To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN A. WHERRY, a citizen of the United States, residing in New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Typewriting" Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a collatingdevice for typewriting machines, and is in the nature of improvements which may be used with the device set forth in my prior Patent No. 1,351,081, granted August 31, 1920, and provides means whereby a plurality of worksheets may be readily assembled with carbon sheets and rapidly adjusted in position. For this purpose, the collating device, c0Inprising a collating table, is pivotally mounted on the carriage at the front of the platen, and is swingable from a normally vertical position to a horizontal position, in which latter position the various carbon-sheets and work-sheets may be more easily adjusted and assembled. The platen is carried by the col lating device, and is disconnected from the platen-rotating mechanism when the collatlng device is swung to horizontal position. When the work-sheets and carbon-sheets have been adjusted on the collating table, the device is swung back to vertical position, the platen being again connected to the iilaten-rotating mechanism. The carbonsheets are of a length sufiicient to extend from the rear of the platen to the upper part of the collating table, where the ends of the carbon-sheets are fixed in a clamp slidable lengthwise of the table. When the table is in a horizontal position, the clamp is slid upwardly on the collating table and the worksheets are inserted between the carbondevice is swung to vertical position at t e front of the platen to connect the laten to the platen-rotating mechanism, an the various sheets are drawn downwardly and rearwardly to the first line tobe typed. When. the work-sheets have been fully typed, the collating devlce is swung to horizontal osition, and the pro-. cess described above 1s repeated.
The carbon-sheets remain in the machine until worn out; Hitherto, these sheets have been short strips, which were removed from the machine when exhausted, and new sheets inserted. A feature of this invention is the provision of a mounting for carbon-strips wound upon rolls and supply carbon-sheets between which work-sheets may be readily interleaved. portions of the carbon-strips, to be used until worn out, whereupon fresh portions of the carbon-strips may be drawn from the rolls.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention applied to a typewriting machine, only the necessary co-operating elements of the machine beingshown, and the collating device being in position to permit the insertion and adjustment of work-sheets.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of an improved clamping means for the free ends of the carbon-sheets.
Figure 3 is a vertical section of the device shown in Figure 1, the collating device being shown in operative position after the worksheets have been adjusted thereon and ready for the typing operation.
Figure 4 is an end view, showing the parts substantially as in Figure 3, but prior to the insertion of the sheets around the platen.
Figure 5 is a section taken crosswise of the carbon-strips, showing the stepped arrangement of carbon-sheets near one edge of the collating table, to facilitate the insertion of the work-sheets between the carbon-sheets.
Figure 6 is a rear elevation of the device as shown in Figures 3 and 4:.
The collating device 10 comprises a collating table 11 fixed to side-rails 12, connected at their upper ends by a tie-bar 13, and supported near their lower ends on platen-axle or shaft 14 to either side of a platen 15 mounted on said axle. The platen is thus carried by the collating device, which is connected to platen-frame 20 by a linkage to be described hereinafter, and by a gear connection comprising a gear 21 fixed at each end of shaft 1 1 just outside of rails 12 and meshing with pinions 22 (Figures 3 and 6) supported upon shafts 23 in the end-walls 24 of the platen-frame. The gears 21. and hence the platen, are operated by rotating knobs or finger-wheels 25 fixed to shafts 26 journaled in theend-walls of the platenframe and carrying gears .27 at their inner ends meshing with pinions 22; so that rotation of gears 27 by the finger-wheels rotates pinions 22 and gears 21 to rotate the platen. The platen may be rotated also by the usual line-space mechanism, of which only the line-space handle 28 and ratchet-wheel 29, fixed to shaft 26, are shown.
It will be seen that gears 21 can be swung out of mesh with pinions 22, and hence break the gear connection with the platenframe. The collating device and the platen which it carries are connected to the carriage by links 30 pivoted at one end by means of a rock-shaft 36 on the side-rails 12 and at the other end at 37 to lugs 31 on the carriage,

