To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Gus'rav Scnwon- ETZKY, residing at Eplingen-on-the-Neckar, \Vurttemberg, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Portable Fire Extinguishers, (for which I have filed application in Germany Dec. 18, 1920,) of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to portable fireextinguishers and consists of a stay belt which connects the top and the bottom of the shell or container and thus stiffens the Whole structure, and which is preferably made tubular so that it may at the name time serve as a receptacle for the pressure medium. In this caseit may, for instance, be passed through the bottom of the shell and be screwed into the guide for the push-pin provided in the top of the shell for releasing the pressure medium. Other objects of the invention will appear from the detailed. description of the improvement, which c011- sistsin the features of construction and corn bination of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The accompanying drawing shows one construction of the improved fire-extinguisher by way of example, inlongitudinal section.
Referring to the drawing a. is the shell of the fire-extinguisher and. p the stay bolt or rod. which connects the top and. bottom end plates and at the same time serves as a receptacle for the pressure medium. After the liquid for extinguishing the lire has been poured into the shell through the opening 7 in the bottom, which latter is adapted to serve as a funnel, the stay rod or receptacle is introduced through the charging opening I and its upper end is screwed. tightly into the guide bushing h of the sliding release pin 9 provided in the top of the, extinguisher. This construction has the advantage that the bolt or receptacle p cannot be forcibly ejected from the extinguisher in case it should be unscrewed while the shell is ac cidentally still under pressure, in as much as the tight seal at the bottom is broken as soon as the unscrewing of the bolt or receptacle commences and all the compressed gas freely escapes around the bolt long before the bolt is entirely released from the guide bushing at the top. A further advantage of this construction, in which the stay bolt also serves as a receptacle for the pressure producing medium, is that the head Z) or the bolt pis always visible from the outside of the shell so that the insertion ofthe pressure receptacle cannot possibly be accirlentally overlooked, as happens sometimes with. can tinguishers of other constructions.
It will be obvious that the details of construction. of this improved extinguisher may be modified in many ways within the limit of the claims without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of its ad vantages and that the construction illus trated must be considered an example only.
In operation the release pin 9 is actuated to free the pressure medium contained in the hollow body 39 which pressure medium then functions to expel the ire eI-Itinp'uishc fluid contained in the shell a. The fire err-- tinguishin g fluid is expelled through the discharge pipe adjacent one side of the shell or.
lVhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:
1. In a portable fire extinguisher, a shell containing the extinguisher liquid, end plates secured to said. shell, one of said end plates being formed with a charging; open ing, a hollow stay bolt inserted through said charging o ening for connecting said end plates, means on said stay bolt for sealing said charging opening, said bolt being adapted to conlinethe pressure medium until the device is operated, and a discharge pipe for the extinguishing liquid.
2. The combination in. a portable fire e tinguisher of a shell. containing the extinguishing liquid, end plates for said shell, a tubular bolt ins-sortable through one of said end plates for connecting); said. end plates and reinforcing said shell, one of said end plates being formed with a charging opening, means on said bolt for closing: said charging opening and a head for said bolt disposed outside one of said end plates, said tubular bolt being adapted to confine the pressure medium until the device is operated and a discharge pipe for the extinguishing liquid.
3. The combination in a portable fire ex tinguisher of a shell containing the extinguishing liquid, end plates for said shell, a tubular stay belt for connecting said end tubular bolt serew-threadedly engaging the bushing of said pressure release pin, said tubular bolt being adapted to retain the pres- 10 sure medium.
