fAUTOMATIC SAFETY GAS SHUT-OFF.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom t may concern;
Be it known that I, Ismon B. Lesiiowirz, a citizen of the United States, residing at New-York, county of- New York, and `State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Safety Gas Shut-Onset which the followingris a specification.
his invention relates to improvements in devices for automatically cutting oil the supply of gas to a gas burner, 'particularly to improvements in devices-0f this kind with which a thermostat-ic controlling mechanism is used.
It is the principal objectof this invention to improve the existing devices of this kind to provide a device which is of simple construction andtherefore inexpensive to manufacture which however can -be readily applied tov any burner and which will positively act if required.
' Another'obj ect of the invention is the provision of a device of this type which employs a spring to hold the cock closed and which is under the control of a thermostatic mechanism iniiuenced by the heat yof the ame, when the device is vset to lhold ythe cock open, while it will be automatically closed upon the contraction of the thermostatic mechanism when the yflow oit gas is interrupted lor the flame is extinguished in any manner oth er than by closing the burner or gas supply valve, by a draft of air.y etc.
A still further object of" the invention is the provision ot'- a device of this type which is also well adapted for use with burners lusing gas mantles.
These and other objects will become more fully apparent as the description of the device proceeds, referencevbeing had to the accompanying drawing forming a material part of my invention, and in which:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a gas burner equipped 'with a device constructed according to the present invention.
Figure 2 is van end elevation thereof.
Figure 3 shows in fragmentary detail view 'the thermostatic operating mechanism.
Figure 4 is a view, similar to Figure lof a modified form of my invention, and
Figure 5 is a detail view illustrating a gas mantle adapted for use with my invention.
Referring to the drawing, the burner 10 of a as xture of the conventional type is attac ed te a pipe-line 11y leading theretir from any desired source of supply and in this pipe line a gas cock 12 is arranged having a rotary valve plug therein for the control of the gas supply to the burner 10.
The stem 13 of the plug is extended through the casing of the cock and carries at one end ahead 14 through which an operating rod 15 is passed, while its opposite end also projecting fromjthe casing carries a stop c0llar-16 secured on the stem by means of a screw 17 or the like and provid ed at its lower end with two spaced projections or noses 18 adapted Jco-engage a stop pin 19 centrally secured-between both noses 18 in the cock casing Lfor limiting the valve motion in either direction.
Intermediate its ends the rod 15 has secured thereto one end of a spring 20, the other end of which is secured by a screw 21 or the like to a U-shaped iframe 22 consisting of two parallel spaced, angular membersv held together by set screws `23 and 24 between which the burnerl() passes, which carries vat its upper end the usual top 25 from which the flame 26 issues. v
The spring 20 normally holds the valve i with the cock in its closed position, and the rod '15 has secured to its yrear end 27 an angular arm 28 carrying ahorizontally disposed roller 29 at its upper free end.
A pin 30 is secured between the upper ends of the angular member of the vtraine 22, and the hook-shaped end-320i? a thermostatic rod 34 is engaging the pin 30, while the opposite, also hook shaped end 33 oi. this rod 34 is engaging a pin 310i a rocker arm 35, pivotally secured near its upper end, as at 36 between the two members of the frame 22.
To the free front end of the operating rod 15 is attached a; depending chain 37 ending in a ball 38 for the purpose of operating rod 15 when it is desired to` set the rod for retaining the valve of cock 12 in its open position with the horizontal. roller 29 engaging'the lower side face of the rocker arm 35.
In the modification of my device illustrated in Figure 4 thev U-shaped frame consisting ot the two parallel spaced members is replaced by a solid casting 39fthrough a collar-40 of which the burner 41 is passed and held therein by a set screw 42.
The thermostatic rod 43 in this form has screw threaded ends 44 provided with right and left hand thread 45, one of which is screwed inte the upper and of the casting ing itself loose'. 5o y y descriptive only and not as restrictive `or while' the other is screwed into an operating arm 46 pivotally secured as at 47 to thev upper end of the opposite end of the casting. The device is otherwise constructed as described above with lrespect to the preferred form illustrated in Figure 1.
Figure 5 illustrates the application of the device toa burner 48 with which a mantle 50 the well known manner, has a longitudinal' slot 53 in whichy is guided the thermostatic rod 54. I
rllhe device operates as follows-n i By a pull on chainB? the valve of cock 12 is opened against the action of the spring 20 and the roller 29 is engaged with the side face of the rocker'arm' which is swung out laterally from the frame 22 in the manner illustrated in Figure 1 inorder to hold the valve of the cock in its open position to supply gas `to theburner 10 which has been ignited previously while the chain is held in order to heat the thermostatic rod 34'so that it expands and allows a swinging out of the arm l When now for one reason or the other,"the flame is extinguished without the gas flow being interrupted inthe customary manner,
by the closure of the gas supplyV cock, the
thermostatic rod will cool off and contract so that the arm 35-s swung' inwardly around its pivot 36 and the roller 29 is disengaged from the arm and allows the spring 20 to close the valve of cock 12.
The modified device illustrated in Figure 4 operates in similar manner, only the right and left hand thread at'the ends of the thermostatic rod 43 minimizing the lost motion due to the play of pins 30 andK 31 of the device illustrated in Figure land furtherto assist the expansion and contraction of the rod 43, and consequently to make the disengagement between roller 29 and arm 46 more positive. The casting 89 and tip holder 40 may also suitably be made in one piece to prevent any possibility of the device work- The above disclosureisto be `regarded as limitative of the invention, of :which ob viously an .embodiment may be constructed including many minor m'odicationswithout departing from the general scope hereinin- 'di'cated and hereinafter claimed.
I am aware that various devices for similar purposes have been the subject of prior invention and I do not desire the present invention to be confounded therewith, but what .with a gas fixture and a valved burner, a

1. In a device of the character described including a'thermostatic rod, in combination mantlechaving its lower metal socket longitudinally slotted for the reception of said thermostatic rod, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a device of the character described,
'in combination with `a gas fixture and a saidl rod, a frame, aspring-securedto said rod and said frame for normally holding c said valve closed, a rocker arm pivotally secured at its upper endto said frame, a thermostati'c rod held by said frame and a roller at the upper bent rear end of said "rod adapted to engage the rear face of 'said rocker arm to holdthe valve open when said thermostatic rod is heated, and tofbedisengaged from said rocker arm when said thermostatic rod is cooled o' upon the eX- tinguishing of the burner flame, to move' said rocker. arm against said frame, and allowing a closure of'psaid burner valve by its spring reception of s aid thermostatic rod.l
3.`In a dev-ice ofthe character described, in combination with. a gas fixture and a valved burner of a frame, a casting secured to said-burner, a thermostatic rod in ysaid frame having screw threaded ends with right and left hand screw thread, a means for normally holding saidburner vvalve closed, an operating rod for saidfvalve, a rocker arm pivoted to said casting at its upper end, adapted toibe engaged by said thermostatic 100 `rod below its pivot point, an angular end on said `valve operating'rod, a horizontal roller at the upper end of said rod adapted to engage the lower'side face of said rocker arm when said fthermostaticl rod is heated for 105 keeping the supply valve for ysaid burner valve open, said roller adapted to bedisyengaged from 'said rocker arm whenl said thermostatic rod is cooled off and contracted after the-flame of the burner is extinguished, said disengagement operating `means for normally holdingtheburner valve closed to shut off the supply of gas to said burner and an incandescentmantle having its metal socket slofttedfor the reception of said Vthermostaticfrod. .l
