IMPROVEMENT IN SMOKE-BURNING FURNACES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 141,574., dated August 5, 1873 application filed April 21, 1873.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, CORNELIUS MQGIN- NISS and WILLIAM NAYLOR, of Chicago, in the county of (look and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Smoke-Burning Furnaces, of which the following is a specification:
In the drawings, Figure 1, Sheet 1, is a front elevation of a boiler-furnace provided with our invention. Fig. 2, same sheet, a transverse section thereof, showing bridgewall both in elevation and section. Fig. 3, Sheet 2, is a longitudinal sectional elevationof the furnace. as improved by us; Fig. 4, a side view of the deflector; Fig. 5, a broken plane view of the grate-bars.
A A represent the case of an ordinary steam-boiler furnace, and is a smoke-stack or draft-flue of the ordinary construction, and B is the boiler, placed therein in the usual manner. The bridge-wall is shown at M, and it consists of walls placed transversely to the boiler B, and such a distance apart as to form a hot-air chamber between them. The
* air enters ports 0 and passes out orifices R in the curved part at the upper back side of the said wall at such an inclination that it will readily communicate with the flame passing under deflector O and over thetop of the bridge-wall M, as shown by darts m. Slides may be used to admit more or less air into the ports 0. The entire length of the wall M being perforated, the air passing through it comes into contact with the whole width of the sheet of flame from the fire-box. 0 represents a deflector, which is made of tirebrick, and laid round the under periphery of the boiler B, and at about the angle shown, and its lower edge is arched over to concentrate the heat at the middle of the furnace.
By means of this arrangement and construction the flame rises first in the direction of dart m, and is then turned down by the deflector (J toward the burning fuel on grate P, at which place a large amount of the products of first combustion are reburned. The products of combustion arising from the fuel farther back on the grate P is reburned at the top of bridge-wall M, so that in all ordinary fire-boxes the smoke is nearly all reburned; but in larger fire-boxes or furnaces a second or third deflector may be used in the rear of the bridge-wall M to secure a perfect combustion.
To secure at all times such an amount of air at the mouth of the fire-box as may be necessary to secure combustion, we use the following devices: Ports D D are made in the front end of the fire-box, and doors E are hinged to them at g, Fig. 3, so that they may be opened and closed by means of lifters, F, which are fastened to a rod, G, turning in bearings I. This rod is operated by means of levers S fastened to it, and the levers are held in fixed positions by means of springcatches a H K and racks J, the latter being fastened to the front of the boiler. To adjust the doors E the catches a a are carried back from the racks J by bringing the upper ends H toward the levers S, after which the levers can be swung to or from the front of the firebox, so as to give the doors E a greater or less angle by means of levers F, as may be desired.
The grate-bars P are made of iron, and one side of each bar is recessed out, and provided with a suitable number of projections, a a, &o., to bear against the adjoining bar, so that when the grate is in position it cannot warp, and so that the current of air from beneath will not meet with any considerable obstruction in its upward passage, as it does when transverse bridges are employed to strengthen the grate.
We are aware that adjustable draft-doors have been used below the grates, and that deflectors have also been used in other forms than ours; but the using of the feed-door to admit air directly to the surface of the burning fuel and in front of the thin-edged deflector to burn the smoke, first between the door and deflector, and then reburn it imme diately back of the deflector, we claim to be new in arrangement, and to consume (by practical use) all the products of combustion but the yellow smoke. Doors hung below the grate are useless for this purpose, and the air comingthrough them only drives the smoke out at the stack without burning the soot. The third point for burning the smoke is at the bridge-wall M, and the inclination at its top is formed to operate superior to a wall 2 E4ILL5741 with a flat top with projecting jets, While in forth, and combined with the deflector 0 and this case the heat is intensified at the bridgebridge-wall M, substantially as described, and
