Be it known that I, PAUL Ponoonr, a citi zen of the German Republic, and a resident of Gossnitz, Saxony, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Methods and Apparatus for Roll ing In the Neck in Press-Button Parts or the like (for which was filed application S. 51,977 I/7c in Germany on January 9, 1920, by Sylbe & Pondorf, with my knowledgeand consent), of-which the following is a specification. l
The known claspor press-buttons consists of two parts, the resilient lower part, which is provided with. a head and a neck and which is pressed into the lower part, Where the head is firmly held by the spring portions of said lower part. The parts of the press buttons are drawn in groups, then cut out and finished by special machinery. In thelatter the upper parts pass between rotating disks, whereby the neck is rolled in and the head is formed. This method 1 however has the disadvantage, that the buttons must be fed to the machine by hand or by special, automatically acting devices, whereby much waste is produced.
1 This drawback is successfully obviated by the. subject-matter of the invention in such a manner, that the necks of the press-hutton parts are rolled in'by periodically opening and closing claws, which turn with vertically reciprocating spindles, the rolling being effected while the button-parts are still in the sheet-metal strip, whereby the feeding of single press-button parts, which are independent of each other, to the tools effecting the rolling in of the neck'is avoided.
In orderto further elucidate the method, the basic principles of which have already been indicated in the foregoing preamble, themachine or apparatus for performing said method will be more fully explained hereinafter. Said apparatus is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 shows the apparatus partly in front View and partly in vertical section.

through the claw-head and its conical hcaring-sleeve at the lowered position of the claw-heathspindlc and closed position of the claws and at the raised position of the clawhead-spindle and open position of the claws.
Figs. 7, 8 and 9 each shows a section through the lower button-part before and after the rolling and after the stamping.
As it can be seen from the drawings, the apparatus consists of the frame 1, in which the slide 2 is guided at 3 in such a manner, that itcan be vertically displaced (Fig. 2). To the frame 1 on each side of the same two arms 4, 5 are rigidly connected, in which the two guide-rods 6, 6 are vertically shift aloly guided. To these guide rods the plate 7 is secured by means of its eyes 8, 8. The guide-rods 6, 6 are surrounded by spiral springs 12, the upper. ends of which press against the arms a, 4:, while their lower ends engage with the eyes 8, 8 of the plate T, said springs having the tendency, of always pressing downwardly the plate 7.
' On the frame 1 the two-armed lever 10 is pivotally mounted. by ineans of the pivotbolt 9, the arm 10 of said lever being under the influence "of a (not illustrated) canidisk, while the other arm 11 engages with the lower side of the plate '7 and at the up ward oscillating movement displaces upwardly said plate with the guide-rods 6, 6, in opposition to the tension of the springs 1 In the slide 2 one or more spindles 13 are rotatably mounted, the number and arrangement of which is :in accordance with the buttons 14- prepared in the sheetanetal strip, 14. All spindles 13 are in operative connection with each other by means of gear wheels15 of equal size, securedto said spindles and by means of the intermediate gear wheel 17 which is rotatably mounted on the pin 16, so that when the spindle 13 is rotated by means of its pulley 18 from a belt drive, said rotation is also transmitted to the other spindles.
The sleeves 19, through which the spindles 13 pass freely slidably, are mounted on the plate 7 in such a manner, that they can rotate in unison, each of these spindles being provided below the plate 7 with a conical circumferential face 20. At their lower ends the spindles 13 terminate in claw-heads 21, to each of which two claws 23 are pivotally secured by means of. the pivot pins The claw-heads are provided with engaging parts 24, directedtowards the Spindle axes and serving to roll in thebutton neck; in the lowermost position of the spindle 13 the inwardly directed arms of the claws 23 project somewhat beyond the conical circumferential faces 20 of the sleeves 19.
Each of the spindles 13 is provided with a collar 26, supporting the slide 2. When the plate 7 is lifted by the oscillating movement of the lever 10, 11, the sleeves 19 strike against the collars 26 and lift the spindles 13 together with the slide 2.
