Description

T; CAHILL.
AERIAL BOMB. v APPLICATION FILED MAY 3, I920- I Patented May 23, 13922.
A FTOR/UEYS PATENT? @FIFHQE.
THOMAS J. CAHILL, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
AERIAL BOMB.
Application filed May 8,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, vTHoMAs J. CAHILL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Aerial Bomb, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in aerial bombs for aeronautical use.
The primary object of the present invention is to provide a bomb of the character described housing a plurality of small arm projectiles which are adapted to be simultaneously discharged therefrom by the impact of suitable detonator upon its contact with the ground.
In constructing this bomb, particular attention has been directed to the lightness of its structure, an essential feature in order to render the same useful for aeronautical work.
A further object resides in the provision of bomb body, so constructed as to present a solid outer surface which may be treated with a water proof coating thereby rendering it impervious to moisture and dampness or other destructive elements.
Another important object residesin the provision of a bomb which can be constructed from inexpensive readily attainable material and which is quickly and easily assembled thereby reducing the time and labor required for its production.
With the above recited and other objects in mind, some of which will be obvious from the following detailed description and appended claim, reference is had to the ac companying drawings which are a part of this application, and in which;
Figure 1 is a perspective view..partly in section.
Figure 2 is a horizontal sectional view therethrough.
Referring to the drawings by characters of reference which denote like parts throughout the several views thereof, the bomb body is constructed preferably of a pair of semicylindrical wooden sections designated by the numerals 10 and,11, having longitudinal dovetail tongues and grooves 12 and 13 in their confronting Walls which are adapted to mate and co-act to secure the sections together. The sections are provided with a plurality of radial circular recesses 14 ex tending from their inner surfaces to a point Specification of Letters Patent.

slightly within their outer surfaces and said recesses are lined with metallic sleeves or bushings 15,,constituting chamber 16 for the reception of bullets or projectiles 17. The closed ends of the recesses are lined with a felt disk or wad 18 and a similar wad 19 covers the inner end of the projectile. The opposite ends of the body sections 10 and 11 are threaded as at 20 to receive the closures or heads 21 and 22'having the conical portions 23. The apex of said conical portions are apertured and a shaft 24 is threaded in to the aperture of the upper head 21. The upper free end of the shaft is provided with radial blades 25 which constitute a stabilizing vane to effect vertical gravitation of the bomb upon its release from the aircraft. The aperture of the lower head is adapted to receive the upper end of a rod 26 which carries a suitable detonator 27. The lower exposed extremity of said rod is provided with an enlarged impactfoot 28 which effects an upward movement of the rod upon contact with the ground or any other solid object. A circular core 29 preferably of wood is positioned concentrically within the body and is maintained in this position by means of a cylindrical shell 30 having diametrically disposed radial fins 31 which bear against the inner surfaces of the body sections. The lower extremity 23 of the core is conical and is provided with a metallic point 33 which normally rests lightly on the detonator 27, said metallic point being de signed to prime the detonator when the foot 28 contacts with the ground and forces the same into contact therewith. The explosive charge 34 is filled in the open space between the core and the body and when ignited by the detonator effects the radial projection of the bullets from the body through the sides thereof. The rod 26 isof a suflicient length to effect the explosion of the charge when the bomb body is at an appropriate dlstance from the ground to obtain the best results. After the bomb is assembled the same is coated with a water proof coating to render the same impervious to moisture or dampness. If desired the rod 26 may be detachably associated with the detonator in order that the same may be removed to minimize the danger of an accidental explosion during its transportation.
While there has been illustrated and described a sin 1e and preferred embodiment of the inventlon, no limitation is necessarlly made to the precise details of construction as obvious changes and modifications falling within the scope of the appended claim, may be resorted to when found expedient.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desireto secure by Letters Patent In an aerial bomb, a hollow cylindrical wooden body portion having a plurality of radially extending bores communicating with its interior and terminating short of its outer periphery, whereby to provide an integral frangible exterior shell, metal bushings in the bores, projectiles located entirely within the bushings, pads within'the bushings covering the inner and outer ends of the projectiles, and the interior of said body adapted to receive a common charge for proje'cting said projectiles radially through the franglble walls of the of the charge.
