rnr'r'nsoir ATTACHMENT.
To @ZZ whom t may concern: 1 y Be it known that I, PETER J. NoLAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Chester, county of Delaware, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful lmproved Transom Attachment, of which the following isfv a specification.
e This invention generally stated relates to a transom attachment and has more especial relation to a device for opening and closing a transom. f TheV leading objects of the present in;-` vention are to provide a compact, durable, eficient, and comparatively inexpensive attachment of the character stated which may be readily operated with one hand, is `quickacting and by which a transom may be adjusted to .any desired open position. Other and further objects relate to the provision of general arrangements and combinations of parts for attaining the results sought by ysaid leading objects.
`The invention consists of the improve# ments hereinafter described and finally claimed. A 1
The nature, characteristic features, and scope of the invention willbe more fully understood from the following description taken in connectionwith the accompanying drawings forming which:
Fig. 1, is a fragmentary view in elevation illustrating an attachment embodying features of the invention as applied to a transom.
Fig. 2, is a similar view in side elevation Fig. A, is a view of the attachment in front elevation, and y Fig.l e, is a fragmentary view of almodified form of operating means. y
For the purpose of illustrating my invenpart thereof, and in tion, I have shown 'in the accompanying.
drawings, two forms thereof which are at present preferred byme,'since the same have been found in practicel to give satisfactory and reliable results, althoughit isto be understood that the variousinstrumentalities of which my inventionconsists can be variously aranged and organized and that my invention is not limited to the precise arrangement and organization of the instrumentalities as herein shown and` described.
In the drawings numeral 10 designates a door-frame and numeral 11 a transom Specification of Letters Patent.v4
manner as shown at425 in Fig. 3.

operation with said screw, the lowerendof said follower being grooved as :at17 for tracking upon guide rail'18 of the bracket. rThe upper end of thek follower is bifurcated 'as at19.l Having pivotalrelation with `they biftjlrcated portionzofffollower 16v andthe bifurcated portion of a member 2O which `is fixed, as; by screws, to `the'frame vofthe tranf som, is a link 21; Thus as ythe follower 16 moves along the screw l5 the transom,
through said connection, isfopened or closed.y
lfixed'to screw 15 is a sprocket-wheel 22. Cooperatively engaging the sprocket-wheel,k '1s a chain 23. By pulling downward upon one end of the chain the sprocket-'wheel may be caused to rotate the screw in the properv i direction for causing the'follower, link through 21, to open or close the transom; lnv
'this connection it'niay bestated that since" the nut. ofthe follower and thescrewy are relatively interlockedthe transom .will'remain infwhate'ver position the same may be shiftedto. 'Thus proper "adjustments maybe secured. Partially surrounding the sprock-` et-wheel is a rim or vflange 24 the free ends curved of which are inwardly directed in a tionwith respect to the sprocket-wheelbut serves to bring the runs of the chain closelyA adjacent to the bracket 13, see F ig. 1. .Upon f opposite sides of the'bracket 135l adjacent to `the lower ends of flange 241 are lugs 26. The
runs of the chain pass between such lugs and the curved ends of the flange. of a chain an aperturechvertically movable rod 29, see Fig. l1, may beemployed in whichy case theflange 2e is dispensedwitjh.
In order to afford the follower free movel ment back and forth along the bracket rail said follower may if desiredbe provided with a roller 28.
door jamb the follower may be" provided r nstead yiio y terminates in an vupwardly extended arm paralleling said plate said bracket being provided with a guide-rail disposed in parallelism therewith, a screw journalled v between said arm and plate in a plane above said guidarail, a toothed wheel fixed to said screw, vertically `movable means cooperatively engaging said wheel for operating said screw, a follower cooperative with said screw said followerL being provided vwith a depending guide arm the vlower end of which is bifurcated for engaging'said guide-rail, an anti-friction roller journalled in the bifurcated portion of said guide arm for travel over said guide-rail and a link pivoted to the follower top and pivotally connected to said pivoted element, the aXis of the pivotal connection of said link with said follower being in the same vertical plane with the aXis of said anti-friction roller whereby the stress of the operating partsl yand the weight of the transom is carried by said anti-friction roller thus relieving the screw from stress and weight and rendering the operation of the vdevice-more facile. .2. In, combination a pivotal element, ka
fixed plate terminating in a bracket, a screw s bracket and said plate and in a plane above said bracket, a follower for said screw,
`means connecting said .follower and-pivotal element,` a toothed wheel fixed to said screw immediately adjacent said plate, va rim carried by said plate and partially surrounding said wheel in concentric relation the lower ends of said rim being eXtendedtoward said bracket upon a curved line, oppositely dis-L Journalled vbetween the free end of saidposed means carried by said bracket adjacent the lower ends of said rim and a chain cooperative with said wheel the runs ofwhich pass between said means and the lower endsy `of said rim.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto signed my name.
PETER J..NoLAN.`
