Description

H. WILLlAMS.
Wheels for Vehicles.
Patented July-29, 1873.
Egal.
INVENTOR.
NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IMPROVEMENT IN WHEELS FOR VEHICLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 141,411, dated July 29, 1873 application tiled March 29, 1873.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, HUGH WrLLIAMs, of Apple/River, in the county of J o Daviess and State ot' Illinois, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Gast Wheel-Hubs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description ,ot' the construction and operation of the same, reference being` had to the annexed drawings making a part of this specification, and to the letters and tigures ot' reference marked thereon.
Figure l ofthe drawings is a representation ot' a sectional View of my wheel-hub. Figs. 2 and 3 are end views of the same. Fig. 4 is a sectional view.
This invention has relation to cast-iron wheel-hubs, and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of the adjustable center cylinder with its iiange, and the outer annulus designed to be placed over the'said cylinder, and provided with sockets or recesses i'or the reception of the ends of the spokes. The object ot this invention is to provide means whereby the wearing portion ot' the hub may be changed or replaced readily and conveniently.
In the accompanying` drawings, the letter A indicates the hub-core cylinder or box. This portion ot' the hub is designed to be cylindrical, or slightly conical externally, terminating at its outer end in a curved conical extension, a, ot' smaller diameter than the main portion. B indicates a flan ge of considerable width which is cast around the inner end of the center cylinder A, and extends outward from the saine in the direction of a plane perpendicular to its axis. O designates the spoke ring or annulus. This consists of a central sleeve, c, from theinner end of which extends outward a disk-ange, b, between which and a parallel disk-flange, d, extending from the sleeve near its other end are arranged partitions e, forming sockets s for the ends ot' the spokes. The sleeve c extends a short distance at h beyond the ange d. D represent bolts or large rivets by means of which the annulus Gis secured to the iiange B oi' the center box A.
It is apparent that the center or core piece, when worn, can be readily replaced, the new center being readily bolted to the spoke-annulus, which is entire in itself, without going to the shop.
I am aware that a hub having a metallic annulus. one portion of which forms the box, back flange, and spoke-partitions, and the other portion the inner tlange,is not new, and therefore I do not claim such invention; but
' What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
, The hub-core cylinder A, constructed With the broad inner ange B and conical extension a, in combination with the annulus O, haNing the disk-danges b and d and partitions c. sull stantially as and for the purpose specified- In testimony that I claim the above I have y hereunto subscribed my name in the presence ot' two witnesses.
