Be it known that I Enwrn citizen of the United States residing at Dayton, in the county of I Iontgomery and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Control Means for Graphophones, of which the following is a specification.
The most common form of stopping and starting means used upon the sound producing machines today is the ordinary brake device manually controlled for the application of the brake and for the releasing thereof. In my pending application for patcnt filed July 15, 1919, Serial Number 310,910 I propose the employment of brake means for controlling the movement of the record carrier or turn table, the controlling of which brake means is made a part of the function of the traveling tone arm which supports the reproducer, means being employed intermediate the tone arm and brake means so that the tone arm may be operated not only for rendering the stopping means active but for adjusting the same for inaction.
My present invention embodies improvements in the above mentioned construction of control means for the stopping and start in device of a graphophone.

n the first instance, I have improvedupon the trip part carried by the tone arm or traveling part so that a positive interlocking of said trip with the brake detent ma be obtained irrespective of the direction of movement imparted to the tone arm. By this feature I am enabled to obtain more easily and with possibly greater accuracy the proper adjustment of the trip necessary preliminarily to predetermine the stoppage point in the reproduction of the record.
In addition to the foregoing my invention resides in a general simplification oi the construction of the brake controlling parts, and the provision of a number of alternative forms adapted for use'under practical conditions of service and with different types of machines.

motor frame and the parts forming the invention provided intermediate the tone arm and governor shaft.

Figures 4 and 5 are sectional views taken about at right angles to each other illustrat in a modification of the improvements.

The parts of my invention are so simple in their construction and arrangement that they will be readily understood upon reference to the following description in connection with the drawings embodying the fig ures above outlined. .In these drawings the base of the graphophone is designated A and'the record carrier or turn-table B. C is the record on the turn-table. D the spindle with which the carrier B rotates when the machine is in operatiom and E is the motor frame which is of any conventional type. There is utilized in connection with the motor of the machine, not illustrated, the gov ornor shaft 1 and its customary disk 2. The stopping and starting of the motor is effooted according to the construction in Figures 1 to 3 inclusive by a brake lever 3 pivotallv supported at 4 upon a depending bracket 5 attached to the motor frame by a suitablefastening 6. The lever 3 is equipped with a suitable brake shoe 7. A
spring 8 normally tends to hold the lever 3 with the brake or shoe 7 applied to the disk 2, this being the stopping position.
The means ofmy invention in addition to the advantageous attachable form of the brake parts just describedincludes a detent 9 vertically movable on the base A and preferably passing through an opening 10 in said base. The detent 9 is in the simple form of a vertically movable plate and is supported in a tubular guide or member 11 attached to the base A. At its lower end, the detent 9 is forked at 12 to receive and enlength of and 16 are opposite gage the free end of the brake lever 3 for operative connection with the latter. Offstanding from the upper end of the detent 9 and preferably integral therewith is an arm 13 and ity of the detent 9 is a vertical projection or stop 14 and a notch 15.
Mounted upon the traveling part or tone arm F, provide an adjustable trip 16 consisting primarily of a ring like portion frictionally engaging and encircling the tone arm adjacent to the point of support of the latter on the base A, and an offstanding arm disposed so as to extend over the detent 9 and its arm 13. Furthermore, the trip 16 is disposed so that it may be received by the notch 15 of the detent 9 when the parts 15 one another at which time the spring 8 will raise the lever 3 and the detent 9 and cause the parts 15 and 16 to interlock.
With an understanding of the construction as above presented, it will be obvious that while the parts 9 and 16 are interlocked, as shown in Figures 1 and 2, the operator may slightly elevate the tone arm F and by movement of the same in either direction, the relation of the parts 9 and 16 remaining fixed during such movement, the reproducer stylus may be carried to any point in the the record, usually its inner terminal, in order to set the mechanism for stopping automatically at such place. Thereafter the operator will raise the tone arm or traveling part F sufiiciently to carry the trip 16 out of the notch 15, then swing'the arm F toward the point of the record at which it is desired to start reproduction,-
usually the beginning of the record. In this swinging movement, the arm- F may be caused to engage the upper edge of the arm 13 to depress the detent 9 sufficiently to cause release of the brake through downward movement of the lever 3. The deposit of the stylus of the reproducer 17 upon the record makes necessary downward pressure of the trip 16 on the arm 13 suiiicient to maintain the brake lever 3 and its brake shoe 7 in released positions until the trip 16 travels over the arm 13 back to a point opposite the notch 15. At this time the spring 8 will lift the detent 9 and shoe 7 for application of the brake to the governor disk 2 and stoppage of the machine. On account of the frictional action between the parts F and 16 variation in adjustment of the trip 16 is obtainable so that irrespective of the size of the record the manipulation of the trip by the arm F may be obtained under any conditions so as vto predetermine the point of stoppage of reproduction in the length of the reproducing zone on the record C. The sole requirement of the operation of my invention is that the tone arm F be manipulated to predetermine the stopping point of reproduction practically at the upper extrem-- that the brake lever 3" and then shifted to the starting point and deposited so that the stylus is upon the record, the latter action insuring the automatic starting of the machine if that has not already been performed by the downward pressure of the part 16 on the arm 13. The above operation is practically about all that is required of the operator at the present time in the use of the ordinary graphophone as regards the movement 0 the tone arm alone.
It is, of course, clear that the parts 9 and 11 may be of any suitable form in cross section such as round, square, or otherwise than oblong as illustrated.
The modification of Figures 4; and 5 is of self evident construction working practically on the identical principle above disclosed excepting that the detent 9 is pivoted instead of slidable and mounted upon a pivotal support or bracket 11. The parts 3, 11, 13, 15', 14; and 12 are equivalent in function to the parts 3, 11, 13, 15, 14 and 12 previously set fort The brake lever 3, as seen in Figure 5, is pivoted intermediate its ends, however. The parts otherwise are practically as above set forth in respect to igures 1 to 3 inclusive and have the same reference characters.
'As per Figures 6 and 7 the construction proposed by me is practically the same as disclosed at the out start hereof excepting has its brake shoe 7 arranged to engage the turn table B instead of the governor disk as shown in Figures "1 to 5 inclusive. 1 have designated the parts in Figures 6 and 7, equivalent to the parts 3, 8, 9, 13, 14, 15, 16, 11 and 12, as 3", 8", 9", 13", 1 1", 15", 16", 11" and 12 respectively.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new is 1. In graphophone mechanism, the combination with a record carrier, a reproducer arm having a reproducer to traverse a record upon said carrier, of a stopping device for the carrier, a trip on the arm, and a controlling detent connected with the stopping device, the last two parts being adapted to interlock for adjusting the trip relatively to the arm to predetermine the time when the stopping means shall become effective, and to cooperate to move the detent for retracting the stopping means to permit starting of the carrier for reproduction.
2.. Means as claimed in claim 1 in which the trip is arranged'to press and retract the stopping device to permit operation of the carrier when the reproducer arm is in a position for the reproduction of the record.

