Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed November 1, 1921. Serial No. 512,029.
To allie/Lamina@ concern.: i
. Be it known that l, FRANK X. lli/Lirama useful Spring Hinge; and l do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and enact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to malte `and use the same.
r'he invention relates` to spring' hingesof the type used in connection with screen doors, and has for its object to provide a hinge of this character having a double spring, thereby providing means whereby upon breakage of one of the springs the hinge will not be rendered worthless and inoperative. Also to provide one of the leaves of the hinge with apertures. which apertures receive L-shaped lugs carried by a plate secured to the door frame., said lugs and apertures forming means whereby the hinge may be easily and quickly removed from the door frame without the use of a screw driver.
A further object is to provide the door carried leaf with a lug, which lug when the door is partially opened is engaged by a pivoted :finger thereby vholding leaves of the hinge at angles to each other and allowing the hinge to be quickly detached from the lugs carried by the plate secured to the `door frame. Also to provide'a finger engaging member on the door frame carried leaf whereby said leaf may be easily raised against the action of the springs.
lWith the above and other objects in view the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter set liorth, shown in the drawings, described and l` claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
4 operation.
Figure 5 is a perspective view of thepivoted leaf holding member.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral (l) designates a portion of a door frame, and a a portion of a screen door. It is the present practice to remove screen doors from the door opening during the winter and store the same until the following summer. When this is done, it is necessary to detach the screen hinge from the door frame 1 to which it is `attached by screws, hence a great deal ofiworlr is involved and at the same time when `doors are again hung the holes are stripped or enlarged incident to constant use.- rl`he hinge 3 comprises a leaf l having outstanding flanges 5, to which flanges are pivotallv connected by means of a hinge pin. (5, the flanges of a hinge leaf 8. Leaf 8 is detachably connected to a plate 9 which is secured to a door frame 1 by means of l--shaped lugs l0, which lugs overlie the inner edge l1 of the leaf 8, and is held against displacement on the plate 9 by the flange 12 carried by the outer edge of the plate 9, which engages the outer edge of the leaf 8. lt will be noted by referring to Figure 2 that when the screen door 2 is moved in the direction of the arrow a that coiled springs 18, which are carried by the pins G and have their opposite extending ends 14- in engagement with the outer faces of the leaves 8 and e, the leaf S will be maintained in engagement with the plate 9 at all times during a door opening and closing .However when it is desired to detach the leaf 8 from the plate 9, this may be accomplished by 'pulling outwardly on the linger engaging member l5 carried by the leaf El and removing said leaf 8 -from its interengageinent with the hoolred lugs l() carried by the plate 9. However if it Ais desired to hold the leaf et at an outward obtuse anglo to the platel 8, this may be accomplished by manually opening the door to the desired position', and then moving` the pivoted member 16 until its end 17 is placed in engagement with the flange 18 carried by the inner edge of the leaf 4l thereby preventing the leaf 4e from moving inwardly against the action of the coiled springs 19. When the leaves are held at an angle to each other as described above, it will be seen that upon an inward movement of the door 2 the outer end of the leaf will move outwardly from engagement with the plate 9 to a position where the hinge may be easily and quickly moved out of engagement with the hooked lugs 10, thereby allowing the door to be easily and quickly removed from the door frame for storage purposes. The plate 9 remains attached to the door iframe 1 at all times, and consequently when the door is again hung is properly positioned for use. The plate 9 is secured to the door frame by means of screws 19 and the plate 8 is pret'- erably provided with apertures 20, which register with the screws 19, thereby allowing the screws 19 to be tightened or adjusted without removing the door from the door opening.
From the above it will be seen that a screen door hinge is provided which is siniple in construction and one which may be easily and quickly attached to a door frame.
The invention having been set forth what is claimed as new and useful is 1. A hinge comprising pivotally connected leaves, the adjacent edges ot' the leaves being spaced from each other, a supporting plate, hooked lugs carried by said plate and adapted to hook over the inner edge of one of the leaves, a flange. carried by the supporting plate and engaging the outer end of said last .named lcl t, a lug` extending` outwardly at an angle from one et the leaves, a member pivoted to the leaflf without the lug. said pivoted member being olf sui'licient length to hold the leaves at angles to e;` rh other when its end is in engagement with the lug, the pivotal point of the leaves being outwardly disposed in relation to the adj-arent edges of the leaves and springs ior normally lorcing said leaves in the direction o lI alignment with each other.
2. A spring hinge comprising hingedly connected leaves, springs :i'or normally `l'oreing said leaves towards an alignml posiimi1 a lug carried by one olf said leaves, a ineinber pivoted to the other leal und adapted to be moved into engagement with the lug` ol' the adjacent leaiI 'for holding the leaves in angular positions in relation to eaeh other.
In testimony whereoll l have signed in v name to this specification in they presenf-e of two subscribing witnesses.