the upper end thereof is swung upwardly and forwardlyuntil the collating device is maintained in a substantially vertical position, shown in Figures 3 and 4. In this position, gears 21 mesh with pinions 22, so that the platen-rotating mechanism is effective to rotate the platen, and the collating device is held firmly in position by the ends 40 of the side-rails .12 engaging in notches 41 in a connecting rod 42 (Figures 3 and 6), and by the forked ends 44 of members 45slidably mounted on the side-rails 12 engaging rod 42, the members 45 being actuated by means of a finger-piece 46.
The collating device, indicated generally by the numeral '10, carries carbon-rolls 47 supplying carbon-strips or sheets 48 which are fed from the rear around the platen, to
table 11, where work-sheets 49 are inserted between the carbon-sheets While the table is in the horizontal position. The ends of the carbon-sheets are then-clamped together and the table swung to vertical position to render the platen-rotating mechanism effective, and the carbon-sheets and Work-sheets are rotated rearwardly around the platen to the initlal printing position. For this purpose, the side edges 50 of table 11 act like rails along which slide blocks 51, which support a clamp 52, to bedescribed later. Belts 53, connected to blocks 51, pass over the ends of a roller. 54 mounted at the upper end of the table and around guide rollers 55, near the lower end of the table, and return to the starting point at the blocks 51 to which they are fixed. At points on the belts, opposite that to which the clamp is fixed, are mounted the carbon-rolls 47, having the carbon-sheets 48 wound thereon, which are fed around the platen to the table 11, The carbon-rolls are preferably mounted on short shafts 65 and 66 between flanges 67 and 68 fixed on said shafts, shafts 65 and 66 being forced into the ends of cores 69 of said rolls. The rolls may be rotatably mounted in brackets 60 fixed to the belts, said brackets being con nected by a bar 58 slidable upon guide-rails 59, the rolls being journaled in said bracle ets by short extensions of shafts 65 and 66, the shafts being laterally slidable in bearings fixed to the brackets 60 to permit shafts 65 to be withdrawn from bearings 70, so that fresh carbon-rolls may be mounted on the shafts. The rolls are normally held in their bearings by springs 71 fixed to one of the brackets 60 and pressing against the rolls, said springs also preventing unwinding of the carbon-rolls during the typmg operation. By holding the belts and rolls fixed and drawing on the carbon-sheets, new portions-may be withdrawn therefrom when the old portions have been worn out after repeated use.
The carbon-sheets are fed around the platen to the table 11, when the latter is in the horizontal position shown in Figure 1, and work-sheets are inserted between the clamped carbon-sheets, the right-hand edges of which may be stepped relatively to each other to facilitate insertion of the worksheets, Figures 1 and 5. The ends of the carbon-sheets are clamped in clamp 52 by impaling the sheets on pins 75 fixed to bar 76 of the clamp 52, said bar being supported in slides 51. The clam is closed by an upper hinge-member 77 liaving o enings 78, into which pins 75 project, said lingo-member catching beneath aspring-clip 7 9 on bar 7 6. The top sheet is held to the table-by springfingers 80, fixed to the upper hinge-member 77. During the insertion of the Work-sheets the clamp-member will be in the position shown in Figure 1, near the upper end of the collating table 11, so that the brackets 60, carrying the carbon-rolls 47. will be near the lower end of the table adjacent the guiderolls 55, and the length of the carbon-strip drawn oil the rolls is the distance from the rolls around the platen to the clamp 52.
The table is then swung to the vertical position shown in Figure 4, thus rendering the platen-rotating mechanism effective. ro-
tating the platen rearwardly, the carbonsheets and work-sheets are drawn rearwardly over an apron 81 (Figure 3) to the hereinafter described,- the clamp moving downwardly along the front of the table, and brackets 60 moving upwardly along the rear. The brackets 60 and carbon-rolls mounted thereon, act as counterweights to clamp 52 to prevent said clamp from exerting a downward force at the upward ends of the carbon-sheets and work-sheets. The sheets are brought to the initial printing position, after which they are fed upwardly in the usual manner. When the work-sheets have been typed, the carbons and worksheets are run up on the collating table to thegstarting position, as in Figure 1, the collating'device is swung to the horizontal position, and the typed work-sheets are withdrawn; new work-sheets are then inserted between the stepped carbon-sheets. The collating device is then swung to vertical position, the carbon-sheets and worksheets are drawn down to initial position, and the process, as described above, is repeated. It will be observed that the same carbon-sheets, or portions of the carbonrolls, are employed repeatedly until worn out, and then fresh portions may be drawn off the rolls by holding the rolls or belts in fixed position and drawing on the carbonsheets until the desired amount is withdrawn. While the carbons have been shown and described as wound upon separate rolls, it is apparent that several layers of carbons may be wound upon the same roll.
For guiding the carbon-sheets and worksheets around the platen, there is provided the apron 81, having an upward and rear ward extension forming a paper shelf 83. Springs 82 are connected to the upper end of said shelf and to the adjacent side-rails to hold feed rolls 84, fixed to the under side of the apron and projecting therethrough, in contact with the platen. To release the apron and rolls to permit the insertion of sheets from the front, links 86, pivoted to the shelf and the adjacent side-rails, are provided, and are operable to force the apron downwardly against the action of springs 82 by means of a handle 87 fixed to operating cams 88 and operating in slots 89 in links 86. The apron is supported also by rod 90, to the ends of which are fastened links 91 pivotedonside-rails, said links being adjustable lengthwise by means of locknuts 92 to vary the distance of the apron from the platen,
Variations may be resorted to within the scope of the invention, and portions of the improvements may be used without others.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. In a typewriting machine, in combination, a platen-frame having a platen journaled therein, a collating device mounted at the front of the platen and comprising a collating table, and a carbon-roll mounted for reciprocatory movement on said device, said roll supplying carbon-sheets to be fed around said platen to said collating table, said carbon-roll moving downwardly on said device as said sheets are fed around said platen and upwardly on said table.

