Speciflcation of Letters Patent.
Application filed October 23, 1918. Serial No. 259,415.
5 7 Avenue de Saint-Mand), have invented .a new and useful Generator for Electric Lamps, which improvements are fully set forth in the following specification.
The present inventlon relates to gen- 10 'erators, and in particular to an improved generator which is designed primarily for use in connection with or as a part of a pocket or other portable electric lamp, or of a stationa lamp, and in which the ourrent is derive from a magneto or alternator included in the structure in lace of the. more usual battery or accumu ator.
An embodimentof the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in" which:-- 7
Figures 1 and 2 are vertical sectional views at right angles to each other through one form of generator, the sections being taken,
on line 1 -1, Figure 2-, and gum Figure 3 is a vertical sectional view showingia slight modification.
eferrlng more particularly to the draw- 1n s, 1 indicates a multi-vpolar magnet with respectivel 89 p0 esof alternate sign, loosely mounted on a shaft orspindle 26. This magnet is encircled by' an annular armature 5, the pole pieces 6 of which carry'the usual coils 7,
the parts thus far described being enclosed within a casing comprising sections 8 and 9 which are fastened together by bolts 10. The driving mechanism of the ma et is contained within the casing 8, an may a take various forms, as will be understood.
According to the arrangement disclosed, themagnet has fastened to it a pinion 27, preferably driven by planetary gearing, here shown as comprlsing two gears 28 mounted on two pins or studs which are carried by 4; a disk same gears'meshing with a fixed, internally toothed ring 30. Disk 29 may be driven in any suitable' manner; for exam 1e, it may be provided upon one face wit a pivotally mounted awl"33 which co-operates with a ratchet w eel 32 to which a drum 31 is secured, the drum being rotated in one direction by means of a manuallyoperated band 34 which is ased over and connected to its periphery, t e return movement of the drum bein produced by coil spring 35 disposed wit in'the drum and connected at one end thereto. In place of this spring, however, a spring mrto: of any desired character and indicated generally at 36, in Figure 3 may be used; but in either case, the rotation of the disk 29 will cause the two gears 28 to travel around with it, said gears being rotated at such time owing to their engagement with the ,fixed ring gear 30 and transmitting their rotation to pinion 27, to which the ,magnet is directly may likewise be employed, both in general for rotating the magnet, and in articular for driving the planetary gearing, if utilized, while stillremaining within the scope ofthe inventiom "I claim as my invention 1. In a device of the character described, the combination of a casing; a generator within the casing including a rotatable magnet; and mechanism for rotating said magnet comprising a pinion on the axle of the magnet, a planetary gear train connected to drive said pinion, and operating means for said planetary gear train.
2. In a device of the the combination of a casing; a generator within the casing including a rotatable mag- .net; and mechanism for rotating said'magattached." Various other equivalent devices character described,
revolubly mounted on said disk in mesh with 7 said pinion, a ring gear fixed in said casing in mesh with both gears and encircling the same, and means for driving said disk. 3. In a device of the character described, the combination of a casing; a generator within the casing including a rotatable mag net; and mechanism for rotating said magnet comprising a pinion on the axle of the magnet, a rotatable disk, a pair of gears revolubly mounted on said diskjn mesh with said pinion, a ring gear fixed in said casing inimesh with both gears and encircling the same, a pinion disposed co-axially with said disk, a pawl-and-ratchet connection between 4 the second-named pinion and said disk -to drive the latter from the former, and means for rotating the second-named inion.
. In testimony whereof I have signed this s ification. v
