BALL COCK.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, Louis NAIR, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Britain, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ball Cocks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in ball cocks of the form used for waterclosets, and the object of my improvement is to produce a ball cock that will operate to maintain the valve for the water open full for substantially the entire period of flow by having the float operatively disconnected from the valve-closing means dur ng such period of flow except for a brief 1nterval when the tank is substantially filled to the extent desired, when the float engages the said valve-closing means and serves to shut oi? the water by means of a relatively quick movement, the invention being adapted for use with valves that differ materially as to the details of construction.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved ball cock.
Figure 2 is a plan view of the same.
Figure 3 is a view on an enlarged scale, being part in side elevation and part in section on the line 33 of Fig. 2.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary view corresponding to Fig. 3 with the parts in a dlfferent position.

My improved ball cock is adapted to be supported from the bottom of the tank for a water-closet by means of a threaded nipple 10 on the lower part of the cock body 11 and a clamping nut 12, the said nipple 10 being also adapted to connect with the water supply system.
At the upper end of the cock body 11, and substantially above the nipple 10, is a valve chamber 13 that is provided in the lower part of a head 14.
The head 14 is a sleevelike structure that is generally vertically directed, andis connected to the nipple 10 by means of a curved elbow 15.

with a screw thread and extending across the said interior is a bridge plug 16 that serves as the upper wall of the valve chamber 13, separating the said valve chamber from the part of the interior open space that is above the said bridge plug 16. The said upper part 21 of the interior open space in the head 14 is in communication wi h and is virtually an extension of the passage 17 that extends through the elbow 15 and connects at the lower end With the nipple 10.
A .port 18 through the bridge plug 16 terminates on the lower face of the bridge plug in the form of a valve-seat 20.
The upper end of the opening 21 in the header sleeve 14 is closed by a solid cap 22.
The bottom wall of the valve chamber 13 is formed by an annular guide plug 23 that has an opening 19 that is below the valve-seat 20 and is of suitable size and form to serve as a guide for the valve 24.
The valve 24 is of cylindrical form and is adapted to cooperate with the valve seat 20.
An arm 25 extends to one side from the head 14, on the side remote from the elbow 15, and has a vertically directed openin 26 that serves as a guide for the float rod 27 that extends therethrough. I On the inner side of the elbow 15 is an integral lug 28 that serves as the support for the pivoted end of the valve lever 29, the connection being provided by means of a pin or screw 30. I
The said valve lever 29 extends through the downwardly directed and slotted valve stem 31 so as to be adapted to open and close the valve 24 by downward and upward movements and has the outer and free end 32 pivotally connected by means of the pin 33 with the lower end of the fioat rod 27, the said outer end 32 being substantially in vertical alignment with and below the guide passage 26 in the arm 25.
The float rod 27 extends from the lower end 34 upwardly through the guide passage 26 and above the valve structure, has the upper end 35 screw threaded for a positioning and stop nut 36, and has slidably mounted on the intermediate, body portion 37 the float 38, which has an axial opening 39 that is a loose fit for the rod 27.
As shown, the float 38 is of cylindrical form with flat ends 40.
The head 14 has one or more openings 41 in the side wall that serve to connect the valve chamber 13 with the open. space of the tank.
In the structure described, the valve 2 closes by an upward movement, corresponding to an upward movement 01': the float 38.
It will be noted, however, that the valve will remain fully open until the float contacts with the nut 36, a condition that is reached only after the tank has filled nearly to the full extent desired and for which the parts have been adjusted. Then a slight further filling of the tank will siiiffice 'lor eiiecting the closing of the valve.
In the modification shown in Fig. elbow 1 5 is omitted; the head 14: is connected directly to the nipple the valve 2 L is operative to close by a downward movement and has an upwardly directed stem 31 the valve lever 29 has one end operatively connected to the said valve stem 31., is tulcrumed on a pin 30 adjacent the middle, and has the other end 82 connected by means of a pin 33 to the float rod 37; and the supporting arm 29 that supports the valve lever 525 is below the saidvalve lever 29.
Accordingly, the lower end portion of the float rod 37 that extends through the guide passage 26 is in the form of a downward extension ll of the rod body 37 below the pivrod, a stop device at the upper end of the,
said rod, and a float slidably mounted on the portion of the said rod adjacent to and below the said stop device.
2. A ball cock as described in claim 1, the said float'being of cylindrical form, with a flat bottom or end.
