To all to hom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JUL-ins T. THURSTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Stockton, in the county of San Joaquin, State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Picker Buffers for Looms; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this application.

This invention relates to improvements in loom construction, the principal object being to provide an improved. form of buffer for the pickers of the looms, so that the shock of impact of the shuttle will. be absorbed, and the picker will be prevented from striking the rigid end of the loomframe 1.

This device therefore not only prolongs the life of the pickers considerably,'but in itself will give service over a much greater period than is had with the present form of buffer.

These pickers with present equipment, last but a very short time, and are a constant source of expense, both in the tying up of the looms while replacing them, and in themselves, while the form of buffer at present used is a leather strip, only two of which can be obtained from a single hide, and be sides being as a consequence somewhat expensive, are constantly breaking, necessitating replacement, and besides does not adequately prevent the picker from striking against the loom-frame.

The use of my improved device eliminates this leather buffer and its attendant defects, and as stated, prolongs the life of the pickers considerably.

A further object of the invention is to produce a simple and inexpensive device and yet one which will be exceedingly effective for the purposes which it is designed.

These objects I accomplish by means of such structure and relative arrangement of parts as will fully appear by a perusal of the following specification and claim.

In the drawings similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views.

Fig. 1 is a top plan view of portion of a loom, showing my improved buffer struction.

fig. 2 is a fragmentary side view of a picker guide-spindle and a leather buckle or loop thereon.

Referring now more particularly to the characters of reference on the drawings, the numeral 1 denotes the lay or frame of the loom at each end of which are rigid bars 2 pro eoting therebeyond, while intermediate these bars are rigid plates 3 projecting in the same direction, between which are the reeds 4.

Extending between the corresponding bars and plates and fixed thereto are the picker guide-spindles 5 on which slide the pickers 6, the parts just described being a construction common to looms.

In the operation of the loom, the shuttle is kicked back and forth the length of the lay by movement imparted to the pickers, which have freedom of movement the length of the spindles.

Slidable on each spindle 5 and positioned adjacent the bar 2 is a leather loop or strap 1'' which extends somewhat to one side of the spindle and forms there a loop forthe hook 8 on a link 9 which has a hook and eye connection with a rod 10 parallel to and adjacent the lay, and extending through a leather loop or guide 11 thereon, the eye 10 of the rod 10 not being able to pass through the loop, and the latter being positioned near that end so that the rod may have only limited movement.

The other end of the rod 10 is flexibly connected to a link 12 which extends to a bar 13 pivotally mounted on the lay, a tension spring 14 being attached to the bar 13 below its pivotal connection by means ofan adjustable yoke 15 thereon and to an eye 16 mounted on the lay adjacent the member 11, so that the pull of said spring constantly tends to draw the rod 9 and strap '7 along the rod 5 and away from the bar 2, such movement, as stated, being limited by the position of the loop 11 relative to the rodeye 10 By adjustment of the yoke 15 on the bar 13, the amount of movement of the spring, and hence the strength thereof brought into play, can be regulated.

Each picker is provided with the structure just described, each one being independent from the other.

The operation of the device is self-evident, since it is seen that as soon as the picker, impelled by the returning shuttle, strikes against the strap 7, the spring let is brought into play, causing the picker to stop before it can strike the bar 2, and absorbing all Having thus described my invention, what I'claim as new and useful and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

A picker-buffer for looms comprising a leather strap slidable'on the picker guidespindle and extending to one side thereof, a rigid link hooked to the outer end of the strap, a rod having hook-and-eye connection with the link, a leather guide for the rod adjacent its connection with the'link and smaller than said hook-and-eye connection, whereby the movement of the rod and link in one direction is limited, and a spring structure connected to the rod at the end thereof opposite the guide and arranged to normally hold the connection of the rod and link against the guide.