In a typewriting machine, in combination, a platen-frame having a platen journaled therein, a collating device mounted at the front of the platen and comprising a collating table, and a carbon-roll mount ed for reciprocatory movement on said device, said roll supplying carbon-sheets to be fed around said platen to said collating table, said carbon-roll moving lengthwise of said device as said sheets are fed around said platen to said'collating table.

In a typewriting machine, in combination, a platen-frame having a platen journaled therein, a collating device mounted at the front of the platen and comprising a collating table, and carbon-rolls mounted for reciprocatory movement on said device,said rolls supplyin carbon-sheets to be fed around said pi aten to said collating table, said carbon-rolls moving downwardly on said device as said sheets are fed around said laten and upwardly on said table.

In a typewriting machine, in combination, a platen-frame, a collating device pivotally mounted on said frame and comprising a collating table, a platen movable with said device, a carbon-roll mounted for reciprocatory movement on said collating device, said carbon-roll supplying carbonsheets to be fed around said platen to said collating table, said carbon-roll moving downwardly on said device as said sheets are fed around said platen and upwardly on said table, and means for holding said carbon-roll against unwinding.
5. In a typewriting machine, in combination, a platen-frame, a collating device pivotally'mounted on said frame and comprising a collating table, a platen movable with said device, a carbon-roll mounted for reciprocatory movement on said collating device, said carbon-roll supplying carbonsheets to be fed around said platen to said collating table, said carbon-roll moving downwardly on said device as said sheets are fed around said platen and upwardly on said table, and friction means for holding said carbon-roll against unwinding, said friction means being overcome by drawing on said carbon-sheets when it is desired to withdraw a fresh carbon-sheet from said roll.

In a typewriting machine, in combination, a platen-frame, a collating device pivotally mounted on said frame and comprising a collating table, a platen movable with said device, carbon-rolls mounted for reciprocatory movement on said collating device at the rear thereof, said carbon-rolls supplying carbon-sheets to be fed around said platen to said collating table, said carbonrolls moving downwardly on said device as said sheets are fed around said platen and. upwardly on said table, and means for holding said carbon-rolls against unwinding.

