WATER-GAUGE COLUMN.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, JAMES G. BLUNT, of Schenectady, in the county of Schenectady and State of New York, and HARRY SwoYER, of Dunkirk, in the county of Chautauqua and State of New York, have jointly invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Water-Gauge Columns, of which improvement the following is a specification.
)ur invention relates to columns for supporting the water glasses and gauge cocks of steam boilers, and its object is to provide an appliance which shall beof simple constructlon and ample strength to avoid liability to fracture under pressure, and which shall further, afford improved facilities for carrying off the waste water from the gauge cocks and water glasses, Without scattering it.
The improvement claimed is hereinafter fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawing: Figure 1 is a view, in elevation, of a water column and its accessories, embodying our invention, connected, in operative relation, to a Fig. 2, a partial longitudinal central section, taken at a right angle to Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a horizontal section, on an enlarged scale, on the line a a of Fig. 2; lg. 4, a longitudinal central section, on an enlarged scale; and, Figs. 5 and 6, similar sections, illustrating modifications of structural detail.
In the practice of our invention, referring descripti ely to the specific embodi ment thereof hich is herein exemplified, we provide a cylindrical body, 1, which is formed of a straight piece of rolled pipe or tubing, to the ends of which, upper and lower connection castings, 1, 1", are secured by screw threads. The upper connection casting, 1, is connected, by a steam supply pipe, 2, and cou ling nuts, 2, 2 to the shell of a steam boi er, A, at a suitable height above the normal water level therein, and the lower connection casting, 1", is connected by a water supply pipe, 3, and coupling nut, 3, to the shell of the boiler, at a proper distance below the normal water level.
Gauge cocks, 45, in this instance three in number, are connected to the water column,
1, being, as in ordinary practice, spaced at such distances above the crown sheet of the boiler, as to indicate, when opened, the variations of level of the water in the boiler,

-shown in Fig. 3, and partly of cylindrical section in line axially with the body 1. 'The dripper is connected, at its lower end, to a discharge pipe, 7, and is adjustablyv secured to the lower connection casting, l", by a clamping bolt, 6*, fitting in a circumferential groove or recess, 1, in the lower connection casting, and having a nut, 6", by which nut, jaws, 6, on the dripper, through which jaws the bolt, 6*, passes, may be drawn tightly together, so as to hold the dripper in any desired and circumferential adjusted position relatively to the axial line of the body.
In themodification of structural detail shown in Fig. 5, the body is swaged down at its ends, and external screw threads are cut thereon, which engage corresponding internal threads on the upper and lower connection castings. The body may, if preferred, be of uniform diameter throughout with external screw threads on its ends, for engagement with the connection castings, as shown in Fig. 6.
It will be seen that the appliance above described, combines lightness with ample strengthto guard against fracture by pressure strains, the consequences of which are often disastrous to operators of steam boilers, and that the connection of the gauge cocks and water gauge glass to the column may be readily and securely effected. A further feature of practical advantage is presented in the provision of a dripper which may be circumferentially adjusted and held in any desired position, and is of such constructlon and capacity as to be capable of carrying off all waste water discharged, without scattering it on the engineer or fireman.
We claim as our invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. The combination of a water gauge column; upper and lower connection castings, secured to the ends of said body; a plurality of gauge cocks, secured to said body,
intermediate of its ends; and a circumferentially adjustable dripper, connected to the lower connection casting.
2.
