Description
W. S.I LAWRENCE.
Hemp-Brakes. N0. 141,569, Patented August5,1873.4
Hg. l.
INVENTOR. I WTA/WM NITED STATES WILLIAM S. LAWRENCE, OF WINCHESTER, KENTUCKY.
IMPROVEMENT IN HEMvP-BRAKES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 141,569, dated August 5, 1873; application filed April 26, 1873.
To all 'whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WM. S. LAWRENCE, of Winchester, in the county of Clarke and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and valuable Improvement -in Hemp-Brakes; and I do hereby declare that the following vis a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawings is a representation of a top view of my improved hemp-brake. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of the same, exhibiting the working parts. Fig. 3 is an end view of a reel forming a part of the brake.
My invention relates to certain improvements on a hemp-braking machine for which I obtained Letters Patent April 9, 1872, No. 125,466, as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In lthe drawings, A represents the fundamental part of the frame, to which are attached the uprights B B, connected by horizontal braces C C and diagonal braces D D. Power is transmitted, with the yaid of the universal coupling E, to the main shaft F, which is provided with a double crank, Gr, crankplate H, and crank-pin h, the double crank and the crank-pin being in diametricalIy-opposite positions. A pitman, i, connects the double crank G with a walking-beam, I, which is connected, through another pitrnan, i', with the head 7c of the brake K. The wrist-pin his connected, through the pitman l, to the walking-beam L, which extends its connection to the head m of brake lVI, through the pitman l. The rock-shafts I and L of the walking-beams I and L have journal-boxes similarly constructed and located as those alreadypatented, with the only difference that I do not confine mysel to the use of spiral springs above and below the journal-boxes, sin ce I have found thatrubber is quite as effective. The shaft F is provided with a pulley, N, between the bearing fand double crank G, which, by means ofthe belts o and p and pulleys o and p', rotates the reels C O and I? P on the shafts Of and P. The whole machine rests on axles r i", which are supported by wheels It It, so it may be drawn to anyplace desired.
The lower brakes K and M are fastened to the frame A in the saine manner as they are in my patented machine above mentioned.
The operation of my machine is the saine, substantially, as that of my patented machine, the reels being used to wind up the broken hemp, to keep it clean.
Vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. rEhe combination of the double crank Gr, the pitman t', the walking-beam I, the pitman i', the brake K, the crank-plate H, the wristpin h, the pitman l, the walking-beam L, the pitman l', and the brake M, substantially as specified.
2. rlhe reels C O and P P, in combination with the operatingmechanism ofahemp-brake,
