Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed .Tune 11, 1920. Serial No. 388,392.
useful Lens, of which the following is a specification.
The device forming the subject matter of this application is a lens, adapted to be used in the making of signs of that sort which is illuminated from the rear.
The invention aims to improve the construction of the lens generally and, particularly, to improve the means vhereby the lens is connected with the plate which carries the lens and constitutes a part of the light boX.
V'Vith the above and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that, within the scope of what is claimed, changes in the precise embodiment of the invention shown can be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 shows in front elevation, a lens constructed in accordance with the invention; Figure 2 is a rear elevation of the lens; Figure 3' is a side elevation wherein the lens and plate are shown, Figure lis a rear elevation showing the lens and tae plate, the parts being disposed as they will appear whilst the lens is being inserted through the opening in the plate; Figure 5 is a side elevation, parts being broken away, the vie; depicting the lens as it will appear whilst i is being inserted through the opening in th plate; Figure 6 a diagrammatic view illustrating the relations existing between the opening in the plate and sundry parts of the lens; and Figure 7 is a fragmental sectional detail illustrating the relation e: isting between one of the lugs on the lens, and the plate.
The lens forming the subject matter of this application preferably is made of glass and is of tubular form' the lens comprising a body 1 having a rearwardly extended reduced neck 2 defining a shoulder 3, the
neck being circular in cross section. The neck 2- is reduced in diameter as indicated at 4', and terminates in a tapered part 5. In the end of the part 5 of the neck there is a groove 6 which may be lined with quick silver, as indicated at '7 for the purpose of reflecting the light forwardly. A crescent shaped fin 8 projects from the neck 2, parallcl to the shoulder 3. Lugs 9 project from the neck 2 and are disposed approximately opposite to the ends of the crescent shaped fin 8, the lugs having slanting. outer surfaces 29. I
The numeral 10 marks a plate, adapted to constitute a part of a light box or the like,
the plate having a circular opening ll conforming in diameter to the diameter of the neck 2.
In practical operation, the lens is tilted, as shown in Figure 5, and the neck 2 is inserted through the opening ll in the plate 10, the fin 8 passing behind the plate. The lens is then swung in the direction of the arrow A in Figure 5. The slanting surfaces 29 of the lugs 9 first distort the plate 10, as indicated at 50 in Figure l. The lugs 9 ultimately pass through the opening 11 and then the material of the plate, which was distorted asindicated at 50 springs back into alinement with the remaining portions of the plate, as indicated in F igure 7. It will be seen. that the lens is now held by the lugs 9 and the (in 8 in the opening ll of the plate 10. A Having thus described the invention what is claimed is i- A sign-forming element co o is body havin a reduced neck defi der, the neck being prof -ded standing crescent-shaped fin dis; allelto the shoulder and bein eouinped with outstanding lugs dispos d abprd mately opposite to the ends of thelini those surfaces of the lugs which are remote from the shoulder slanting toward the nez-k.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own,I have hereto aflixed my signa ture in the presence of two witnesses.
