To all whom t may `concern y Be it known that I, Hic-NRI K. SANDELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at 221 South Green Street, Chicago, in lthe county of. Cook and State of illinois, have invented a newy and useful Improvement in Plionograph Drive Mechanism, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to phonographs, particularly of theI disc type and to dynamo electric drive mechanism ysuitable toreusevin connection therewith.' It will be :hilly understood from the following description thereof, illustrated by the accom panying drawings, in which:

Referring more particularly to the draw-A ings, the numeral y10 indicates the `top of a cabinet, to which the drive-motor and 'disc support are secured. Within the boss 20 is a vertical shaft 21, the lower end of which enters a bearing opening 22' in the bridge 18. 4The shaft 21 is centered in the boss 20 by the thrust bearing 23 mounted on the boss 2O and serving also as a -ilournalfor the shaft'21. The disc supporting table 24 is supported. upon the shaft 22 and is provided with a depending boss 25 through which the shaft 21 passes.
A number of depending posts 26 are se` cured to the under-,side ot the table 241 and to these are secured an annular rotor member 27 formed of laminations 28 and likewise a ring 29 ["rom which radial webs 30 extend to and are secured to the. boss 25 dependingfrom the table 24. The'laminations of the rotor member 27, as shown more Clearly in Fig. 8, are provided with slots 31, certain of `which at regularly spaced intervals are enlarged for the reception of coils, and are shown at 32. When the laminations 28 are assembled to form the rotor, a copper grid or squirrel cage 33- is fitted into the slots 31, as shown in elevation in Fig. 7.

Then the switch is thrown to its reverse position, the series of coils 34 and lll are cut out and the coils 17 and 17a act upon the rotor provided with the squirrel cage to form an alternating current motor as set forth in my prior application Serial No. 290,705,1iled April 17, 1919, which is a division of my earlier application Serial No. 226,804, filed April 5, 1918.

In a dynamo-electric drive for phonographs, a rotor secured to the phonograph table, said rotor comprising a magnetic ring, and a plurality of series connected windings at spaced angular' intervals around the ring, a stator having a plurality of angularly spaced series connected pole windings and means for passing intermittent direct our rent impulses simultaneously through the stator and rotor windings, said means comprising a contact ring having a sine-wave contour, an oscillatable fork straddling the ring, said fork having on each side' of the ring a contact member and a friction member spaced apart one-half of a wave of the ring, the contact member on each side facing the friction member on the other and being spaced therefrom somewhat more than the thickness of the ring whereby the contact members make contact with the ring simultaneously over one-half of each wave of the ring.
2. ln a dynamoelectric drive for phonographs, a rotor secured to the phonograph table, said rotor comprising a magnetic ring, and a plurality of series connected windings :it spaced angular intervals around the ring, a stator having a plurality of angularly spaced series connected pole windings and means for passing intermittent direct current impulses simultaneously through the stator and rotor windings, said means comprising a contact ring having a sine-wave contour, an oscillatable fork straddling the ring, said fork having on each side of the ring a contact member and a friction member spaced apart oneshalf of a wave of the ring, the contact member on each side facing the friction member on the other and being spaced therefrom somewhat more than the thickness of the ring whereby the contact members make contact with the ring simultaneously over one-half of each wave of the ring, and means for varying the periodicity of cscillation of the fork whereby it acts to govern the rate of travel of the ring by its braking effect thereon.

5. A circuit control device comprising a contact ring having a sine-wave contour, an oscillatable fork straddling said ring, said fork having on each side of the-ring a contact member and a friction member spaced apart one-half of a wave of the ring, the contact member on each side of the ring facing the friction member on the other and being spaced therefrom .somewhat more than the thickness of the ring, and means for rotating the ring whereby the contact members make contact with the ring simultaneously over one-half of each wave of the ring, and means for varying the periodicity of oscillation of the fork whereby it acts to govern the rate of travel of the ring by its braking effect thereon.
6. In a dynamo electric drive for phonographs, a rotor secured to the phonograph table, said rotor comprising a magnetic ring, a copper grid embracing the ring and a plurality of coils at spaced angular intervals around the ring to form poles when energized, a first stator segment provided with spaced coils to form poles when energized, a second stator segment provided vwith spaced coils for producing a rotating field when energized by an alternating current, a contact ring having a sine-wave contour secured to the phonograph table, an oscillating on cach side of the ring a contact member and a friction member spaced apart onehalf of a wave length of the ring, the contact member on each'side facing the friction member on the other and being spaced therefrom somewhat more than the thickness of the ring, whereby the contact members make contact with the ring simultaneously over one-half of each wave of the ring, means for varying the periodicity of oscillation of the fork whereby it acts to govern the rate of travel of the ring by its braking effect thereon, series circuit connection between the contact ring and the rotor coils and the first stator segment and means for selectively directing current from a main line through said series connected elements or through the coils of the second stator segment.
