T all whom it'may concern:
Be it known that I, HARLEY T. PEoK, a residing at of Warren and State Lebanon,in the county and use-- of Ohio, have invented certain new ful Improvements in Primers of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a priming composition for ammunition and has for its object the provision of a substance'of the, class named which shall tion and efiicieney.

I which may position of material described in the followand it is more particularly pointed out. in the appended claims.
A priming composition made according to the present invention has pronounced qualities of sensitiveness, freedom from fouling improved qualities of ignition with propellants, and increased uniformity of all ballistic qualities. Itwill function in a more than priming compositions heretofore known and is more independent of variations exist within the primer or cartridge in which it is used.
In a center-fire .or rim-fire primer made according to one embodiment of the present invention the combination of substances used to produce a primer of improved sensitiveness contains a .sulpho-cyanate, tri-nitro-resorci- .nol, an oxidizing aagreipt and normal lead trion these substances are there is a slight but comnitro-resorcinol. mlxed together plicated chemical re-action which I consider responsible for the improved properties described above. The following proportions are given by way of example of a composi substances: 5% by weight of.tri-nitro-resorcinol. 5% byweight of lead sulpho-cyanate.
40% by weight of normal lead tri-nitroresorcinol.
50% by weight of .The proportions of potassium chlorate. the materials may or some purposes the following proportions maybeused: Y
15%by weight of tri-nitro-resorcinol.
20% by weight of lead sulpho-cyanate.
15% by weight of normal lead tri-nitrdresoroinol.
50 by weight of potassium chlorate.

Y cinolaj- Patented May 16, 1922 Serial 110 486323.
Fors'ome cartridges where a lesser force and heat of explosion is required, I may use the composition of tri-nltro-resorcinol, a
sulp-ho-cyanate and an oxidizing agent. For certain purposes and with certain propellant powders, these three substances are in them selves, when of satisfactory purity and properly mixed, a sition. tion is given below:
16% tri-nitro-resorcinol.
32% lead sulpho-cyanate.
752% potassium chlorate. v
Rim-firev cartridges in general require v a somewhat difi'erent type of composition from center-fire, and for'such cartridges an abrasive substance, such as ground glass,
emery or ferro-silicon maybe added to the composition. A suitable composition for rim-fire cartridges may contain:
30% normal lead tri-nitro-resorcinol.
10% lead sulpho-cyanate. i 10% tri-nitro-resorcinol.
20% potassium chlorate.-
, 30% ground glass.
Instead of a sulpho-c'yanate I may use anpther fuel such as antimony sulphide.
other suitable cyana'te', such as copper sulpho-cyanate may be substituted.
Instead of potassium chlorateanother oxidizing agent such as potassium perchlorate, barium nitrate, barium peroxide or other oxidizing substances, maybe used. 1
Instead of normal lead t "-nitro-resorcinol other suitable detonating explosives, such as di-plumbic di-tri-nitro resorcinol, one 0 organic diazo compounds or' mercury minate, or such as.tri-nitro toluene, tri-nitronitraanilid or tri-nitro methyl nitra-anilid may ful- I be used.
The priming compositions of the present invention may be mixed and introduced into the primer cup or rim-fire shell in the usual manners well known to those sln'lled-in the be are I claim 1. A priming composition containing trinitro-resorcinol, a sulpho-cyanate, an oxidizdetonating explosive.
priming com osition containing trinitro-resorcinol, a su pho-cyanate, an oxidizing agent and normal lead tri-nitro-resor-- suitable priming compo- One example of such a, compost place of lead sulpho-cyanat/e some some detonating nitro compound 3. A priming composition containing trinitro-resorcinol, lead sulpho-cyanate, an oxidizing agent and normal lead tri-nitro-resorcinol.
4'. A primin composition containing trinitro-resorcinofi a sulpho-cyanate, potassium chlorate and normal lead tri-nitro resorcinol.
5. A priming composition containing trinitro-resorcinol, lead sulpho-cyanate, potassium chlorate and normal lead tri-nitro-resorcinol.
6. A priming composition containing trinitro-resorcinol; lead sulpho-cyanate, "potassium chlorate,'normal lead tri-nitro-resorcii101 and an abrasive substance.
7. A priming composition containing trinitro-resorcinol, a sulpho-cyanate and an oxidizing agent.
8. -A priming composition containing trinitro-resorcinol, lead sulpho-cyanate, and potassium chlorate.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification on this fifth day of July, A. D. 1921.