For the sake of completeness it may be mentioned further that the reference numerals 27 indicate the hollow cylindrical punching-knives arranged in the same groups as thespindles 13, said punchingkni'ves being rigidly connected'to. the plate 28 and being guided with their lower ends in corresponding bores of the punchingdevice 35. Plate 28 by means of pins 28 may slide up and down in slots of the vertical. bars 30 by which plate 28 is suspended from plate 30. In the bores of the punching knives the stamping-dies 29, which are rigidly connected to the plate 30, are slidably mounted. To the plate 30 arms 32 are pivoted by means of pivot-pins 31, which arms with their inwardly directed projections 33 are supported on plate 28, whereby the plate 30 during its downward movement with the plate 28 is held in a certain distance from the latter. At their lower ends 3 1- the arms 32 are beveled, so that said arms, when striking, at their downward movement, against a beveled edge of the die-frame 35, with the beveled faces 34- will slide off of said die-frame, whereby the arms 32 with the projections 33 are drawn off from the plate 28, and the latter is released thereby.
Below the punching-device the matrixframe 36 is arranged, in which the matrices 37 are mounted, the number and arrange ment of which corresponds to that of the stamping-dies 29. i e
The operation of the device is as follows:
The sheet-metal strip 14: with the prepared press-button parts 141 is intermittently advanced in the direction of the arrow 38 (Fig, 1). Thereby the press-button parts are moved under the claw-heads 21 (Fig. 1), which are in the raised position according to Fig. 6 and on account of the rotation of their spindles are held in open position by means of the centrifugal force action upon the claws 23. At this moment the lever arm 11 moves downwardly and releases the plate 7,
which latter pressed downwardly into the position shown in Figs. 1 and 4; by means of the spiral springs 12. Simultaneously the slide 2 with the spindles is'lowered, until the latter engage with the little heads 14; of the press-button parts (Fig. 4) As the plate 7 with the sleeves 19 moves fora certain dis tance further downwardly than the spindles 18, the conical circumferential faces 20'of the sleeves actupon the arms 25, whereby the same are forced away f'roni e ach other and the claws 25. are caused to approach each other, until the are in close engagement with the neck of the press-button part. As the claws are rotating with the spindles they will roll in the press-button necks. On account of the upward oscillating movement of the lever arm 11 the sleeves 19 move again upwardly, which results in anopening of the claws. The sleeves 19then strike against the collars 26 of the spindles and lift the same with the slide 2, whereupon the sheetmetal strip is again advanced. I
The pressbutton parts with the rolled in necks are finally moved under the punching device 35 and are here cut out by means of the punchingknives 27, moving downwardly together with the stamping-dies 29 (Fig. 8). The latter, which thenmove still farther downwardly, press the cut out press-button parts 14L through the downwardly reduced matrices 37, whereby the press-button parts receive the desired shape, which is illustrated inFig.9.
Having thus particularly described the nature of my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. Apparatus for rolling in the necks in press-button parts comprising in combination a vertically reciprocable slide, a plural ity of spindles rotatably mounted in said slide, means to rotate the spindles, a clawhead provided at the lower end of each of said spindles,claws pivoted to each of said claw-heads and'adapte'd to effect in closing position the rolling in of the button-necks, downwardly conicallyreduced sleeves, r0- tatably mounted in a vertically reciprocalole plate and loosely surrounding said spindles, said sleeves being "adapted to engage with said. claw-heads and to thereby effect the closing of the claws, pivotedtosaid clawheads, a two-armed lever; adapted tolbe oscillated and to thereby effect the upwardmovement of said plate, and spiral springs, adapted to effect the downward movement of thesame. p
2. Apparatus for rolling in the necks in press-button parts, comprising in combination a vertically reciprocable slide, a plural ity of spindles, rotatably mounted in saidslid'e means to rotate the" spindles, collars secured to said spindles and adapted to carry said slide, a claw head rovided atthe lower end of each of said spindles, claws pivoted to each ofsaid claw-heads and adapted to effect in closing position therolling in of the button-necks, downwardly coni'cally reduced sleeves, rotatably mounted in a vertically reciprocable plate and loosel'y'snrrounding said spindles, Said plate engaging at the upward movement with the collars of said spindles and thereby lifting said spindles and said slide, a two-armed lever engaging with the lowersicle of said plate, said lever being adapted to be oscillated and to thereby effect the upwarclanovement of said plate and spiral springs arranged on arms of the machine frame and adapted to effect the downward, movement of the plate.
