Description

R. H. PIERCE AND G. A. ANDERSON.
DEMOUNTABLE RIM- APPLICATION FILED JUNE 91 192i.
Patented May 16, 1922.
- lA/l/E/VTOHS R. H. PIERCE GEORGE/ANDERSON ATTORNEYS WITNESSES stares RALPH H. PIERCE AND GEORGE A, ANDERSON, OF EUGENE, OREGON.
Application filed June 9, 1921.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, RALPH H. PIERCE and Gnoncn A. ANDERSON, citizens of the United States, and residents of Eugene, in the'county of Lane and State of Oregon, have invented a new and Improved Demountable Rim, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in demountable rims, an object of the invention being to provide a simple positive locking device for attaching rims to vehicle wheels.
Another object is to provide a device which will facilitate the changing of rimsand which may be adjusted for wear.
Still another object is to provide a demountable rim in which the use of bolted-on lugs is eliminated, and a rim which will be practical in construction, strong, durable and eflicient in use, and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a fragmentary view in side elevation illustrating our improved rim in applied position Figure 2 is a fragmentary view in longitudinal section through the rim, felly and expanding, mechanism, on the line 22 of Figure 3;
Figure 3 is a broken view in transverse section through the rim;
Figure 4 is an enlarged plan view illustrating the details of the expanding mechanism; and
Figure 5 is an edge view of Figure 4.
Referring in detail to the drawings, 1 represents a conventional form of channelled steel felly. The outer side of the felly terminates in an outwardly and upwardly pre sented flange 2, engageable with a depending bevelled annular rib 4, on a rim 5.
We have illustrated a rim of the conventional clincher type. Adjacent the other side of the rim, it is provided-with an inwardly presented annular bevelled rib 6, which is ordinarily held in place by a flange 6 on the felly 1. Vith our invention, however, a portion of the felly is cut away, as indicated at 7 and a portion of the rib 6 is engaged by an outstru'ck flange 8 integral with an ar- Specification of Letters Batent.

the rim.
Various expedients might be resorted to for imparting this desired circumferential movement to the member 9. We have illustrated one convenient mechanism for doing The felly 1 is provided with an instruck portion such as 12, to conveniently acco1nmodate the actuating mechanism. A bolt 13 is journalled transversely in the felly 1 and includes a head such as 14, located on the outside of the felly. This bolt acts as a crank shaft and is rigidly connected to a crank arm such as 15. A hollow internally threaded sleeve 16 includes at one end a bifurcated portion 17 straddling the crank arm 15 and pivotally connected thereto by a pin 18. A cross bar 19 operatively connected to the inner face of the member 9, as indicated at 20, carries a threaded post 21, which fits Within the sleeve 16.
From the foregoing description, it will be apparent that by applying a wrench to the head 14 of the bolt 13, and turning the bolt, the member 9 may be positively moved in either circumferential direction through the medium of the crank arm 15, sleeve 16 and cross bar 19. This movement of the member 9 will thus move the flange 8 into engagement with the rib 6, or will positively move the flange 8 out of the path of the rib 6 to permit removal of the rim 5,
- Secured to the outer face of the felly is a locking arm 22 of any suitable spring metal, connected at one end, as indicated at 23, to the felly. The free end of the spring arm is formed with an opening 24, receiving the head of the bolt and locking the bolt against accidental movement. This lock may be used to hold the shoe 9 in either expanded or contracted position.
In order to take up wear on the blocks 10 and 11, the threaded post 21 may be screwed further out of the sleeve 16, as will be readily understood.
Although We have illustrated one of the preferred embodiments of our invention, it will be evident that various slight changes and alterations might be made in the general form and arrangement of the parts described Without departing from the invention and hence we do not wish to limit ourselves to th precise details set tortln but shall consider ourselves at liberty to make such slight changes and alterations as fairly iall within.
and means for turning said shaft.
2. The combination with a channelled wheel itelly and a rim mounted on the telly, of an arc-shaped member located in the telly, means whereby circumferential movement of said. member locks the rim on the-telly, means for movin said member ciii-cumterentially, said last mentioned means including a shaft journaled in the telly, a crank arm carried by the shaft, a link connecting the crank arm and arc-shaped member, said link including a pair of threaded telescoping members. and means for turning said shaft.
3. The combination with a wheel telly and a rim on the telly, of an arcuate member interposed between the rim and. telly, coacting wedge shaped lugs carried by said member and the telly, whereby circumferential movement of the member locks the rim on the telly, actuating means for said member and means for adjusting said actuating means to take up wear on the lugs.
