Description
H. A. SCHMIDT; FASTENING DEVICE. APPLICATION FILED-DEC.7. 1921.
Patented May 23, 1922.
HENRY A. SCHIDIIIDT, OF PIHIOIEIB'US, VIRGINIA.
FASTENING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters latent.
Patented May. 23, 1922.
Application filed December 7, .1921. Serial No. needs.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY A. SCHMIDT,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Phoebus, in the county of Elizabeth City and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fastening Devices, of which the following is a specification. Y
This invention relates to fastening devices especially adaptedf or use in securing floor coverings in position.
An important object is to provide a fastening device having'novel means whereby the same may be employed for securing the adjacent edges of a floor covering flatly in position so that the edges of the floor covering will not be permitted to curl or wear rapidly.
A further object is to provide a fastening device having novel means whereby the outer edges of a floor covering may be secured in position.
A further object is to provide a fasten ing device which is simple to apply, neat in ap earance and cheap to manufacture.
ther objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of thefollowing description.
' In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
Figure 1 is a perspective of the fastening means for securing the outer edges of the covering in position. 7
Figure 2 is a fragmentary perspective of a fastening device employed for connecting the meeting edges of the covering.
Figure 3 is a detail sectional view taken on line 3-3 of Figure 1'.
In the drawing wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of the invention the numeral 5 designates a floor covering such as a piece of linoleum and which is adapted to be held in position by means of binding strips generally designated by the numeral 6. The binding strips are formed from lengths of metal each of which is bent longitudinally to provide upper and lower covering contact strips or flanges 8 and 10 respectively. As illustrated in Figure 1, the end portion of'one binding strip is extended into the adjacent end portion of another binding strip so as to provide a neat connection and so as to provide an additional wearing surface at the corners of the covering. Specifically, the upper and lower flanges 8 and 10 of one of the strips are received within the groove provided by the upper and lower flanges of the other strip.
In the form of the invention illustrated in Figure 2 the fastening device is formed from a single length of metal 12 which is so formed to provide a means for connecting the adjacent edges of the floor covering. The strip of metal 12 is formed intermediate its longitudinal edges with outwardly directed portions 14.- drawn closely together so as to provide a metallic wall of a double thickness between the meeting edges of the covering. a
The metal between the outwardly directed portions 14 is flattened so as to provide a pair of oppositely directed flanges or walls 16 which lie flatly in contact with the top of the covering at the meeting edges of the same. It will be observed .that the top flanges 16 and the base plates 18 formed by the bending process define oppositely arranged grooves which receive the edge portions of the floor covering.
As the upper flanges 16' are formed of upper and lower layers rounded outer edges are formed on the flanges 16 whereby rapid wear on the fastening means is prevented.
Summarized, it might be stated that the construction illustrated in Figure 2 embodies a pair of base plates between which is located a T-shaped member having laterally directed flanges whichflatly contact with the top of the floor covering and being of a double thickness so as to prevent rapid wear.
In the use of the improved floor covering means, 'the covering is inserted into the spaces between the flanges ,and the base plates and a 'suificient space is left to allow for the expansion of the covering. Suitable fastening devices such as tacks may be employed for securing the metallic plates in position.
I claim:
1. A fastening for floor coverings consisting of a pair of base plates, upwardly ex tending portions formed along the adjacent edges of said base plates, and laterally diin; of a pair of base plates, upwardly exed flanges consisting of upper and lower tending portions formed along the adjacent layers having their outer edges joined. 10 edges of said base plates, and laterally di- In testimony whereof, I have afiixed my rected flanges formed at the upper edges of signature in the presence of two witnesses.
said upwardly extending portions and co- HENRY A. SCHMIDT. operating witn the base plates in defining a Witnesses: pair of grooves for the reception of the meet- 0-. W. WARD,
