To all wko/m t may concern Be it known thatwe, LINN BOYD yBENTON and Monms FULLER BENTON, both citizens of the United States, and both residents of Flainield7 county 'of Union, and State ot' New Jersey, have invented a certain new and useful Fonting Apparatus, of which the jollowing is a specification.-
The invention relates to apparatus for renting and distributing type, and more par# ticularly to the onting ot the specialv ii'orm of type employed in connection with composition and printing machines of the multigraph type, and is illustrated and described herein in connection with the particular iorm of type used in such machines,-but it is to be understood that the invention may be carried out in connection with other forms ot type. or with bodies other than type and which may be arranged in groups.
The objects o'l` the invention are to provide an apparatus of the character described in which type may be transferred 'trom one tubular magazine to another expeditiously and with certainty and without injury to the type; which will be positive in its ac,- tion; which will be or strong and rigid construction; which will be cheap to construct and which will not require skilled labor to operate.
These and further objects will more fully appear in the Yfollowing specification and accompanying drawings considered together or separately.
One embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which lilre parts in all ot the several figures are designated by similar characters ot ret erence, and in which- Fig. 1 is a side elevation of an apparatus embodying the invention.

The type employed in multigraph and other special forms of composing, printing and distributing machines, are of special shape, having short bodies a and with oppositely disposed notches Z) in the bodies. The type are ted into a tubular magazine c provided with a longitudinal slot l extending vfrom endto end thereof as shown in Fig. 8. One end of the tube is flared as at e whereby the mouth ot the slot d is enlarged to provide 'for the ready entrance of the type which are moved into the tube with the edges of the slot engaging the notches b whereby the type will be suspended with the tace end projecting outside of the tube and with the foot disposed inside of the tube, as shown in Fig. 11.
The opposite end of the slot is closed by bendingthe edges downward and inward, as shown in Fig. 8 and whereby the type cannot be removed from the tube through that end of the tube. When the tube has received the desired number of type, which will be somewhat less than is required to fill it, a spring clip f is placed in position over the Nenas COMPANY, or JERSEY'CITY, Naw
tube, as shown in Figs. 8, 9 and 1l whereby y the type are securely positioned between the closed end of the slot and the clip.
The apparatus of the present invention is for the purpose of onting the type afterthey have been delivered from the casting machine. 'V
The apparatus comprises a pair of opposed frame members l and la, provided with feet 2 by means of which the device may be secured in position, and secured in opposed relation by ,means of stay bars 3, 4 and 5. A shaft 6 is journaled in the members 1 and la and projects beyond the former, for the ,purpose to be hereinafter described.
Diametrically opposite the stay bar 3 is a guide rod 7 which extends between the trame members l and l and is secured thereto.
Secured to the shaft 6 in proximity to the frame member l is a disc 8 provided. with a circular series of semi-circular notches 9 axially arranged on the periphery thereof. Radially arranged relatively to the notches 9 is a series of spring pressed rods l0 extendingv through the disc 8, and carried on the outer end of each rod 10 is a block 11 which extendsV radially outward in alinement with a notch 9. Carried the block and extending into the notch 1s a conical pointed pin v12. A guide pin 13 carried by the block extends through a perforation in the disc 8 as shown in Fig. 7. The disc'8 is positioned at a distance inside of the frame member 1 whereby there will be a considerable space between the said member and the blocks l1.
