Application filed May 16, 1921.
7 '0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CONRAD STEHL, va citizen of the United States, residing at Oakland, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pencils, ofwhich the following is a specification.
My invention is an improved refillable pencil, simple in construction and operation and cheap to manufacture.
Referring to the annexed drawing" in which my invention is illustrated and which forms a part of this specification:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my pencil.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal section of my pencil.
Figure 3 is a longitudinal section of the rotatable sleeve with the slotted side of the lead tube therein shown in elevation.
Figure 4 is a side view of the nut for advancing the lead.
Figure 5 is an end view of said nut.
In the drawing 1 indicates a pencil handle formed with a reduced end portion 2 on which fits the upper end of a tube 3. The tube 3 has a partition 4, near its upper end, which engages the end of the reduced portion 2 of the handle and an internal thread 5 is out in said tube from its lower end nearly up to the partition 4, which thread;
is engaged by a nut 6. The nut 6 is provided with an axial bore 7 and a lug 8 is formed in the nut extending radially into said bore.
'11 fits on the reduced portion 9 of tube 3 with its upper end engaging the shoulder 10. A partition 12 extends across the sleeve 11 and engages the lower end of tube 3 while the upper end of the tube engages the shoulder 10. The lower end portion 13 of the sleeve 11 is conical, tapering downwardly.
A lead tube 14 extends axially within the sleeve 11 and is secured in the lower end of the sleeve, the partition 12 being provided with a central aperture 15 through which said lead tube extends, whereby said tube is prevented from being bent outv of axial relation to the sleeve. The lead tube'14 has a longitudinal slot 16 and extends through the bore 7 of the nut 6 whilethe lug 8 extends through said slot, into the tube against the upper end of the lead 17 1n the tube.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 16, 1922.
Serial No. 470,196.
The upper end of the tube has a longitudinal slit 18 enlarged at its lower end whereby the upper end of said tube is caused to contract tightly around the reduced portion 2 and hold the tube securely on the pencil handle.
The upper end of the sleeve has a longitudinal slit 19 which is enlarged at its lower end whereby the upper end of the sleeve contracts upon the tube 3 and holds said sleeve on the tubeby friction, but allows the sleeve to be-turned on the tube.
When the sleeve 11 isturned in one direction the'nut 6 and its lug 8 are moved upwardly so that a new lead 17 may be placed in the tube 14. lVhen the sleeve 11 is turned 1n the opposite direction the nut- 6 and its lug 8 are moved downwardly and the lug 8 engagingthe upper end of the lead projects its lower end beyond the lowerend of the sleeve 11 in position to write.
Having described my invention, 1 claim:
L-In a refillable pencil, a tube threaded internally upwardly from its lower end, a nut engaging the internal thread of--- said tube, said nut having an axial bore, a lug on said nut extending into said bore, a sleeve turnably mounted on said tube, a lead tube extending axially within said sleeve and through the bore of said nut and secured in the lower end of said sleeve, said lead tube having a longitudinal slot into which said lug extends above the upper end of the lead in said lead tube, said sleeve being split at its upper end to cause it to engage said first tube with sufiicient friction to hold onto said tube.
2. In a refillable pencil, a tube threaded internally from its lower end upwardly and formedwith a reduced portion, extending from its lower end, and with an annular external shoulderat the upper end of said reduced portion, a nut in said tube engaging its internal thread, said nut/having an axial bore,
a lug on said nut extending into its bore, a
rotatable sleeve mounted on the reduced portion of said tube with its upper end engagin said annular shoulder, a lead tube in sai sleeve secured in the lower end of said sleeve and extending through the bore of said nut, said lead tube being provided with a longi-. tudinal slot into which said lug extends over the upper end ofthe lead in said lead tube. In testimony whereof I afiix my si' nature; CONRAD ST HL.
