Be itknown that I, JAMES N. BROWN, acitizen of the` United States, and a resident oflDes Moines, inthe `county of Polk and State of Iowa, have invented a certain new and useful Latch, of which the following is a specification.
1 The object of my and the like and particularly screen doors of very simple and inexpensive construction.
.More particularly, it is my object to provide a, latch having members adapted to be mounted respectively upon fixed support and a screen door and of such construction that when the closure member is swung to one position of its movement, the latch memengage for holding the closure member in its position then assumed.
A further object tion with said latch a locking or holding member mounted in a peculiar manner upon one ofthe latch elements. With these and other objects in view, my invention consists in the construction, arrangement and combination of the various parts of my device, whereby the objects con-` as hereinafter more templated are attained, fully set forth, pointed out in my claim, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:

In Figure f1, I have shown a plan of the pattern for the second latch member. The pattern consists of a strip A, as shown. The strip A is folded on its transverse medial line B, forming two` portions 16 parallel with and superimposed upon each other, as
in Figure 2. VThe `pattern has slightly spaced ears 17 on opposite sides ofthe line B, which when the latch is formed, are bent in opposite directions from the members 1G to form ilanges, as shown in Figures 1 and 2, which may be secured "to the door jamb 10 by means of screws 18.
Near the free ends of the members 16, said members arecurved to form spaced inwardly opening channelshaped members 19, terminating in tongues 20, which are inclined outwardly and away from each other, as shown in Figure 2. The members 20 and 19 are designed to receive 'between them the portien 12 of the first atch member.`
The latch members 16 are preferably made of suitable resilient material and may be riveted together near the members 19, as by the rivet 21.
In Figure 4, the holes for said rivet are shown at`22 and23. The latch members 16 are provided near the line B with holes 24 and 25, which *register when the strip A is folded over to its position shown in Figure 2. v a t The members 16 are provided at points equi-distant from the line B with openings 26 and 27.
I provide a locking member, the pattern for which is shown in Figure 5, comprising a strip C. The strip C in completing the locking member is folded over along its transverse medial line D. The strip C then forms two parallel superimposed members 28.
On one edge of the strip C at opposite ends thereof are formed ears 29, which when the `members 28 are folded over on each other, are spaced apart slightly, so as to receive between them the members 16. The
ears 29 are provided with openings 30, which are arranged to register with the openings 22 like 31 may be inserted through the open'- ings 30, 22 and 23.
Spaced from one of the ears 29, there' is connected with one of the members28, a tongue orprojection 32', which when the locking member is mountedon thelatehmember by means of the rivet 31, has'an end 33 bent downwardly `and Ireceived iin `the openings26L and 27. Y
Adjacent tothe medial line D, the strip 28 .isfformed with a projecting portion 34, whichis `\/-shaped as at 35, at Vits outer end.

In another. of y its positions, the locking member stands with the member E projected between the members 19. and into `theI portion .12, -when such portion 12 is received betweenthe members 19, as illustratedfor instance in Figure 6.
It will be, seen that when my improved latch structure is mounted on the door jamb and the screen, vthescreen mayl be swung to closed-position, whereupon the member 12 will enter between-the imembers 20 and the members 19 and will be then held by the resiliency ofy the vmembers 20 in such position.
If the member E' should be in locking position when the member 12 enters between the members 19, `the member .12 will engage the bevelled.v edge F and force the locking member fromits full line position shown in Figure 1to its dotted line position. There-k ;after, if desired, the locking member may and 23', so that arivet or the be moved manually from its dotted line position illustrated in Figure 1 to its full line position in such figure.
It will be seen that my improved latch is of extremely simple and inexpensive construction. lt can be made of readily available material with relatively few processes vof manufacture.
It can be packed and stored in small spaces.
lt is obvious that the parts may be readily adapted for fastening the door in closed position, or that` by fastening one latch to the baclrof a door and the other to a wall or the like, the latch device may be used foriholding the door in open position.
Some changes may be made in the construction and .arrangement of the various parts 'of my improved latch device without departing from the real spirit and purpose of my invention, and it is my intention to cover by my claims, any modified forms of structure or use of mechanical equivalents, which may be reasonably included within their scope.
I claim as my invention:
In a door latch structure, a. latch member comprising a strip of resilient material folded over on itself and having in its parallel portions elongated registering openings, said portions forming lnear one end spaced engaging members curved toward each other and then from each other at their free ends, a coacting member having an enlarged hollow end adapted to be received between said engaging members, a locking element, a means arranged to pivot one end of the locking element to said first latch member andy securing together the portions ofthe first latch member, a member on said locking element overl-awning said first latch member having a portion projecting into said elongated openings for limiting the pivotal movement of the locking member, and means on the locking member for entering said hollow end for llockingr the latch members together.