Rigidly secured to the shaft 6 in proximity to the frame member 1a is a disc 14 having a series of notches 15 in its periphery. The notches 15 correspond in numberand position with the notches 9. Resting in each notch 15 is a saddle block 16 having a working fit in the notch. Each saddle block is provided on its outer face, which is normally flush with the periphery of the disc 14, with a semi-cylindrical groove 17 extending longitudinally across the same. A spring 19 seated in a radial opening in the disc 14 tends to move the saddle block radially outward. A screw 18 carried in the inner face of the disc 14 has its head bearing against the inner end of the block 16. One side of the head of the screw is removed whereby the blocks may be positioned in the disc.
Secured to the disc 14, and between the same and the frame member l is an annulus 2O the outside diameter of which is somewhat greater than that ofthe disc 14. The annulus 20 is provided with a series (corresponding in number and position to the notches 9 and 15) of perforations 21 which taper-,slightly from the inner to the outery side of the annulus. The perforations 21 are arranged a short distance within the'periphery of the annulus, and an axial slot 22 is formed in the periphery in radial alinement with the center of each perforation. Bctween each pair of slots 22 a lip 23 projects axially inwardly. Each lip projects over an edge of two Saddle blocks, the spacesbetween the lips forming slots one over the center of each saddle groove 17. The sides j of the lips are inclined whereby the slots are gradually widened toward the ends of the lips. The under side of each lip adjacent to the edge thereof is rounded with a lradius corresponding to that of the saddle groove 17, as shown in E ig. 5. The periphery of the ring 2O as a whole including the lips 23, is tapered slightly from the outside next to the frame member 1a, inwardly, as
`shown in Fig. 4 for a purpose to be hereinafter described.
The frame member 1l is provided with a gate, preferably near the top thereof. Said gate comprises a perforation 24 similar to 21 but tapered in the opposite direction. A slot 25 similar to the slots 22 is formed in the gate, and a `lip 26 similar to the lips 23 is positionel at each side of the gateway. A saddle block 27 similar in all respects to the saddle blocks 16 is positioned in alinement with the perforation 24. The side of the annulus 20 is in close proximity to the inner side of the frame member 1a, and the inner side of the block, in which the gate is formed, to one sideof the slot 25 is inclined at 28 as shown in Figs. 3 and 4.
Extending outward vfrom the frame member 1a and parallel to the axis of the perforation 24 isa guide rod 29, and sliding on the offset from the frames 1 and 1al respectivelyA as shown, and a hub 36 provided with a sevJ screw 27 is slidably mounted on the rod. A gauge ring 38 is rigidly secured to the hub 36, and the ring, ata point diametrically opposite the rod 3, is provided with a perforation through which the guide rod 7 passes with a loose fit.
Pivoted to the ear 35 is a weighted stoplever 39 having a projecting foot 40. The stop lever is pivoted to the ear above the rod 3 and the foot normally rests against the side of the rod 3 and in the path of the hub 36. lThe foot 40 is of sucha length that the hub will contact with it at a considerable dis tance from the ear whereby when the lever is swung away from the rod rby means of its handle the hub may have additional move- .ment to the left in F ig. 1 whereby the gauge ring will clear the disc 8. j
Rigidly secured to the shaft 6 outside of the frame 1 is an index wheel 41 having spaced notches 42 in its periphery. The notches correspond in number to the notches 9 and 15, and the perforations 21. A hand wheel 43 is rigidly secured to the shaft 6 outside of the index wheel 41 whereby the index wheel and discs 8 and 14 may be manually operated when desired.
Pivoted on the shaft 6 between the index wheel and the frame is an operating lever 44 carrying a handle 45 at one end and attached by means of a spring 46 to the frame 1 at its opposite end.
Pivoted to the lever 44 near the handle end thereof is a spring pressed pawl 47 having a tooth 48 for engagement with the notches in the index wheel. The tooth 48 has its sides formed to accurately engage the sides of the notches 42.

