TACK MACHINE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD O. STARKA, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tack Machines,-
of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in tack machines and moreparticularly to mechanism. for feeding the material into such machines, the object of the present invention being to provide a simple, durable, and eliicient construction for this purpose, the present invention being an improvement over the construction illustrated and described in my prior application, Serial No. 392,369, filed June 28, 1920.

The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which,

The preferred form of construction. as illustrated in the drawings comprises the usual. guide tube or spindle 5 for guiding the strip of material from which the tacks are cut into the machine. The guide 5 is equipped with the usual feed rollers mounted on shafts 6 which are operatively connected at their opposite ends by means of the gears 7 and 8, as shown. One of the gears 8 on one side of the guide member 5 meshes with the larger gear 9 mounted on a.

is bolted to a bracket 19 securedby bolts 20 to the frame of the machine. The cam groove 17 extends from the extreme upper to the extreme lower portion of the cam ring 18 and is provided at each end with an inclined offset portion 21. An adjustable cam block 22 is secured to the ring 18 at each end of the cam groove 17 and is provided with a groove or notch 23 co-operating with the inchned portion 21 of cam groove 17. Each of thecam blocks 22 is adjustably secured in position'by means of screws 24: engaging through slots therein, as indicated, and a set screw 25 is provided for adjusting the position of each cam block. a
The arrangementis such that as the guide 5 oscillates in the usual way through an angle of 180 degrees, or one-halfof a revolution at the end of each oscillation, the headed stud. 16 runs into the corresponding inclined portion 21 of cam groove 17 and is oscillated rearwardly thereby. This. rearward oscillation of the stud 16causes corresponding movement of the fork 12 and reverse movement of the pawl 14; thus operat ing the ratchet 11 to cause corresponding operation of the feed rollers as will be readily understood. 'Thus at the end of each oscillationthe feed rollers will be operated to feed a corresponding length of strip into the machine. By adjusting the cam blocks 22 the' extent of this feed can be varied as desired. The arrangement set forth constitutes a simple and eflicient one for the purpose.
WVhile I have illustrated and described the preferred form. of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of the construction set forth, but desire to avail my self of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is
1. A tack machine comprising an oscillatory guide; feeding means on said guide; a cam member; and means, attached to said cam member and adapted to be oscillated thereby for operating said feeding means, substantially as described.
2. A tack machine comprising an oscillatory guide; feeding means on said guide;
a stationary cam member surrounding said guide; and means attached to said cam member and adapted to be oscillated thereby, for operating said feeding means, substantially as described.
3. A track machine comprising an oscillatory guide; feeding means on said guide; a stationary cam member surrounding said guide; and means, attached to said cam memher and adapted to be oscillated thereby at the end of each oscillation, for operating said feeding means, substantially as described.
4. A track machine comprising an oscillatory guide; feeding means on said guide; a stationary cam member; and means, op- 'erable' by said cam member, at the end of each oscillation, for operating said feeding means, substantially as described.
5. A tack machine comprising an oscillatory guide; feeding means on said guide; a cam member surrounding said guide and provided with a cam groove; and means oscillated by engagement with said groove for operating said feeding means, substantially as described.
6. A tack machine comprising an oscillatory guide; feeding means on said guide; a stationary cam member spaced from and surrounding said guide and provided with a cam groove having inclined portions on said cam groove, for operating said feeding means, substantially as described.
7. A tack machine comprising an oscillatory guide; feed rollers for feeding a strip through said guide; gears connecting and operating said feed rollers; a gear meshing thereof; and a headed stud on said oscillatory member operating in said cam groove, substantially as described.
8. A tack machine comprising an oscillatory guide; feed rollers for feeding a strip through said guide; gears connecting and operating said feed rollers; a gear meshing with one of said first mentioned gears; a
ratchet wheel operatively connected with said second mentioned gear; an oscillatory member carrying a pawl in operative connect-ion with said ratchet wheel; a stationary cam member surrounding said guide member and provided with a cam groove having an inclined portion at each end thereof; a headed stud on said oscillatory member operating in said cam groove; and adjustable cam blocks at each end of said cam groove, said blocks being provided with inclined grooves cooperating with the inclined portions of said cam groove, substantially as described.