In graphophone mechanism, in combination, a record carrier and the traveling reproducer arm associated therewith, together with a trip adjustable on the arm, brake means for stopping the carrier, and detent means intermediate the trip and brake means for cooperation with the trip for holding the brake means retracted during operation of the carrier for reproduction and adapted to interlock with the trip to hold the latter relatively stationary during movement of the reproducer arm under certain conditions. the said trip being movable with the reproducer arm under other conditions of relative adjustment of the trip and detent to release the trip from its interlock ing engagement with said detent.
5. In graphophone mechanism, in combination, a record carrier and the traveling reproducer arm associated therewith, to gether with a trip adjustable on the arm, brake means for stopping the carrier, and detent means intermediate the trip and brake means for cooperation with the trip for retracting the brake means and holding the latter retracted during operation of the carrier for reproduction and adapted to in terlock with the trip to hold the latter relatively stationary during movement of the reproducer arm under certain conditions, the said trip being movable with the reproducer arm under other conditions of relatively adjustment of the trip and detent to release the trip from its interlocking engagement with said detent.
6. In graphophone mechanism, in com bination a record carrier and the traveling reproducer arm associated therewith, to gether with a trip adjustable on the arm, brake means for stopping the carrier, and detent means intermediate the trip and brake means for cooperation with the trip for retracting the brake means and adapted to interlock with the trip to hold the latter relatively stationary during movement of the reproducer arm under certain conditions, the said trip being movable with the reproducer arm under other conditions of relative adjustment of the trip and detent, the said detent being equipped with a member against which the trip bears during the re producing operation of the reproducer arm so as to maintain the detent in a position holding the brake means inactive.

In combination, graphophone mechanism including a record carrier and traveling reproducer arm, brake means for the carrier, a detent to actuate the brake means comprising an elongated member arranged for longitudinal movement only and in a direction parallel with the axis of movement of the reproducer arm, and an adjustable trip on the reproducer arm to actuate said member.

In combination, graphophone mech anism including a record carrier and traveling reproducer arm, brake means for the carrier, a trip on the reproducer arm adjustable thereon to predetermine the time when the brake means shall become effective, and a detent to actuate the brake means nected therefrom comprising a vertically sliding member disposed adjacent to the re producer arm and having an ofistanding arm against which the trip is adapted to bear to disconhold the brake means retracted during reproducing action of the reproducer arm.

In combination graphophone mechanism including a record carrier and traveling reproducing arm, brake means for the carrier, an adjustable trip on the reproducing arm, and a detent to actuate the brake means comprising a slid'able member having a portion disposed so as to interlock With the trip to hold the latter stationary during certain movement of the reproducing arm, and another portion adapted to be engaged by the trip so as to maintain the detent in a position holding the brake means inoperative.