The operation of the apparatus is as tollows:

lllhen the type are ted outr 'lhe handle 45 is now depressed bringing the pawl down to engage the next notch in the index wheel. This movement will release the spring block 53 'from behind the dog, but the latter will be retained in engagement with the notch of the index wheel by means of the spring 50, and will preventlocked position, the indexing will be accurate whether the notches l2 are equally spaced or not. The handle is now released andthe spring 46 will raise the pawl and rotate the index wheelv in the anti clockwise direction as viewed from the operating end. ot the apparatus as shown in Fig. 6.
The rotation of the index wheel under vthe influence oit the spring 46 will `disengage the dog from the wheel and move it back against the tension ot the spring 50. As the handle end of the lever 44e ascends the top of the trigger block 53 will engage beneath the leg 5l of the dog. The continued upward movement of the lever will cause the block to be depressed against its spring, and when the tooth of the dog is opposite a notch in the index wheel the spring 50 will throw the dog into the notch. Nhen the dog starts on its inward movement the point of its tooth is not in position to engage the bottom of the notch as the latter is ashort distance back ot its ultimate position. The point ot the tooth will enter the notch, engage the upper wall of the notch and the continued upward movement of the handle will continue to depress the trigger 53 until the trigger slips from beneath the leg 5l, when the inclined face of the trigger will engage the inclined end of the toe 52, and the furtherV upward movement of the handle will force the tooth of the dog into the notch. The dog will be positively locked between the wheel and the trigger block, the handle will be locked against further upward movement.
The rotary movement impartedl to the index wheel by the dog will carry the wheel further than the movement given to it by the pawl. It will thus be seen that while the greater part of the movement ot the index wheel is imparted by the pawl, the final movement, and the locking oi" the wheel, are by means of the dog, and when the latter is in position in the notch, the wheel is positively locked against movement in either direction. By this means all tendency of the wheel to overthrow, or backlash is obviated.
When the revolving carriage is in the position just above described, the second of the receiving tubes is in position in alinement with the loading tube, and the rst receiving tube containing five type has to be moved one step beyond said `point of alinement to the position 1/ Fig. 3, and the last typey inserted therein as bearing against the straight portion of the inner -face oi the trame lEl having passed the inclined portion 28. The gauge ring 38 is now moved up to engage the lirst type inserted in the tube and is secured in such position by means of the set screw 37.
The operation above described is now repeated until each of the receiving tubes has received live type, except that the operator is not obliged to count the type, but needsimply push against the outermost type in the loading tube until the' row of type can be moved no further. `When the row cannot be y moved further to the lett. the handle is depressed and the carriage will be revolved stepbystep, until all of the tubes in the carriage has received live type. f
The gauge ring is now released from the rod 3 and moved back away from the type. The feeding tube carrying the As is removed by reversing the operation of placing it in position, anda tube containing Bs is substituted, and tour type are counted out and moved into the lirst receiving tube as before. lVhen the tube containing nine type has been moved to the position 1/ the gauge ring is moved up and securedin position as previously described.
When a considerable number of type are in the receiving tubes there is some elasticity or slack in the rows, and the inclined face 28 is provided to take care of this contin-` gency. The type cannot be moved into absolute contact by hand, and the incline 23, as shown in Fig. 3 will provide considerable leeway, and prevent the type from being injured as the carriage moves relatively to the trame la. As the carriage moves from the delivery position to the position g/ Fig. 3, the type are crowded into intimate contact, and the corners of the bodies will not be in- Ajured as would be the case if the incline 2S werel not employed.
Then the gauge ring 38 has been moved back until the hub 3G engages the toot ot the lever 35, as shown at z' Fig. l, the tubes in the carriages will have received as many type as each is designed to hold, and the last type will be lush with the right hand edge of the annulus 20 and bearing against the inner face of the frame member l, it being understood that the annulus is in close contact with the inner side ot the member la.
The lever 39 is now moved until the lfoot Ll0 is raised from the path ot the hub 36, the screw 37 is loosened and the hub. is moved back until it engages the ear 35, as shown in broken lines at y' Fig. l. The ring 38 is now clear of the closed ends of the tubes, and the inner ends of the tubes are free of type.

i stood that distance between the position e' of the ring 38 and the closed end of the tube u is greater than the width of the annulus 20 whereby the type will be moved to the leit beyond the open end oic'the tube before the type first inserted therein reaches the closed end of the tube. The tube may then be moved back against its bloeit ll to move the latter against the tension of its spring. T his will free the open end of the tubel from beneath the lips 22, and the spring .i9 will move the tube radially outward. The open end of the tube may now be raised and the partly closed end may be freed from the pin-12 and the notch 9 and a clip j placed over the open end of the tube and slid into engagement with the last type inserted. The type are thus secured in the tube and the latter is now ready to be assembled with others into complete fonts.
During the removal of the tubes from the carriage the dog i9 will be unlocked by disengagement ot the trigger 53 there-trom, and the dog and pawl L7 may be lifted from engagement with the index wheel 41 by the cam 54. The carriage may now be rotated by means of the hand wheel a3 to bring the tubes within convenient reach of the oper? ator.
t is to be understood that the indexing dcvice is capable of uses other than in conne-ction with fonting apparatus without substantial change in the device. l
1n accordance with the provisions of the patent statutes, the invention has been described in connection with what is now considered to be the best embodiment thereof, but it is to be understood that the apparatus illustrated lis merely illustrative, and that the invention may be carried out in other ways.

