imam- To all whom it may cbrwern Be it known that l, FMMETT 1L. BAILEY, a
citizen of; the 'United States, residing at Williamson, in .the county of Mingo and- State. of West Virginia, haveinvented oertain new and useful Improvements in Mine pars, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in mine cars, the object being to provide a non-wreckable and non-breakable mine car having its sides constructed of steel and provided with a wooden bottom having the floor planks extended to support the bumper beams;
Another. and further object of the invention is to provide a mine car which is exceedingly simple and cheap in construction andqne which .is very strong and durable,
. the same being provided with angular. sills so arranged that the body proper of the car is supported in arigid position to withstand the strain to which it is subjected.
Another and further object of the inven-. tion is to provide a novel form of bumper so constructed that the same isreinforced by the floor plankin .of the car.
Other and furt er objects and advantages of the invention will be hereinafter set forth and the novel features thereof defined by the appended claims' Figure 1 isa top All side sills which are preferably formed of angle iron and under which are arranged.
wooden, end sills 2, intermediate metal cross bearers 3 and central cross bearers 4: which are preferably formed of 'T-iron and are extended outwardly to each side, as shown in Fig. 1. v
Arranged on the sills and cross bearers is a floor sheet formed of wooden planking 5,
the ends of which are extended, as clearly Application tiled an 2t,
specification of Letters Patent. Pgptgntgdl Maw 23, 1%22,
I 1919. terlal W0. 312F37- shown, the central plank having an angular member 6 secured thereto forming a bumper. Extending lon itudinally of the car is a draw bar 7provi ed with links 8 at its ends, as clearly shown in Fig. 1.
The side sills 1 are provided with suitable journal boxes 9 in which are mounted axles- 10 provided with wheels 11, one wheel 'on each axle being fixed thereto and the other being loosely mounted thereon. Said wheels extend upward through openings formed in the planking and are protected by. wheel shrouds 12. The axles are supported. in the journal boxes by brasses 13, constructedas shown in Fig. A.
Mounted on the structure thus formed is a body provided with vertical sheet steel sides and ends, the u per edges of which .carry angle irons 14, said body having corner posts 15 and side standards 16, which are secured to the sheet siding by rivets, as
clearly shown in'Fig. 6. 1
Arranged on the planking at each end are angle irons lt to which the lower edges of the ends are secured, the lower edges of the sides being secured to the vertical flanges of .the side sllls 1. By this construction a car'body is formed having the, floor sheet or bottom formed of wooden plahki steel body in which theside stan ards are with a hit so mounted that an extremely strong support is formed. The car thus formed is provided with an ordinary brake 18 constructed in the'usual manner.
The side sills are extended outwardl be-- yond'the corner posts 15 and the en 5 of the planking are cut off obliquely, as shown I in Fig. 1, over which are arranged angle irons 19. The wooden end sills 2 are secured in position by braces 20, and arranged in the center in a line with the bumper '6 are blocks 21 which carry angle irons 22 which extend upwardly under the angle irons 6, as clearly shown, "in order to produce a support which will withstand the. shock of the car, asit is of the adjacent car.
The angle irons 6-and 22 the central planking ofthe bottom of the car by bolts 23. 1
From the foregoing description it W-lll be seen that l have provided a mine car with a frame formed of angle irons on which is mounted a wooden bottom carrying a metal 11W brought into engagement with the bumper are secured in position over the blocks 21 and the ends of rat ing corner posts and standards, the planks 7 of said flooring extending outwardly beyond the end thereof, the central plank of said body having an angular member arranged thereon, a'filler block arranged between said angular member and the wooden end sill of said car, an angle iron arranged over said filler block extending upwardly under the first mentioned angle iron and a bolt extending through the horizontal portions of said angle irons, filler block and central plank'of said flooring.
2. A mine car having a metal frame formed of angular members provided with a wooden bottom formed of longitudinally I disposed planks, a sheet metal body mounted upon said bottom, said planking extending outwardly beyond the ends of said body, angular members arranged over the outwardly extending ends of said planking, the central plank of said body having an angular member arranged thereon, a filler block arranged under said angular member and the wooden end sill of said car and an angular member secured over said filler block by a bolt passing through said angular members and filler block. a
3. A mine car having a frame formed of angular members and a bottom formed of planking, said planking extending longitudinally of said car having a body mounted thereon formed of sheet metal, said planking extending outwardly beyond the ends of the body, wooden sills arranged at the ends of said car and a bumper arranged beyond said wooden sills formed of oppositely arranged angular members and a filler block secured together by a bolt extending through said planking, filler block and angular members.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
