UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN. A. MONABB, or OLATHE, KANSAS.
IMPROVEMENT IN DOOR-CHECKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 141,577, dated August 5, 1873; application filed June 28, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN A. MONABB, of Olathe, in the county of Johnson and State of Kansas, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Door Bumpers and Catches; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a sectional view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a front view of the sliding bolt within its metal case. Fig. 3 is a front view of the bracket.
My invention relates to means for holding doors open, and preventing all rattling and slamming of the same by the wind or other cause; and consists in the novel construction and arrangement of a metallic gravitating-bolt sliding within a metallic case attached to a door, and arranged to engage with a catch at the end of a metallic bracket attached to a wall or partition, said open door striking and bein g held firmly against an India-rubber bumper fastened into the end of said bracket, all of which is hereinafter more fully described in the accompanying drawing.
The letter A represents the metallic case, secured to the door B by means of screws, within which is a smoothly-sliding bolt, 0. This bolt is vertically arranged, and its lower end is bent, extended outward, and indented, as shown at Z, to engage with a beveled catch, G, at the end of the bracket F, which is also secured, by screws or otherwise, to a wall or partition, K. The lower end of the 'case A is slotted at I for the passage and movement of the beak Z, and at its upper end the said sliding bolt (3 is provided with a thumb-piece, D, also moving in a slot, 1, in the case A, for the purpose of raising the bolt when it is desired to unfasten the open door. Fastened into a hole bored into the outer end of the bracket F, and directly under the catch G, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, is the bumper H, consisting of a piece of India, rubber fitted into said hole, and designed not only to prevent noise or shock by the violent opening or slamming of the door, but also to hold the open door firmly in its place against the catch, and thereby prevent any rattling that might take place from wind or any other cause.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of gravitating metallic bolt 0, the metallic case A, firmly attached to the door, and the metallic bracket-catch F Gr attached to a wall or partition, and provided with an India-rubber bumper fastened into the end of said bracket under the catch, all constructed and arranged substantiallyiu the manner and for the purposes hereinbefore shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
JOHN ANDREW MGNABB.
