Description

E. GRAY.
SPEAR. APPUCATION HLED APR. 14', 1921 Patented May 2, 1922.
0 I I IQVENZNf/LAZ ATTORNEYfi,
Tao srA-Tes;
4 IELLSWORTH GRAY, or KUMBLE, TEXAS.
SPEAR. f
To allwhomz't may concera: I j
Be it known'that I, ELLswoR'rn GRAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at I Humble, in the county of Harris and State this invention has particular relationqto wherein a has left hand threads. Threaded onto theof Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a spear, of which -the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in a spear. v
One object of the inventiomis to provide a device of the character describedspecially designed for use in with-drawing pipe which ma. becomefstuck in a well, bore.
'1 nother object is to provide a spear Which maybe readily letdown into a well bore and which will enter the pipe to be" pulled and engage therewith to withdraw the same, and also embodies means wherev by it may be easily released from the pipe and withdrawn in case the pipe cannot be pulled.' f A v A further feature resides invthe provision of a spear which is adapted for use either in deep or shallow wells. 2
With the above and other objects in'view certain novel features of construc ion, operation and arrangement of parts, an example of'which is given in this specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings,
Figure 1 isa vertical sectional view of the spear, andt Figure 2 is a transverse sectional view taken on the" line 22 of Figure 1.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the pipe to be pulled. The numeral 2 designates an actuating-shaft which has a central annular rib -3. The upper section of this shaft has right hand threads and the lower section upper 'end ofthe shaft 2 there is a coupling 4 into which the lower end of the string of pipe 5 is threaded. This string is used to let the spear down into, and withdraw it from the well bore.
Threaded onto the upper right-hand threaded section of the shaft there is a nut 6 formed with a lateral lug 7. Fitted over the shaft 2 beneath the coupling' there is a tubular jaw 8 having a, vertical slot 9 in one side in which the lug 7 runs. The inner contour of the jaw flares downwardly arid its periphery has annular engaging Specification of Letters Patent:
Patented May 2,1922.
Application filed April 14', 1921. SeriaLNo. 461,363.
.teeth 10. Threaded onto the lower or left- -hand-threaded section of the shaft 2 there sleeve is recessed to receive the head 12,
forming the annular shoulder 13, againstwhich said-head'is adapted to abut.
In operation thespear is let down into the bore and the pointed head will direct it into the pipe to be pulled. The jaw is of a. size to fit closely within said pipe and when an upward pull is exerted on the string 5 the teeth 10 will engage with said pipe and the jaw will be spread bythe upwardly tapering sleeve and held insecure engagement with the pipe and the pipe thus withdrawn. In case the pipe is too tightly struck to be pulled it becomes necessary to release andwithdraw the spear. The spear may be released bymotating 'the string in a righthand, or clockwise, direction. When so rotated-the nut 6 will be run up against the annular inwardly extending'flange 14 carried by the upper end of the jaw, and the -sleeve will be run downwardly until the shoulder 13 thereof abuts-against the head 12' and a continued rotation of the string and shaft,2 will cause the nut 6 to elevate the jaw and release it from the wedging eflect of said sleeve and it will be thereby released from the pipe and may be withdrawn.
What I claim is 1. A spear including an actuating shaft, a string to the lower end of which said shaft is attached, the upper and lower sections of said shaft being revcTsely threaded, a nut threaded onto the upper threaded section, an expansible jaw fitted over said shaft and nut' and whose upper end has an inwardly extending shoulder, means for preventing the relative rotation of said nut and jaw, a tapering sleeve threaded onto the lower threaded section of said shaft and adapted to wedge between said shaft and aw to expand the latter, and a head carrledby the lower end of the shaft.
2. A spear including an actuating shaft,
7 a string to the lower end "of which said shaft is attached. the upper and lower sections of said shaft being reversely threaded, a nut threaded onto the upper threaded section, an expansible jaw fitted over said shaft and nut and whose upper end has an inwardly extending sl1oulder.means for preventing the relative rotation of said nut and jaw. a tapering sleeve threaded onto the lower threaded section of said shaft and adapted to wedge between said shaft and jaw toexpand the latter, and a head carried by the lower end of the shaft. said shaft. when rotated, operating to carry said sleeve against said head and also to carry said nut against said shoulder. whereby the jaw is withdrawn from the sleeve.
3. A spear including an actuating shaft having upper and lowersections. reverselythreaded,an expansible jaw fitted over said shaft, a taperin sleeve threaded onto the lower section and adapted to wedge between the shaft and jaw to expand the latter, means adapted to be actuated by the upper section of said shaft into engagement. with said jaw, SEllCl'Slltlft, when rotated, operating to force the sleeve away from said jaw and acting through said means to release said jaw from said sleeve.
4.1K spear including an actuating shaft having upper and lower sections. reversely threaded. an expansible jaw fitted over said shaft, a tapering sleeve threaded'onto the lower section and adapted to wedge between the shaft and jaw to expand the latter,
means" adapted to be actuatedby the upper.
section of said shaft into engagement with said jaw, said shaft. when rotated, operatlng to force the sleeve away from said jaw and actlng through said m'eansito release said jaw from said sleeve, and means for rotating thewshaft.
5. A spear including an actuating shaft limits the. downward movement of the sleeve on'the shaft and 'a shoulder carried by said jaw, against which the niitis adapted toengage to release the jaw from saidsleeve.
6. A spear including a shaft haying reversely threaded upper and lower sections,
.a nut threaded onto the upper sectiom a lat eral lug carried by the nut, a downwardly flared expansible' jaw fitted over' the shaft 1 i I and nut and having a vertical slot in one side. into which the lug pro ects, an inwardly extending annular flange carried by l the upper end of the jaw, against which the nut is adapted to abut, an upwardly tapering sleeve threaded onto the lower section of the shaft and formed to enter and expand said jaw,.and a head carried by the lower endof the shaft.
In testimony whereof I have signed my.
name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses,
