Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 9, 1922.
Application filed. January 5, 1922. Serial No. 527,227.
To all whomrit may concern:
Be .itknown that I,
a citizen of the and resident of WVheeling, .county of 5 and State of WVest certain new and WILLIAM G. DISCHER, United States of America, Ohio, Virginia, have invented useful Improvements in Door Checks, of which the following is a specification. This invention it has for its primary object to prov relates .to door checks, and 'de a check of the air-cylinder, or pneumatic, type in which a retractile closing spring is employedexterior to the cylinder and is so dispos ed that the piston rod the cylinder is at no ing strains.
which operates in time subjected to bend- In prior structures of the type to which the present invention relates,
the closing spring has occupied a position at an angle to, or out of parallel with, the cylinder and the piston rod. ment results in Obviously, such arrangea lateral strain being 1mposed upon the piston rod, which strain becomes so conside to a wide open p frequently becomes rable as the door is swung osition that the rod not inbent, rendering the check wholly inoperative.
As hereinbefore indicated, it is the chief aim of the present invention to door check structure in which the position of the spring relative to the piston rod such that bending strains impose former upon the A. further object is provide a s d by the latter are eliminated.
to structurally improve and simplify generally door checks of the character referred to.
In describing the invention in detail, reference is herein had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation of the invention applied to a door;
Figure 2 is a tion, enlarged; a
similar view of the inven- Figure 3 is an end view of the cylinder showing the hinge and hook construction.
Referring to said drawings, 1 indicates a hollow cylinder, cable within said 2 a piston which is reciprocylinder, and 3 a piston rod which projects outward through the rear end of said cylinder.
Attached to the front end or head 4 of the cylinder 1, a a plate 6 which hinge which has by means of screws 5, is constitutes one leaf of a the opposite leaf 15 thereof when the spring 12 Formed lntegral with said eye-piece and disposed at right angles to thelatter is an arm 11 designed to have attached thereto one end-of a retractile coil spring 12 which has its opposite end attached to one of .two arms or lugs 18 and 14 carried by the cylinder-carried leaf 6 of the hinge. Said lugs, which are preferably formed integral with said hinge-leaf 6, are disposed vertically, one thereof extending upward and the other extending downward such distance that is attached thereto the latter will not engage the cylinder.
The eye-piece 10 is reversible so that the arm 11 thereof may be disposed either in upright position, as shown in Fig. 1, or in depending position, as shown in Fig. 2, thus making provision for mounting the spring in a position either overlying or underlying the cylinder, as may be preferred or as may opening, without any such lateral strain being imposed upon the piston rod as would tend in any way to either bend said rod or produce binding of the latter upon the cylinder.
What is claimed is- 1. A door check comprising a cylinder, a piston reciprocable within said cylinder, a rod attached to said piston and movable through the rear end of said cylinder, a bracket carried by the door, an eye-piece carried by said piston rod and having a vertical arm, said eye-piece being reversible for mounting upon said bracket with the arm thereof occupying either upstanding or depending position, a hinge carried by the front end of said cylinder and attached to the door casing, oppositely disposed lugs carried on said front end of the cylinder, and a re- I above and below the level of 2. A door check comprising a cylinder, a
piston reciproeable within said cylinder,-'a rod attached to said piston and movable through the rear end of said cylinder, a bracket carried by the door, an eye-piece carried by said piston rod and having a' vertical arm, said eyepiece being reversible for mounting upon said bracket with the arm thereofoccupying either upstanding or depending position, a hinge of leaf type having one leaf thereof rigidly mounted on the front end of the cylinder at right angles to the'axis of the latter and the opposite leaf mounted upon the door casing over the door, opposite vertically extending lugs carried on the front end of the cylinder and projecting the latter, and a 'retractile coil spring connecting one of said lugs to the arm of the eye-piece'ja nd disposed parallel to said cylinder} 3. A .door check comprising a cylinder, a
7 piston reciprocable'within' said cylinder, a rod attached to said piston and movable mounting upon pending position, a
through the rear end of saidcylinder, a bracket carried by the door, an eye-piece carried by said piston rod and having a vertical arm, saideye-piece being reversible for said bracket with the arm thereof occupying either upstanding or dev hinge of leaf type having one leaf thereof rigidly mounted on the front end of the cylinder at right angles to the axis of the latter and the opposite leaf mounted upon the door casing over the door, lugs formed on that leaf of the hinge which is carried by the cylinder, said lugs being oppositely disposed and projecting above and below the levelof said cylinder,'and a retractile coil spring disposed parallelyto said cylinder either above or below the latter, according as the arm of said eye-piece is disposed in upstanding or depending position, said spring connecting said'arm to the upper or lower of said lugs, according as it occupies an upper or lower position.
In testimony whereof, I aiiix my signature in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
' VVILLIA'M G. DISCHER.
