FRANK J. TONE, 0F NIAGARA FALLS, NEW YQRK,.ASSIGNOR TO THE CARBORUN 'DUM COMPANY, OF NIAGARA FALLS, NEW YORK, A. CORPORATION OF PENNSYLVANIA.
ABRASIVE coa'rnn sneer AND. METHOD or memorial: same.
To all whom itmag concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK TONE, a citn zen of the United States, residing at Niagara" Falls, in the county of Niagara, and
'tion of the same.
My invention relates to the-manufacture of abrasive coated paper, cloth or. other flexible sheets. These sheets, coated with abrasive grains such as those of emery or carborundum, are now used in many industries. For some purposes the flexible sheet is made up of a belt and the material to be ground or polished is brou'ghtin'to contact with the abrasive face (if the belt when driving at high speed. The abrasive paper or cloth, when used in this manner, deteriorates, because the spaces between the abrasive grains become filled up or clogged with particles of the material being ground or abraded. As this takes place the coating surface becomes glazed and the belt slides over the surface without proper grinding or polishing of the same.
My invention is designed to reduce or prevent this deterioration of the sheets due to glazing or clogging with the abraded ma! terlal and also to increase the life and efliciency of such sheets. The invention consists generally in applying the abrasive coating in such a waythat portions of the backing sheet are left free of abrasive, thus making clearance spaces within which the ground articles of material may be received and eed from the .working portions.
- In these sheets as ordinarily made, the
coating of abrasive grains covers the entire working surface of the paper or cloth; while under my invention .the backing sheet isonly coated .in certain portions thereof,-withan In the drawings in which I show diagram- -matically one form of apparatus for carry- 'ingi'oi tmy invention, 2 represents a roll of paper'to'becoated, the paper passing from Specification of Letters Patent. Patented lu 2 1922 Application filed May 20,
1920. Serial No. 382,804.
this roll over idler rolls 3 and4 to the upper surface of the glue roll 5. This glue .roll dips in dissolved'or melted glue of a glue tank 6. The paper is, pressed against the glue roll by a premure roll 7 which is adjustable and which determinesthe amount and thickness of the coating The rolls 5 and 7 are driven by any suitable connections in the direction indicated by the arrows; and after passlng around the roll 7 the abrasive is fed on the upper glue coated surface of the sheet. In the form shown, 8 is a hopper containing the abrasive grains, and having a control roller feed 9 which causes a thin sheet of the grains, indicated at 10, to fall by gravity transversely of the paper or cloth sheet traveling thereunder. In the form shown, the grains are prevented from falling on certain portions of the wet lue surface to leave clearance spaces, by ans of a series of triangular deflector bars 11 mounted in a stationary frame 12 extending over and adjacent to the traveling sheet; its the falling sheet of abrasive ains strikes the deflectors, the grains are fe to the paper in separated rows. The grains striking the deflectors, will fall between them, the deflectors being spaced in any desirable manner to give the spacing desired. The paper A is, therefore, coated with rows of abrasive material with clearance space between.
In the form shown, the frame is rigidly mounted, but I may impart to the deflector grating a movement transversely or diagonally back and forth across the paper in different manners to give either d iagonal rows or zigzag rows of grain with spaces between them.
- Other means for-causing the grains to having spaced grooves to cause rows of the grain to fall on the paper; or I may bypass the falling sheet by deflecting vanes.
The advantages of my. invention will be a parent-to-those-. skilled in theart, since t e clogging or glazing of such abrasivesheets is reduced or prevented and the sheets given a longer lifeand more eflicient action.
The abrasive may be applied to the surface of paper, cloth, or any flexible-backing; for use on abrasive wheels and disks, for
I abrasive belts, abrasive sheets, or other forms of abrasive devices. Many changes may be made in the apparatus employed for app-lying' the abrasive, as well as in the character and size of the ab asive grains themselves, without departing from myinvention,
I claim:
1. The method of making abrasive sheets which consists in securing abrasive grains toselected or separated portions of the face of the sheets leaving other portions uncoated.
2. The methodof making abrasive sheets which consists incoating the sheets with cement and applying abrasive grains to selected portions of the cemented surface, leavsive grains secured to intermittent portions ing alternate uncoated portions.
3. The method of making abrasive sheets which consists in coating one side of the sheet with an adhesive and applying separated rows of abrasive grains to the adhesive, leaving intermediate uncoated portions.
,4. The method of making abrasive sheets which consists in coating one side of the sheet with adhesive" and feeding separated or interrupted portions of abrasive to the adhesive coated surfacef surface of the sheet with anadhesive and feeding separated streams of abrasive material to the adhesive coated surface leaving intermediate uncoated'portions to give grain coated portions alternating with blank portions.
' 6. As a new article of manufacture, a backing sheet having abrasive grains secured thereto in selected portions alternating with uncoated portions,
7. As a new article of manufacture, a flexible backing sheet having one surface coated with adhesive, and separated rows of abraof the adhesive-coated surface.
8. As a new article of manufacture, a sheet having a complete adhesive coating on one face, and raised separated zones of abrasive material secured to separated portions of the adhesive coating. J
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand.
FRANK aroma.
