Application filed April 28,
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, l/Varrrnn E. DA'SIP woon, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of SanFrancisco and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in File Protectors, of which the following is a speclfication.
This invention relates to improvements in pile protectors and has for its principal object the provision of means whereby piles such as are used about docks, wharves, bridging and the like may be protected from destructive forces such as t-eredos, wood borers and others which are carried about by the action of the waves.
Another object is to produce a pile protector which may be applied to piles which have already been driven and one which may be easily and quickly placed thereabout.
A further object of this invention is to construct a pile protector at a nominal cost and produce one which when erected will make a single unit structure, thereby simplifying the construction, and to produce a pile which will be able to weather for a long period of time the action of salt and fresh waters by virtue of its compact construction.
A still further object is to provide means whereby concrete or a like plastic substance may be poured about the pile and permanently retained.
Other objects and advantages of this invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same.
Figure 1 is atop plan view of a pile having my protector placed thereabout.
Figure 2 is a side elevation of oneof the halves of my protector.
Figure 3 is a side elevation similar to Figure 2 showing the other half of my protector.
It is a well known fact that piling about docks is quickly destroyed by the action of many water-borne, wood destroying forms of animal life, such as teredos. These teredos enter the grain of the wood, consume the fibre and after a short period leave the pile entirely honeycombed.
There have been many methods employed heretofore for the prevention of this destruc- Specification of Letters Patent. i

tion, such as creosoting, etc., but such methods do not seem to be of permanent value; and, it is for this reason that I have devised this pile protector.
In the drawings wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a. preferred embodiment of my invention the numerals 5 and 6 refer to two sections which are preferably semicircular in shape. These sections are made of cement, glass, porcelain, terra cotta, tile or any similar substance and for the purpose of greatest etliciency are glazed or enameled on all exposed surfaces.
Section 5 is provided with a depression 7 in its top edge which is adapted to join the depression 8 in the top edge of the section 6 so as to form an annular depression about the top of the completed. protector.
A foot piece 8 is formed on the bottom of the section 5 as is a similar foot piece 9 formed on the bottom of the section 6. These two foot pieces are adapted to be seated in the groove formed by depressions 7 and 8 in the next lower completed pile protector section.
Vertical depressions 11 and 12 are formed in the section 6 and are adapted to receive vertical ribs 13 and 14; formed upon the section 5.
A series of outstanding lugs 16'and 17, 18 and 19 are formed on each of the sections and are each provided with openings therethrough for the reception. of tie-rods as is best shown in Figure 1 and indicated by the numeral 21. I
A. circular reinforcing rod 29, may be placed about the pile and also tied to the lugs as indicated in this figure. while the numeral 22 designates concrete or like plastic substance which is adapted to be poured about the pile and permanently retained in position between the pile and sections by its hardening action and the disposition of the tie rods.
For the purpose of more securely binding the sections lugs 23 and 2a are provided on pjaph section for the reception of attaching In assembling these various sections one above the other and about the pile, the joints are broken as indicated in dotted lines at A.
and B of Figure 1.
Thus, it will be seen that I have provided a pile protector, which is built up of a number of sections, one section above the other,
IOU
Having thus described my inyeniton, I claim In a device for protecting piles, plurality of segmental sections assembledto form superposed cylinders, the adjacent segments being connected by interlocking means, and
additional. means for securing the sections one to another, saidmeans comprising lugs placed on the innerperipheries of the segments and cross ties connecting said lugs.
In testimony whereof I, atlix my signature.