An apparatus of the character described, comprising a delivery element adapted to carry a plurality` of bodies, a plurality of receiving elements in circular series, means for'moving the receiving elements step-by-step to bring them successively, into axial alinement with the delivery element, means for locking the receiving elements in position, means whereby bodies may be moved from the delivery element to the receivingvelement in alinement there` with, and a movable, annular gauge common to all of the receiving elements whereby the same number of bodies may be delivered to each receiving element.v

An apparatus of the character described, comprising a delivery element adapted to carry a plurality of bodies, a plurality of receiving elements in circular series, means for moving the receiving elements step-by-step to bring them successively into axial alinement with the delivery element, means for locking the receiving elements in position, means whereby bodies may be moved from the delivery element to the receiving element in alinement therewith, and a gauge surrounding the series of ie` ceiving elements whereby the same number of bodies may be delivered to each receiving element.

An apparatus of the character described, comprising a delivery element adapted to carry a plurality of bodies, a plurality of receiving elements in circular series, means for moving the receiving ele` ments step-by-step to` bring them successively into axial alinement with the delivery element, means for locking the receiving elements in position, means whereby bodies may be moved from the delivery element to the receiving element in alinement there` with, and a. movable annular gauge suil` rounding the series of receiving elements whereby the same number of bodies may be delivered to each receiving element.
10. An apparatus of the character described, comprising of delivery element adapted to carry a plurality of bodies, a plurality of receiving elements in circular series, means for moving the receiving` ele ments step-by-step to bring them successively into axial alinement with the delivery element, means for locking the receiving ele ments in position, means whereby bodies may be moved from the delivery element to the receiving element in alinement therewith, an annular gauge surrounding the circular series of receiving elements, the said elements being free of the gauge, said gauge being in lposition to be engaged by the first body placed in each of such elements, means for adjusting the gauge longitudinally of the said elements, and means `for locking the gauge in position.

An apparatus of the character described, comprising a delivery element adapted to carry a plurality of bodies, a plurality of receiving elements in circular series, means for moving the receiving elemens step-by-step to bring them successively into axial alinement with the delivery element, means for locking the receiving ele` ments in position, means whereby bodies mav' be moved from the delivery element to the receiving element in alinement therewith, an annular gauge surrounding the circular series of receiving elements, thesaid elementsl being free ofthe gauge, said gauge being in position to'be in engaged by the first body placed in each of such elements, av guide for preventing rotation of the gauge, means for adjusting the gauge longitudinally of the said elements, means for locking the gauge in position, and a stop for arresting the move` ment of the gauge short of the length of the receiving elements, and means for moving the stop whereby the gauge may be moved free of the elements.

An apparatus of the character described, comprising a shaft, opposed frames for supporting the shaft, discs secured to and spaced apart on the shaft, a series of spaced body receiving elements carriedy on the peripheries ofitlie discs, there being an opening in alinement with each element through one disc, there being an opening through one frame meinberthe same radial distance from the shaft as the receiving element openings, a delivery element adapted to carry bodies, said element being secured in alinement with the last mentioned opening,
means for automatically giving the discs a step-bystep movement to bring the receiving elements successively into alinement with the delivery element, means for transferring bodies from the delivery element to the receiving element in alinement therewith. a gauge ca-rried by the frame and movable longitudially thereof to limit the number of bodies transferred from one element to the other, and means for moving the elements longitudinally of the apparatus to discngage the elements therefrom.

An apparatus of the character described, comprising a shaft, opposed vframes YFor supporting the shaft, discs secured to and spaced apart on the shaft, a. series of spaced body receiving elements carried on the i'ieriplieries of the discs, there being an opening in alinement with each element through one disc, there being an opening through one frame member the same radial distance from the shaft as the receiving elenient openings, a delivery element adapted to carry bodies and secured in alinement with the last mentioned opening, means for automatically giving the discs a step-bystep movement to bring the receiving elements successively into alinement with the delivery element, automatic means for locking the discs in position, means for trans* ferring bodies from the delivery element to the receiving element in alinement there with, means for unlocking the discs, a gauge carried by the frame and movable longitudinally thereof to limit the number of bodies transferred from one element to the other, and means for moving the elements longitudinally of the apparatus to disengagc the elements therefrom.
14. An apparatus of the character described, comprising a rotary device having end walls and carrying a series of body ref ceiving tubes, a frame for supporting such;
device, one end of the rotary device being in close proximity to one frame member, a delivery tube adapted to carry a plurality of bodies carried by the said frame nlember, there being means of communication through the frame member and device from the delivery tube to a receiving tube, means -for rotating` the device step-by-step to bring the receiving tubes succ-essi\.'cly into l alincment with the deliv ry tube whcrel'y bodies may be transferred from the latter to the former through the frame member and a wall of the device, the wall of the frame member at the point of transfer of the bodies from said member to the wall of the device being inclined in the direction of travel of the device wherebyv the bodies will be crowded into the elementJ by the rotation thereof, and a gauge against which the bodies will be moved by thevinclined portion.

