Description

J. STALDER'.
POST. APPLICATION men MAY'IS. 1921.
Patented May 16, 1922.
2 SHEETS-SHEETI.
INVENTOR ATTORNEY WITNESSr STATES PATE'I' POST.
T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN WILLIAM STALDER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lincoln, in the county of Lancaster and State of Nebraska, have invented new and useful Improvements in Posts, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to posts or poles and has for an object the provision of a reinforced concrete structure, which may be manufactured either asfa pole for the support of telegraph wires and the like, or a post for fences, buildings or other structures.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a structure as above stated, which will accommodate various types of devices for connection with telegraph or fence wires and the like and in addition, provide for removable and adjustable engagement with a support for the accommodation of persons working at any height upon the post or pole.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention further includes the following novel features and details of construction, to be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in appended claims.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a front elevation of a post or pole constructed in accordance with the invention, a telegraph cross arm being shown in position at the top of the post or pole and in addition, a wire fastening device and a support are also shown applied. 7
Figure 2 is a fragmentary side view of the same.
Figure 3 is a top plan view.
Figure 4 is a front elevation of a fence post showing the manner of securing the line wires thereto.
Figure 5 is a transverse sectional view of the same.
Figure 6 is a front elevation illustrating the manner of engagement between the supporting device and pole.
Figure 7 is a fragmentary perspective view of the post or pole.
Figure 8 is a detail perspective view of the fastening device shown in Figure 4:.
Figure 9 is a similar view of the supporting member.
Referring in detail to the drawings, wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the reference character 10 Specification of Letters Patent. Patentgdl Iflay 16, 1922,

indicates the post or pole Which is formed of concrete or other cementitious mixture. The post is provided along one face with a slot or groove 11 and is reinforced by a metallic member which is preferably formed from a single sheet of metal and shaped to provide a substantially rectangular portion 12, from which extends a passage formed by spaced flanges 13. These flanges abut the walls of the slot 11 so as to provide a lining for the said slot. Opposite the slot 11, the reinforcing member is formed with a substantially circular portion to provide a passage 14, the latter being designed to accommodate electric wires when desired. The reinforcing member thus provides a wire passage which has a substantially T-shaped slot for the accommodation of various devices.
One of these devices consists of a cross arm 15, by means of which telegraph or other wires may be supported upon the pole, the said arm being secured in position by a bolt whose head 16 is adjustable longitudinally within the portion 12 ofthe the reinforcing member and whose shank extends through the slot and through the arm 15 and receives an. adjusting nut 17. In order to prevent pivotal movement of the arm, the latter has pivotally secured near each end a brace 18, one end of which is pivotally secured to the arm and the opposite end provided with a right angular extension 19 for entrance within the slot 11.
As a means for securing a fence or other wires there is provided a fastening device which includes a body portion having an opening 20 therein for the passage of a bolt similar to the one previously described. the said body portion further including oppositely extending arms 21 which are adapted to engage over a wire 22 so as to clamp the latter to the face of the post. A lug 23 extends at right angles from the body portion of the fastening device and enters the slot 11 so as to hold the said device against pivotal movement. One of these devices may be so adjusted upon the post as to provide a stop for preventing longitudinal movement of the ends of the braces 18 within the slot.
For the purpose of providing a support for persons working at any height along the pole, there is provided an adjustable device which includes laterally extending arms 24, from which extends a shank 25 which is adapted to enter the slot 11 and is provided with a transverse head 26 which lies within the rectangular portion 12 of the reinforcing member and permits of the outward pivotal movement of the support. The head 26 may be inserted within the reinforcing member by disposin the said head longitudinally within the slot 11 and giving the support a quarter turn so that the head will lie within the rectangular portion 12. To hold the support in position, there is provided an arm 27 which extends from the arms 21 in a di rection opposite to the shank 25, the said arm 27 being provided with an inwardly extended wedge-shaped member 28 which is adaptedto be wedged between the walls of the slot and to frictionally hold the support in position. As the flanges 13 which form a lining for the walls of the slot ll permit of a certain amount of give, thesupport may be secured in position against accidental dis placement.
The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope 01" the appended claims.
Having described the invention what is claimed is 1- 1. A post formed of cementitious material and provided with a groove extending longitudinally along one face thereof, an entrance passage extending therefrom, the walls of said passage lying within and forming the walls of the longitudinally extending groove and a cable passage upon the side of the rectangular portion opposite the groove, inwardly extending longitudinally disposed spaced ribs located at the intersection of the rectangular portion and cable passage and providing restricted communication there between and headed fastening devices engageable in said groove.
2. A post formed of cementitious material and provided with a groove extending longitudinally along one face thereof, a metallic reinforcing member extending longitudi nally of the post, said member being formed of a single sheet of metal and shaped to provide a cross sectional rectangular portion, an entrance passage extending therefrom, the walls of said passage lying within and form ing the walls of the longitudinally extending groove and a cable passage upon the opposite side of the rectangular portion opposite the groove, inwardly extending longitudinally disposed spaced ribs located the intersection of the rectangular portion and cable passage and providing restricted communication th'erebetween and headed fastening devices engageable' in said groove.
The combination with a post having a substantially T-shape'd groove extending longitudinally therefrom, of a support cemprising a headed member engageable within the groove, an arm extending therefrom through said groove, supports extending from said arm and a wedge-shaped groove engaging extremity formed on the arm In testimony whereof I afiix my signatrlre.
