BOLTING MACHINE.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUSTUS VVoLF, a citizen of the United States, residing in Chambersburg, Franklin County, Pennsyl- Vania, have invented Bolting Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to sifting or bolting machines which include a reel and a brush for cleaning the same; the arrangement usually being such that said reel and brush rotate at different speeds.
'One object of the present invention is to provide a machine of the above type in which the reel and brush instead of being mounted concentrically are rotatable on different axes so that the brushes will engage only the upper or top part of the bolting cloth or screen surface of the reel and will clear the lower portions thereof; the invention especially contemplating a combination in which the material being bolted is tumbled or agitated upon the lower portionsof the rotary reel while the cleaning brushes act upon the screen or cloth surface of the latter atits uppermost portions so as to dislodge therefrom the particles which maybe clogging or obstructing the screen openings.
The invention further contemplates an arrangement of parts whereby the structure supporting the brush or brushes may be adjusted aXlally relatively to the reel and the invention especially includes means where by injury to the screenor cloth surface of the reel by the brushes is effectually prevented.
These objects and other advantageous ends I attain as hereinafter set forth, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which,

pair of heads 6 from which project sleeves 7 journalled in suitable bearings 8 in the ends of the casing respectively.
Each of said heads 6 likewise has an outwardly projecting circular flange 9 concentric with its sleeve, fitting into a bearing 10 which in one case is carried by one end of the casing and inthe other case is formed in a transverse partitionll. The end 12 of the casing is provided with a receiving hopper 13 whichthrough an open ing 14 is designed to discharge through a suitable opening in the adjacent head 6 into the interior of the reel which consists of three splitrings 15, 16 and 17 mounted on two pairs of bars ,1820 carried by and extending between the heads 6. Each pair of bars 18 and 20 are detachably connected by bolts (Fig. 4) and the screen or bolting cloth of the reel indicated at 19 is mounted on the inner edges of the rings 15, 16, and 17. The second head 6 of the reel has an outlet opening 21 discharging into a'chute 22 leading outside of the casing, through an opening 23 in the adjacent end 30 thereof. A partition 24 extends across the bottom of the casing in the plane of the ring 1g of the reel which it approaches as shown in Fig. 4. A helical conveyor 25 is mounted in the trough 3 upon a shaft 26 and its convolutions are so designed that it delivers material falling into the trough from the chamber 27 defined by the partition 24 and the casing end 12, into a delivery opening 28 in the bottom of the trough. That part'of said conveyor in the chamber 29 defined by the partition 24 and the end 30 of the casing, delivers the material entering the trough from said chamber to a second outlet 31.
The box or casing 1 is carried upon suitable legs 33 and transverse bracing members 34 and includes at each end of the machine horizontally projecting members 35 connected by a horizontal beam or bar 36 at its middle portion. Each of the bars 36 carries or has formed integral with it an open portion. or box 37 illustrated in the present instance as of octagonal form and having mounted within it a bearing 38 supporting a shaft 39 which extends through the sleeves of the head 6 and so placed that in one position it may be substantially con.- centric with the reel 5.
The bearings 38 are carried by radially adjustable screws or bolts 40 so that their position within the boxes 37 may be adjusted and the shaft 39 moved parallel to itself, the openings through the sleeves of the heads 6 being of sufficient diameter to permit this adjustment. Within the reel 5 the shaft 39 has fixed to it a pair of plates 41 provided in the present instance with six radiating arms and two oppositely placed arms of each of these plates are connected by paddles or heaters 42. Two other pairs of opposite arms are likewise connected by bars 43 carrying outwardly projecting brushes 44, while the third set of arms is adjustably connected to the plates 41 and carries two rotatable brush structures 45.
One feature of my invent-ion resides in the possibility of so adjusting the bearings 38 by means of the screws 40 as to cause the brushes 45 as well as the brushes 44 of the bars 43 to engage or more closely approach the inside cylindrical surface of the screen or cloth 19 of the reel only at the uppermost portions thereof and therefore clear or be more distant from the sides and lower portions. At the same time the construction and proportions of parts are such that even when the lowermost pair of screws 40 is completely slacked off, the shaft 39 is merely brought to a posit-ion concentric with the reel so that the two sets of brushes are equidistant from the screen surface at all points of their revolution. There is thus no possibility of such accidental loosening of the lower pair of screws as might otherwise permit the" brushes to approach and finally strike the lower part of the screen under conditions of operation.
F or actuating the moving parts of the device I fix a. pulley 46 to one end of the shaft 39 and drive this from any suitable source of power, also fixing to said shaft a sprocket wheel 47 which through a chain 48 and a sprocket wheel. 49 drives the shaft 26 of the conveyor at the bot-tom of the casing. This latter shaft has fixed to it a sprocket wheel 50 which through a chain 51 drives a second sprocket wheel 52 fixed to the sleeve of one I of the heads 6 of the reel, and the various parts are preferably so proportioned that the plates 41 with the brushes and the other elements carried thereby are turned at a materially higher speed than the reel so that under conditions of use powdered material to be sifted or bolted, when delivered through the hopper 13 through the opening in the adjacent head 6, is agitated within the reel by the paddles 42 and brushes.
Both of these sets of elements however are spaced some distance away from the lower part of the cylindrical surface of the screen or bolting cloth, so that there is no excessive pressure produced which forces or squeezes the material through said screen. The finer portions of said material therefore are permitted to pass through the openings of the screen as the mass within the latter is tumbled by revolution, and any permanent clogging or stoppage of the screen openings is effectually prevented since both the rotary brushes 45 and the straight brushes 44 engage and clean the upper portion and top of the screen surface where their action is uninterfered with by the main body of the material being treated.
As aresult of this arrangement the machine is capable of operatingat a relatively high capacity and produces the highest grades of product, the particular machine illustrated having its cylindrical screen body made in two parts having different size meshes on opposite sides of the partition 16, and the conveyor blades 25 being so arranged that the material passing through these two parts of the screen are independently delivered from the machine through the delivery openings 28 and 31. The tailings which gradually accumulate in the part of the reel having the coarser mesh ultimately find their way through the opening 21 into the chute 9 2 and out through the opening 23.
It may be noted that the rotary brushes are particularly adapted for use when a wire screen is used while when a bolting cloth is employed the straight brushes 44 are usually preferred. The eccentricity of the rotary brushes relatively to the reel may be adjusted to any desired degree by suitable manipulation of the lower pairs of adjusting screws 40 which may be maintained in any given positions by suitable jam nuts. As a result the brushes may be caused to actually bear upon or to slightly clear the upper portions of the wire screen or bolting cloth as may be desired.
As the brushes wear they may be adjusted radially without disturbing the adjustment of the structure which supports them and for this purpose the plates 41 are radially slotted (as at ('30 Fig. 4) for the reception of clamping bolts 61 which connect to them the radially extending arms 62 whereby the brushes are carried.
While T have referred to my device as applied to a bolting machine, it is to be under stood that without departing from my in vention it may be advantageously used in connection wit-h any form of machine having a cylindrical screen and members within it designed to operate on the upper part or top portions in order to dislodge material or otherwise clean the screen surface.
I claim 1. The combination in a bolting machine of a rotary reel; a cleaning member within the same including a shaft extending eccentrically through the ends of the reel; and