In a typewriting machine, in combina tion, a platen-frame, a collating device pivotally mounted on said frame and comprising a collating table, a platen movable with said device, carbon-rolls mounted for reciprocatory movement on said collating device at the rear thereof, said carbon-rolls supplying carbon-sheets to be fed around said platen to said collating table, said carbon-rolls moving downwardly on said device as said sheets are fed around said platen and upwardly on said table, and friction means for holding each of said carbon-rolls against unwinding, said friction means being overcome by drawing on said carbonsheets when it is desired to withdraw fresh carbon-sheets from said rolls.

In a typewriting machine, in combination, a platen-frame having a platen journaled therein, a collating device mounted at the front of the platen and comprising a collating table, belts mounted on said collating device one at each side for movement lengthwise thereof, and a carbon-roll fixed to said belts and movable therewith, said carbon-roll supplying carbon-sheets to be fed around said platen to said collating table, said carbon-roll moving downwardly along said device as said sheets are fed around said platen and upwardly on said table.
9. In a typcwriting machine, in combination, a platen-frame having a platen journaled therein, a collating device mounted at the front of the platen and comprising a collating table, belts mounted on said collating device one at each side for movement lengthwise thereof, and carbon-rolls fixed to said belts and movable therewith, said carbon-rolls supplying carbon-sheets to be fed around said platen to said collating table, said carbon-rolls moving downwardly along said device as said sheets are fed around said platen and upwardly on said table.

In a typewriting machine. in combination, a platen-frame having a platen journaled therein, a collating device mounted at the front of the platen and comprising a collating table, belts mounted on said collating device one at each side for movement lengthwise thereof, a carbon-roll fixed to said belts and movable therewith, and a clamp fixed to said belts and movable therewith'along said collating table, said clamp and carbon-roll moving in opposite directions, said carbon-roll supplying carbonsheets to be fed around said platen to said collating table, the front ends of said can bon-sheets being held by said clamp. said carbon-roll moving downwardly along said device as said sheets and clamp move upwardly on said collating table.

In a typewriting machine, in combination, a platen-frame having a platen journaled therein, a collating device mount ed at the front of the platen and comprising a collating table, belts mounted on said collating device one at each side for movement lengthwise thereof, said belts having front and rear portions movable in opposite directions, a carbon-roll fixed at the rear of said collating device to the rear of said belts and movable therewith, and a clamp fixed to said belts at the front thereof and movable therewith, said clamp and carbon-roll moving in opposite directions, said carbon-roll supplying carbon-sheets to be fed around said platen to said collating table, the front ends of said carbon-sheets being held by said clamp, said carbon-roll moving downwardly along said device as said sheets and clamp move upwardly on said collating table.

In a typewriting machine, in combination, a platen-frame having a platen journaled therein, a collating device mounted at the front of the platen and comprising a collating table, belts mounted on said col lating device one at each side for movement lengthwise thereof, brackets fixed to said belts at the rear thereof and movable therewith, carbon-rolls mounted in said brackets at the rear of the collating device, said carbOIl-IOllS supplying carbon-sheets to be fed around said platen to said collating table, and a clamp fixed to said belts at the front thereof and movable therewith along said collating table, the front ends of said carbon-sheets being held by said clamp, said brackets and carbon-rolls moving downwardly along said device as said sheets and clamp move upwardly on said collating table.

In a typewriting machine, in combi nation, a platen-frame having a platen journaled therein, a collating device mounted at the front of the platen and comprising a collating table, belts mounted on said collating device one at each side for movement lengthwise thereof, brackets fixed to said belts at the rear thereof and movable therewith, carbon-rolls mounted in said brackets at the rear of the collating device, said carbon-rolls supplying carbon-sheets to be fed around said platen to said collating table, a clamp fixed to said belts at the front thereof and movable therewith along said collating-table, the front ends of said carbonsheets being held by said clamp, said brackets and carbon-rolls moving downwardly along said device as said sheets and clamp move upwardly on said collating table, and a friction connection between said brackets and said carbon-rolls for holding said rolls against unwinding.

In a typewriting machine, in combination, a platen-frame having a platen journaled therein, a collating device mounted at the front of the platen and comprising a collating table, belts mounted on said collating device one at each side for movement lengthwise thereof, brackets fixed to said belts at the rear thereof and movable clamp move upwardly on sail collating 111m
