UNITED STATES JOSEPH J. MARX, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
I moms MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patnted May 30, 1922.
Application filed May- '9, 1921. Serial No. 467,821.
To all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that I, JosEr-H" J. MARX, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, Missouri, have invented a new and useful Ironing Machine, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to ironing machines.
The invention has special reference to machines including an ironing shoe and a roll for carrying and pressing the articles to be ironed against the ironing shoe.
An object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved roll pad for the roll.
In the drawings, in which a preferred embodiment of the invention is shown,
Fig. 1 is an end elevation of a roll having my improved roll pad thereon.
Fig. 2 is a view partly in section and partly in elevation showing part of the rollwith the pad thereon.
My invention comprises'one or more thicknesses or layers composed of felted or matted metal shavings. Steel shavings have been found. satisfactory as they possess the desirable qualities of resilience, strength and durability, and may .be rendered non-corrodible byappropriate treatment.
As shown in the drawing two layers or thicknesses of the metal shavings are wound around the roll. An appropriate means for securing the cover of shavings around the roll is shown, comprising a substantially propriate thickness of the felted metal shavings 2 is secured to form a pad or mat. One edge of the screen or cloth 1 1s secured to the roll by appropriate screws or nails 3, or otherwise. and the mat composed of the shavings and the screen is wound or rolled around the roll with the screen outside.
I have also used satisfactorily an impervious cover around the mat composed of the felted metal shavings. The impervious cover shown comprises a double layer of oil cloth 4 or other appropriate material. Preferably the coated surfaces of the 011 cloth, when such material is used, are faced together and the doubled material is wound around the metallic mat described. One edge of the cover 4 is secured to the screen 1 by appropriate fasteners 5.
A layer 6 of felt, or flannel or other approprlate material is rolled around the cover 4 and the outer layer 7 of muslin or the like enclosed the felt or flannel.
A mat thus constructed possesses numerous advantages. The metal shavings are not damaged by long use.and are much more resilient or elastic than pads composed wholly of. felt or the like. The metal shavings may beheld in position by the nonelastic screen 1 and the outer covers conlmat and provide plete the thickness of the the necessary surface portion thereof. I do not restrict myself to unessential features or limitations, but what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In an ironing machine, the combina tion with a roll for supporting and moving materials to be ironed; of a pad of uniform radlal th'ickness, comprising alayer of felted, resilient metal shavings around the roll; and means for preventing the shavings from creeping or becoming massed when the roll operates.
2. In an ironing machine, the combination with a, roll for supporting and moving materials to be ironed; of a pad of uniform radial thickness secured to the roll and comprising a layer of felted resilient metal shavings encircling the roll; a reticulated binder holding the shavings from creeping when the machine is in use; and means for holding the pad on the roll. non-elastic screen or cloth 1 to which an ap- 3. In an ironing machine, the combination with a roll for supporting and moving materials to be ironed, of a layer of felted resilient metal shavings around the roll, an impervi ous cover enclosing the shavings, and elements binding the cover in connection with the shavings.
4. In an ironing machine, .the combination of a roll for supporting and moving materials to be ironed, a layer of felted resilient metal shavings enclosing the roll. a screen holding the, shavings on the roll, an impervious'cover enclosing the screen and the shavings, means securing the cover to the screen, and an ironmg mat around the shavlngs.