The combination in a bolting machine of a rotary reel; a shaft extending through the said reel adjacent the center line thereof; at least one brush rotatably mounted on the shaft Within the reel; means for supporting the shaft in position to cause the brush to operate mainly upon the upper portions of the reel as well as upon the remainder thereof.
3. The combination in a bolting machine of a casing; a reel rotatably mounted therein; a frame rotatably mounted Within said reel; at least one brush carried by said frame; means for driving the reel and the brush at different speeds; and means for holding the frame in position to cause the brush to approach most closely to the upper portion of the perforated surface of the reel While permitting it to operate also upon the remainder of said surface.

The combination in a bolting machine of a casing; a reel Within said casing having tubular supporting members; a shaft extending through said members; a brush supporting structure on said shaft Within the reel; means for supporting the shaft to maintain the brush carrying structure eccentric to the reel; and means for causing relative rotation of the reel and the brush carrying structure,

The combination in a bolting machine of a supporting frame; a casing mounted thereon; a reel rotatably mounted Within the casing and having bearing sleeves; boxes carried by the frame at opposite ends of the casing; bearings vertically adjustable in the boxes; a shaft carried by said bearings extending through the sleeves of the reel; a series of brushes carried by the shaft Within the reel; means for maintaining the bearings in said boxes in position to cause eecentricity of the brushes relatively to the reel; and means for causing relative rotation of the brushes and reel.
6. The combination in a bolting machine of a supporting frame; a casing mounted thereon; a reel rotatably mounted Within the casing and having bearing sleeves; boxes carried by the frame at opposite ends of the casing; bearings in the boxes; a shaft carried by said bearings and extending through the sleeves of thereel; a series of brushes carried by the shaft Within the reel, means for adjustably maintaining the bearings in said boxes in positions to cause eccentricity of the shaft and its brushes rela= tively to the reel; and. means for causing relative rotation of the brushes and reel, the parts being proportioned to cause the shaft to be substantially concentric with the reel When the bearings are in their lowest positions in the boxes.
7. The combination in a bolting machine of a supporting frame; a casing mounted thereon; a reel rotatably mounted Within the casing and having sleeves; boxes carried by the frame at opposite ends of the easing; bearings in the boxes; a shaft carried by said bearings and extending through the sleeves of the reel; a series of brushes carried by the shaft Within the reel; screws adjustably mounted in the boxes for supporting the bearings With the shaft and brushes eccentrically to the reel; and means for causing relative rotation of the brushes and reel.
8. The combination in a bolting machine of a rotary reel; a frame rotatably mounted Within the reel; brushes mounted on said frame and adjustable radially thereof; ad-' justable means for supporting the frame to cause the brushes to act mainly on the upper parts of the reel; and means for relatively rotating the frame and reel.
