IBOILED-POTATOSLICING MACHINE.
Application filed. December 15, 1921.
. Machines, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a new and improved machine with which boiled potatoes may be' sliced, for the purpose of making potato salads.
This and other objects of this invention will be fully illustrated in the drawing, described in the specification and pointed out in the claims at the end thereof.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 is a topplan view of the potato slicing machine.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the potato slicing machine.
, In the several figures of the drawing like reference numerals indicate likeparts.
For the purpose of making potatosalads the potatoes are first boiled, peeled, and allowed to cool off. The coldboiled potatoes are then sliced into suitable slices and mixed with a dressing and possibly other ingredients to complete the salad. Heretofore the slicing of the potatoes has been done by hand with the result that the slices were made irregular in size. Hand slicing. is also slow and expensive.
The machine forming the subject matter of this invention operates toflcut the slices evenly at a rapid rate of speed never before attained by the hand method. It comprises the base or bed plate 1 onwhich the magazine 2is mounted. This magazine is made up of the two sides 3 amid, the open front end 5 and rear end formed by themovable pusher plate 6. In the sides. are formed the runways 7 and 8. The pusher plate 6 is providedwith a pair of guide bars 9 and 10 which project rearwardly and engage into the runways 7 and 8 forv the purpose of guiding the pusher plate in a straight line horizontal movement between the sides 3 and 4 from one endto the other end thereof.
The pusher plate is movedback andrforth by the connecting rod which is connected to the usher plate with one end thereof for whic purposegthe pusher plate isprovided with a pair of lugs-12 and 13 n order to Specification of Letters Patent.

form suitable bearings for the wrist pin 14 carried on the end of the connecting rod 11.
The other end of the connecting rod connects to the crank pin 15 forming part of the crank disc 16'. The crank disc is keyed to the left hand endof theshaft 17 which is mounted to rotate in the bearings 18 provided on the top of the standard 19.
Keyed to the right handend of the shaft 17 islthe bevel gear 20 which meshes with the bevel pinion 21 keyed to the power shaft 22. The power shaft 22 is mounted in the bearings 23 and 24 and has the hand wheel keyed to one end thereof by means of which the machine is driven. Also keyed to the shaft 22 is the spur gear 26 which mesheswith the pinion 27 keyed to one end of the shaft 28. The other end of the shaft 28'has the cutting wheel 29 keyed thereto by means of which the potatoes are sliced as will hereinafter be described.
Mounted in the standard 19 and projecting out from under the crank disc 16 is the stud 30. A lever 31 divided into the long arm 32 and the short arm 34is mounted to rock on this stud. The short arm carries on its outer end the anti-friction roller 10 which is adapted to make contact with the periphery of the cam tO forming part of the crank disc 16.
The long arm 32 projects forward to one side of the magazine and has the links t1 and 42 connected thereto. These links connect the arm with the leaves 44: and 45 which are hinged to the top of the magazine, one at the front and the other at the rear thereof.
The cam 40 has two cam surfaces formed thereon, one which operates to rock the short arm 34L away from the center of rotation thereof, and the other which allows the arm 34to move back toward the center of rotation of the cam. This latter motion is effected by the spring 46 which is stretched between the arm 32 and a suitable point on the bed plate of the machine. WVhen the short arm of the lever is forced outwardly the long arm is raised and in so doing rocks the leaves 44 and; 45 so as to open the top of the magazine. The magazine can then be filled with potatoes. For this purpose the top of the magazine is kept open during. the rearward stroke of the pusher plate the cam 10 operating to do this during one half of its revolution.
On the forward stroke of the pusher plate the cam permits the spring to pull the arm 32 back and in so doing makes the leaves 44 and 45 fold down over the top of the magazine to keep the potatoes in place therein. In this way the potatoes can only be forced through the open end where they are being cut into slices by the wire mesh mounted at the open end 5 and the cutting wires of the cutting wheel rotating on the outside of the open end.
The cutting wheel 29 with which the potatoes are sliced as fast as they are pushed through the open end of the magazine, comprises a series of radial arms 35 which branch out from their common hub 36. At the outer end these arms are curved in the direction in which the wheel is rotated besides being set to project angularlyto the rear toward the free end of the magazine. A cutting wire is stretched between the curved end of each of the arms and a suitable point on the hub to form a series of radial cutting wires 37 which are moved past the open end of the magazine on the rotation of the cutting wheel.
The end 5 of the magazine 1 is not entirely open but has a coarse wire netting 38 placed across it. This netting does not obstruct the potatoes as they are forced through the end 5 ready to be sliced by the cutting wires 37 but operates to cut the potatoes into horizontal sections as they are being forced therethrough. In this way the potatoes are not only cut in vertical slices of even thickness but are also cut into sections lengthwise of equal dimensions. A uniform product is thus produced by the machine which not only improves the appearance of the salad made with potatoes cut with this machine, but also improves the taste thereof because each slice being of the same thickness and dimension absorbs the same amount of the ingredients with which the potatoes are mixed to make up the salad.
The operation of the potato slicing machine is as follows: 7
The potatoes after being boiled are. al lowed to cool OK so that they can be handled for the purpose of peeling them. The op erator then fills the magazine 1 with these potatoes and starts to rotate the handwheel 25. This operates to move the pusher plate into the magazine while the cover is placed over it to prevent'the potatoes from being forced out through the top of the magazine. The cover is held down over the magazine during'the forward movement of the pusher "plate caused'by'the further rotation of the hand wheel. At the same time the pusher plate is being moved forward to force the potatoes through the wire mesh at the open end of the magazine, the cutting wheel is being rotated, and as each of the cutting wires swings past the front of the magazine, the potatoes forced out of the open end of the magazine are being sliced off thereby.
This takes place until the pusher plate reaches the end of its forward travel and all the potatoes have been forced out of the magazine thereby. On further rotation of the hand wheel by the operator the pusher plate begins to move rearwardly while the cover swings open so as to allow the operator to again fill the magazinewith potatoes that will be forced therethrough and cutby the cutting mechanism on the return movement of the pusher plate as heretofore pointed out. This cyclecof operation repeats itself over and over again as long as the hand wheelis being rotated and the magazine is being filled with potatoes.
I claim:
