UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PAUL SIBLEY, F WGRCESTER'. LWASSACH'U'SETTS.
MULTIPOLAF, SWTGH.
10 all whom t may concern:
Be it known that l, PAUL Sinner, a citizen oi the United States, residing at lllcrcester, in the county of llVoii'cester and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Multipolar Switch, ci' which the ollowing is a specification.
The object oi this invention is to provide a new and improved multi-polar switch by which many permutations or `combinations of various circuits can easily be obtained.
The switch has been especially designed for use in connection with a transformer, al-
though the same is capable of other uses.
rlhe invention is illustrated in the accom-` rtrating the different ways the switch may be set.
The invention will be best understood by lirst giving a detail description 0f the switch, and to follow this description reference should be had to Figs. 2 and 3 oi' the drawings.
Referring to the same and in detail, A
designates the switch body or casing which is preferably made in cylindrical shape with a bottom plate C' designates a circular `rib or partition which is secured inthe body so to divide the same into an outer annular chamber D, and an inner circular chamber E. l? designates a cover which may be secured to the body by any desired means.
A shaft G is soclreted in the bottom B and has a wing G secured to which is a bottom distributer bar H made of conducting material, such as copper, the shaft G preferably being made of insulating material.
A bushing I is fitted on the shaft G, and the same is provided with a wing I, secured to whichis an upper distributer bar J preierably made of: copper, the hub I being made of insulating` material.
A knob or handle K is secured on the shaft G and a knob or handle L is secured on the bushing I, these knobs or handles being provided for setting the switch.
Specification of Letterslatcnt.` Patgnied uay 30, 1922 Application filed March 26, '1.921.
Serial No. 455,907.
three armed iframe or segment N is ci "ried by the distrilniter bar H preferably by pivoting the same thereto and bv holdthe same in position. relatively.l to the g l'l by a spring O which is arranged to be irame against a stop The trame is preferably made oit insulating material, and carries three connecting pieces N, N and N2 preferably made of copper.
10 desigi etes' the binding Vpost for the leading-in wire, .and 11` the binding post for 1 7 p Li a' leading-out wire.
Contacts 12, 18, 14 and 15 are secured to tnepartition C in position so that one end oit the distributer bar H will cooperate with the surfaces thereof next the bottom B. The contact 12 is connected to the post 10, and the contacts 12, 18,14: and 15 are connected together by a bus-bar 16 arranged on the bottom of the switch.
` Contacts 17,18, 19 and20 are also secured to the partition C so that their sur fafces next the cover F will come in a. plane to cooperate with one end of the distributer bar J. rlhe post `11 is connected to a bus-4 bar 21 and the contacts 17, 1.8, 19 and 20 are connected to said bus-bar.
Contacts 22, 28, 24- and 25 are connected posits side of the switch relatively to the contacts ilireviously described, these contants having their surfaces next the bottom B oi the switch set in a plane so that the other end oi. the distributer bar H can cooperate therewith.
.i'lnother set of contacts 26, 27 28 and 29 is also carried by this part of the partition C, the upper 'aces thereot' being set in `a plane so that the other end ot the distributer bar il can (3o-operate therewith.
The vcontact 17 is provided with a stop 170 and the contact 2O is provided with a stop 20() to limit the motion of the distributer bar J, and the contact 22 is provided with a stop 220 and the contact 25 with a stop 250 to limit the motion of the distributer bar H.
` The contacts 26 and 28 form a pair of con tacts or in other words they are arranged relatively to each oth r so that when the connecting piece N is in the position shown 1n Fig. 2 they will be electrically connected together. The contacts 28 and 25 also form a pair of contacts arranged so that when the connecting piece N2 is in the position shown in Fig. 2 they will be connected together. The contacts 2( and also will be connecte/.1. together when the connectingpiece N occupies the position at which the connecting piece N is shown in Fig. 2, and the contacts 28 and will also be conn nected together when the connecting piece N occupies the position which N 2 occupies in Fig. 2.
The contacts '12, '13, 1 4.; and l5, and 17, 1S, 19 and 20 are set at a slightly greater distance 'from the center so that the contact pieces N, N and N2 will not co-operate therewith.
The contacts 22 and 26 are connected to a circuit l; the contacts 23 and 27 to a circuit the contacts 2% and 28 to a circuit et; and the contacts 25 and 29 to a circuit 8, as illustrated in Fig. l.
in the specific application shown of my switch, circuit l includes a prilnary winding P on a transformer T; circuit 2 includes a windingl P2 on the transformer; circuit 4t includes a winding 3i on the transformer; and circuit 8 includes a winding P8 on the transformer. These windings may be arranged in the ratio in which they are above speciied; that is, relatively as l, 2, 4 and 8.
This is a convenient arrangement tor get ting a number ot permutations tor connecting` the coils in series. These permutations can be easily followed by referring to the second sheet of drawings, and by considering the distributer bar H as controlling the 1' ntlow oit the current, and the bar .l the outflow oi the current.
Thus in Fig. lcoil l is connected; in 5 coil 2 is connected; in Fig. 6 coils l and 2 are connected, the connecting piece N joining them in series; in Fig. 7 coil 4 is con* nected; in F ig. 8, coils 2 and 4 are connected, connecting` piece N connect ng these coils in series; in Fig. 9 coils l, 2 and 4 are connected, connecting pieces N and N connecting these coils in series; in Fig. l0 coil 8 is connected; in Fig. ll coils s and 8 ar connected, connecting` piece N connecting these coils in series; in Fig. l2 coils 2, 4 and i3 are connected, the connecting pieces N and N connecting these coils in series; and in Fig. A3 coils l, 2, l and 8 are connected, connecting pieces N, N and N2 connecting these coils in series.
Thus with the coils arranged in the ratio 'ncviously describech the windings of" the trai former may be connected in any one o!" me multiples Il, 2, El, 1 -f6, 7, 8, 12, ll and lf3.
This terms a desirable switch I'or changing` Vthe voltage fn'' the primary winding oit a traustormcr. lit high voltages are to be l'mndled the switch can be :filled with oil.
il: desired the secondary winding oit the trans former inabe arranged in a similar 'that may be divided into coils S, "t and tig, and these may be connected controlled by another one of my ches as will be readily understood by rej to l ot the drawings.
g two switches in this way a great iiien. voltages can be obtained. I switch may be applied for other uses.
The details and arrangements herein shown and described may be greatly varied by a sl'filled electrician without departing iii/:om the scope of my invention as expressed in the claims.
Eat/'ingr thus fully described my invention what l, claim and desire to secure by Letters-patent is l. lin electric switch having two series oi'v contacts arranged in pairs, two distributor bars cooperating therewith, and a Contact pi ce carried by one oit the distributer bars for connecting the contacts ol: each pair.
2. in electric switch consisting of a series of contacts arranged in pairs, a distributor bar ior cooperating with one set of contac'ts ot 'the pairs, another distributer-bar co-operating with the other set of contacts 't the pairs, and a plurality of connecting iieccs carried by one ot the distributor bars ,wr connecting the contacts making up the pairs.
3. in electrical switch comprising two series olf contacts arranged in different planes, a distributor bar coacting with the contacts arranged in one plane, a distributer bar lco-icting with the contacts arranged in the other plane, and a plurality of connecting pieces carried by one. of the distributer bars ttor connecting the contacts making up the pairs togethen i testimony whereof I have hereunto a'f- :ined my signature PAUL SIBLEY.
