provided with a flange 7 to which the body portion 5 is secured and to which the cover 6 is clamped by the thumb screws 8. It will be noted that the cover is provided with slots 9 so shaped that by giving a slightturn to the thumb nut the cover may be clamped in place or may be allowed to be readily removed. It is, of course, understood any other suitable clamping device may be used for holding the cover in place'but the'main purpose to be accomplished is to allow the coverto be quickly clamped and-unclamped.
A. stub shaft 10 is provided with spaced collars 11 and has the flange 12 secured to the end plate 4:. A, second stub shaftl13 has the flange 14 bolted to the end plate 3.
water so that during the removing of the skin the potatoes may be subject to a washing action.
The stub shafts are supported for rotation by the stand 19 of any suitable construction but shown in the drawings as formed from strap iron. As far as we have proceeded it will be seen that by depositing a number of potatoes in the body portion of the cylinder and then clamping the cover in position, rotation of the receptacle by the handle 16 will cause a rubbing action to take place between the potatoes and the prongs 18 with the result that the prongs will quickly and efficiently remove the skin from the potatoes. To complete the operation it is necessary to remove the eyes from the potatoes and for this purpose we have shown a cutter 20 formed from the tube 21 of a size to rotate within the bore 15 and have one end formed into a number of blades 22 disposed within the receptacle, so that the potato can be I lifted and held .in engagement with the blades so that upon rotation of the handle 23 the cutting edges 24 will remove the eyes.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing it will be apparent that we provide an apparatus of simple, inexpensive construction which will remove the skin in a clean manner and in an economical manner due to the fact that very little, if any,xof the eatable portion of the potato is removed.
The novel manner of arranging the cutter with relation to the cylinder enables the eyes to be quickly removed.
It is, of course,to be understood that the invention may be constructed in various other manners and the parts associated in other relations and therefore, We do not desire to be limited in any manner except as set forth in the claims thereunto appended.
Having thus described our invention What We claim is:
1. A potato peeling apparatus comprising a receptacle having its interior I surface shaped to have a cutting action With the potatoes, a cover for the receptacle, hollow stub shafts projecting from the receptacle,
a stand for supporting the receptacle for rotation, a handle secured to one of the stub shafts, and a cutter mountedfor rotation in one of the shafts With the knives thereof disposed Within the receptacle for the purpose set forth.
2. In a potato peeling apparatus, a rotary receptacle, hollowstub shafts rotaloly sup HUBERT J. GAPELLMAN. noennr HAYnURsT.
