RIDDLE.
Specicaton of Letters Patent.
Patented May 9, 1922.
Application filed September 13, 1920. Serial No. 409,804.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY O. MAGNUSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Riddles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in riddles for sifting'molders sand, and has for its general object to provide a riddle or sieve of cheaper construction and greater durability than the riddles or sieves heretofore used. 1
To this end the invention consists in the improved riddle having the novel structural features and advantages hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawing I have illustrated one practical and approved embodiment of my invention, wherein F ig. l is a top plan view;
Fig. 2 is a vertical diametric section; and
Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary vertical section.
Referring to the drawing, 5 designates as a whole the annular frame of the riddle which, in accordance with my invention, is made of a molded ber composition. A proximately the lower half of the wall of the frame 5 is made of increased thickness, preferably about twice the thickness of the upper portion; this widened lower portion being shown at 6. t
7 designates the reticulated bottom of the riddle, formed as usual of a coarse wire mesh screen, the upturned marginal portions 7 of which are, in the process of molding, embedded within the thickened lower portion 6 of the frame, whereby the reticulated bottom is very strongly secured and anchored in the frame itself.
In the common construction of melders riddles or sieves, the marginal portions of the bottom are usually secured to the frame by one or more external bands or hoops nailed to the frame and clamping the upturned marginal portion of the screen to the frame. These clamping bands frequently chorage for of the screen bottom. The frame 5 may be easily and cheaply manufactured from liber composition material by a simple molding and kitv affords a re-enforced ani the embedded marginal portion a operation, in which operation the marginal portion of the bottom is embedded, thereby simplifying the process of manufacture, reducing the number of parts, and `cheapening the construction as compared with the common and known construction of these riddles.
While I have shown the reticulated bottom as embedded in the material of the frame, it may, within the purview of the invention, be otherwise secured to the frame. The making of the frame as a molded ring is a feature of prime importance in the invention, since it greatly cheapens, simplies and strengthens the riddle as a whole.
I claim:
vl.l A molders riddle lar frame of molded ber composition, and a fiat reticulated bottom disposed above the plane of the lower edge of said frame and marginal portion em# having an upturned bedded in the lower portion of said frame.
2. A molders riddle comprising an annular frame of molded fiber composition having a thickened lower portion, andL a fiat reticulated bottom disposed above the plane of the lower edge of an upturned marginal portion embedded in,
comprising an annusaid frame and havingv and extending approximately the full height of, said thickened lower portion of the frame.