A n apparatus of lthe character lescribedn comprising a rotary device having end wallsl and carrying a series ofy body receivingtubes, a frame for supporting' such device, one end of the rotary device being in close proximity to one ,frame member, a delivery tube adapted to carry a plurality of bodies carried by the said frame member, there being means of communication through the frame member and device from the delivery tube to a receiving tube, means for rotating the device step-by-step to bring the receiving' tubes successively in axial alinement with the delivery tube whereby bodies may be transferred from the latter to the former through the frame member and a wall of the device, the wall of the frame member at the point of transfer' of the bodies from said member to thev'all of the device being inclined in the direction of travel of the device whereby the bodies will be crowded into the element by the rotation thereof, and an adjustable gauge against which the bodies will be moved by the inclined portion. y
lo, An apparatus of the character described, comprising a frame having end members, a rotary device -comprising` discs carried on a shaft and spaced apart, a lcircular series of. receiving tubes carried in notches in the peribherics of the discs, one of said discs worllinp' in proximity to the inside of one of the frame members, there being` a slot extending longitudinally of nach tube and 'facing outward. tliercbeiiw' an'opening in the disc communicating with each tube. there being an opening in the frame member Vin alinement with a disc opening, a delivery tube lcarried in'the frame opening` there being a longitudinal slot in said delivery tube, said tube carrying a plurality of bodies having oppositely disposed notches therein, the edges vof the slot engaging the nmtches'` to support the body, said body being otherwise unsupported, the said frame member and disc being slotted in radial alincnicnt with the tubes carried thereby, there being a lip extending axially of the disc betweeneach pair of tubes carried thereby, there being a space between the lips, said space being in alinement with the tube slots and the disc slots, spring pressed means engaging the tubes with the under sides of the lips, similar lips engaging the delivery tube, and spring pressed means engaging said tube with the lips, the lips, frame and disc being raised above the sides of the tubes, the outer surfaces of the lips being inclined away from the said disc and frame member. y

An apparatus of the character described, comprising frame members spaced apart, a shaft journalled in the members, a pair of discs carried by the shaft and spaced apart, there being a series of peripheral notches in one disc, a series of blocks each held against one side of said disc by spring pressure, each block` closing an end of a notch, a pin projecting from. each block into a notch, al similar number of peripheral notchesin the other disc, a saddle block in each ofv said latter notches, there being a semiecylindrical groove in each saddle block, a spring tending yto force each saddle block radially outward, a member carried by said disc and having a rim projecting over the saddle blocks, there being an opening in the member in alinement with the groove of each saddle block, there being a slot in themember communicating with each opening, said slots extending through the rim, a series of longitudinally vslotted tubes carried in alined notches, one end of each tube being engaged by a pin on a block of the first mentioned disc, the opposite end of each tube resting iu the groove of a saddle block and being forced against the rim of the second mentioned disc by means of the saddle block spring, the slot of'each tube being in alineinent with a slot inthe said disc, and an ,alining disc carried by the shaft between the aforementioned discs and engaging the inner sides of the tubes.

An indexing device comprising a member adapted' to be rotated step-by-step, a disocarried by the member, there being a series of notches in the periphery of the dise, a pivoted lever, a pawl carried by the lever and adapted to engage a notch in the disc, a spring moving the lever torotate the disc by engagement of the pawl therewith, and a stop for locking the :disc against movement.

