of Ohio, have invented certain new and use ful. Improvements in Cast Metal Wheels; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to animprovement 1n cast metal wheels designed particularly for self propelled vehicles and it consists in a cast metal wheel the spokes of which areshaped to provide for lateral strength whereby breaking or dishing of the wheel is prevented when the machine skids or in rounding a curve or when the wheels strike a curb. It-further consists in a wheel having spokes so shaped as to act as fan blades and assist in cooling the brake drum and brake band. It further consists in details of construction as will be more fully explained and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of the rear wheel of an automobile, partof it being broken away, and the brake drum being shown in dotted lines; Figure 2 is a view in section of the same the brake drum being shown in full lines; Figure 3 is-a transverse section 'ofone of the spokes; Figure. 4 is a view in elevation of a front wheel of the type shown in Figures 1 to 3, and Figures 5 to 11 inclusive are views! of slightly modified forms of wheels.
The wheel comprises a-felly 10, hub 11 and spokes 12 all cast integral. The spokes are elliptical in cross section with their long diameters extending transversely of the wheel as shown in Figures 1 and 2, thus distributing the metal so asto provide for great lateral strength and prevent dishing of the wheelwhen the machine skids or when subjected to great lateral stresses such as occurs when it is turning a curve, or when the wheels strike a curb or other obstruction. Spokes so shaped and having comparatively flat and wide front and rear faces also act as fan blades for cooling the brake and drum 15 of the'rear wheel, and being of metal have a greater factor of conductivity for heat and hence a tendency to conduct the heat away from the brake drum and thus keep it cool.
In the construction shown in Figures 1, 2 and 1 each spoke has an integral enlarged boss 13 at its juncture with the telly for the passage of the bolts for attaching the demountable rim or tire holding clips in place and each rear wheel as shown in Figures 1 and 2 is also provided intermediate its ends,
and about midway thereof with an enlargement 14 having a drilled opening therethrough for the passage of the bolts which secure the brake drum 15 to the wheel. As shown in Figure 2 these enlargements .14 project at the inner edges of the spokes to form bearings for the brake drum 15, thus leaving spaces 16 between the drum and spokes for the free circulation of air which of course materially assists in keeping the brake drum cool. a
The felly 11.is provided with a hole 1-7 for the passage of the air pipe communicating with the inner tube of the tire, not shown.
The construction shown in Figure 4; represents the front wheel of an automobile and is identical with that shown in Figures 1, 2 and 3 except that it is not provided with a brake drum, or the spoke enlargements for the attachment of a drum.
The wheel shown in Figure 5. is identical with that shown in Figure 1 except that each alternatespoke isprovided with a'drilled able rim or tire clip, and the enlargement for the brake drum bolts are nearer the hub,
the latter construction being designed particularly for Ford cars.
In Figures 6 and 7 I have shown rear wheels provided with brake "drum cast integral with the spokes. In other respects they are identical with the construction shown in Figure 5. The front'wheels to be used with the'wheels shown in Figures 5, 6 and 7 are identical with Figure 4 except that the bosses 13 for the demountable rim holding clips are in each alternate spoke as in Figure 5 instead of in each spoke.
In the construction shown in Figures 8 to11 inclusive, the spokes are of S-shape. Spokes of this shape are more resilient than strai ht spokes, and in case the rim or felly shrin s while cooling, the spokes will give or bend without breaking. The advantage of the spokes, elliptical in cross section, with their long diameter transversely of the wheel, in addition to adding lateral strength as above explained, are that there are no recesses or pro'e ctions to collect dirt; are brake drum securing bolts, the said enlargereadily and easily cleaned and owing to the ments projectin inwardly from the spokes sidespacesbetween them due to flattening, so as to hold t e brake drum -away from permit of ready access to the brake band the spokes thusv leaving an air space befor adjustin and repairin same. 7 tween the spokes and drum.
