(GRANTED UNDER THE `rnovrsrorrs Aor THE ACT 0E MARCH a, 19,21, 41 sTATfE, 131s.)
To all 'whom t may concern:
Be it known that we, GAETANO CORBELLA and GUALTIERO LoNGoNI, sub'ects of the King of Italy, residents of l ilan, in the Kingdom of Italy, No. 3 Via Lavanderie Sociali, Milan, have invented new' and useful nism, (for which we have filed application in Italy Nov. 18, 1916, patent granted Nov. 30, 1916, No. 156,920, Gen. Reg.,) of which the following is a specification.
The object of the present invention is an improvement in the mechanism for operating valves7 especially for internal combustion engines, greater lightness and simplicity being obtained than with the mechanisms used heretofore.
rIhe annexed drawings sho-w one method'l of carrying the invention into effect by way of example. v i .Y
Fig. 1 shows in section the cylinder head of an internal combustion engine fitted with valve controlling mechanisms according to the present invention". I
Fig. 2 shows a detail of the operating mechanism of coaxial valves.
Figs. 3 and 4 show'a modiliedvalve operf ating mechanism in side lview and spectively. r
-wand -bare coaxial valves. The inner one ahas for its seat the inner periphery of the outer valve Z9- -gis the spindle of ctand -L is the hollow :spindle of -b--g bothspindles are operated against the action of the respective plan resprings -cand -clbearing against discs -eand -frespectively.
As indicated in the drawing,'both valves are operated by one and the same cam actuating a rod ?1- hinged to one end of the double arm lever -L-. The opposite end of the lever -Z- is fork-shaped and' the two fork-Shanks -Jmractuate the disc fof the valve -bdirectly, whilstv the spind le -gof the valve af/ is actuated by the lever -Z indirectly through the bolt wf and double arm lever -p--, the bolt -n being vertically slidable in the guiding support -grigidly secured to the cylinder end, andV the lever pbeing pivotally mounted on a fixed bracket likewise rigidly secured to the cylinder end and facing the top end of the spindle -g-.
Consequent on this arrangement the valves c4- andl ZJ- are actuated alternately, that is to say, when -the end 1mofthe lever Z presses downk and opens the valve b, it does not operate the spindle -g.- of the valve -a-, which conse- VquentlyV remains closed, whereas 'when the Improvements 1n Valve-Controlling Mechaend fm-of the lever Z- is raised and releases the disc -f-' thus leaving the valve -bclosed, the bolt -ncauses the lever --pto swing on its pivot and its end of which is pivotally connected to said lever -ZE- Thev other end of 'link is pivoted at -r-to one 'sof a pair of levers s and -srespectively fulcrumed at -tandr -tin a'suitable support (not shown), which may be a pivotally supported in the embodiment shownV in Fig. 1. The levers -sand -sare pivotally connected with one-anfother as by a pin and slot connection shown at u, the outer end fv of the lever Y -sbeing adapted to act upon the spindle -g-. As may be readily seen, the ends -vand -mof the opposite sides .-Z- and -s-sof the articulated parallelogram will move in opposite directions upon actuation of the pivoted end of lever -Z-. In other words by depressing the pivoted end of lever -Z- the parts -oand 'mwill be moved towards'each other as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3, and
by raising the pivoted end of lever -Z-- ating said valves, said means comprising two valve controlling levers pivoted in said sup- :Lid
port, an actuating' member adapted to move in opposite directions and so operate one of. said levers, and a member interposed between said levers and movable lrelatively f ing a sliding engagement WithV Asaid support.V
`lrln a valve controlling mechanism, the
combination lwith twovalves, of a stationary support and means for operating said valves,
said Ameans'eomprising tvvovalve controlling levers Vpivoted in said support, an actuating memberadapted to move in oppositeV directions and so operate one of said levers, and
' a bolt engaging said levers on opposite sides of their respective pivots, said bolt ,being slidably mounted in said support;v
In testimony whereof We aHiX our signatures.