An indexing device comprising a frame, a member adapted to be rotated stepby-step, a disc carried by the member, there being a series of notches in the periphery of the disc, a pivoted lever', a pawl carried by the lever and adapted to engage ya notch in the disc, a spring for -moving the lever to rotate the disc by engagement of the pawl, therewith, and a stop adapted to be engaged by an element on the lever for locking the disc against movement. y

An indexing device comprising a frame, a member adapted to be rotated stepn by-stcp, a disc carried by the member, there being a series ol notches in the periphery ot the disc, a pivoted lever, a pawl carried by the lever and adapted to engage a notch in the disc, a spring for moving` the lever to rotate the disc by engagement oi the pawl therewith and a stop adapted to be engaged by a spring actuated trigger carried by the lever for locking the disc against movement. 21. An indexing device comprising a "frame, a member mounted in the Jr'rame and adapted to be given a rotary, step-by-step movement, a disc having spaced notches in its periphery, a lever pivoted on the axis ot the member, a Ipawl carried by the lever and adapted to engage a notch, an element carried by the frame and adapted to engage a notch, means for causing the element to engage the periphery of the disc, and means carried by the lever For engaging the elementV with a notch to rotatethe disc.

An indexing device comprising a trame, a member mounted in the frame and adapted to be given a rotary, step-by-step movement, a disc having spaced notches in its periphery, a lever pivoted on the axis of the member, a pawlV carried by the lever and adapted to engage a notch, an element having a tooth adapted to engage a notch, a spring for causing` the element to engage the periphery ot the disc, and spring actuated means carried by the lever for engaging the tooth of the element with a notch to rotate the disc and to lock the element between the disc and lever. v

An indexing device comprising a frame, a member mounted, in ther :trame vand adapted to be given a rotary, step-by-stepmovement, a disc having spaced angular` notches in its periphery, a lever pivoted on the axis ot the member, a pawl carried by the lever and adapted to engage a notch, an element pivoted to the frame, a spring Jfor causing the element to engage the periphery ot' the disc, spring actuated means carried by the lever for engaging the toot-h of the element with a notch to rotate the disc, and to lock the element between the disc and lever, and means for locking the element out of engagement wit-h the disc.

An indexing device comprising a, frame, a member mounted in the frame and adapted to be given a rotary step-by-step movement, a disc having spaced angular notches in its periphery, a lever pivoted on the axis of the member, a pawl carried by the lever and adapted to engage anotch, a spring for moving the lever to rotate the disc by ra pawl pivoted on the lever, a spring for enthe engagement of the pawl with a notch, an element pivoted to the frame, said element having an angular tooth adapted to engage a notch, a spring for causing the element to engage the periphery of the disc, spring actuated means carried by t-he lever for engaging the tooth with a notch to rotate the disc, and to lock the element between the disc and lever, means 'for locking the element out of engagement with the disc, and means carried by the element Yfor disengaging the pawl from the disc.

An indexing device, comprising al member to be rotated step-by-step, there being a series of spaced notches in the member, 80 a lever pivoted relatively to the member, a pawl pivoted on the lever and adapted to engage the member whereby the latter will be rotated by a pivotal movement ot the lever, a dog movable relatively to the member and the lever, said dog having a tooth adapted to accurately tit into a notch in the member, and means carried by the lever for engaging the tooth with a notch to further rotate the member.
26. An indexing device, comprising a member to be rotated step-by-step, a disc carried by the member, there being a 'series of spaced angular knotches in the periphery of the disc, a lever pivoted on the member, a pawl pivoted on the lever', a spring for engaging the pawl with the periphery of the disc: whereby the latter will be rotated by a I pivot-al movement of the lever, a dog movr able relatively to the disc and the lever, said i100 dog having a tooth adapted to4 accurately lit into a notch in the disc, means carried by the lever for engaging the tooth with a notch to further rotate the disc and to lock the dise against movement in either direction.
27. A indexing device, comp-rising a member to be rotated step-by-step, a disc carried by the member, there being a series of spaced angular notches in the periphery oit the disc, a lever pivoted on the member,
gaging the pawl with the periphery of the disc whereby the latter will be rotated by a pivotal movement of the lever, a dog' movable relatively to the disc and the lever, said dog having a tooth adapted to accurately t vinto a notch in the disc, means carried by the lever for engaging the tooth with a notch to further rotate the dise and to lock the disc against movement in either direction, and means for locking the dog outl of the path of movement of the disc. t
