This invention relatesto adevice for facilitating the insertion of a piston into the cylinder of a ,pump or-engine with its one '7 or more metallic packing rings ,properlyassembled in their respective grooves. It consists of means :for temporarily compressing-a piston ring to substantially the size of the piston so that the ring will readily enter. the cylinder and the invention involves various features and, elements of construction! as here inafter described and shown inthe drawings, and as indicatedby the claims.

is formed with a short slot, 20, and recess, 21, in which the enlargement, 19, on the adjacent portion of the strap may be entered edgewise for anchoring the free end of the strap prior to drawing it tight around the piston ring.
Figure 3 indicates the relation of the partswhen the strap, 2, has been drawn tight around a piston ring, A, on a piston, B. The ring, A, being thus compressed to the same diameter as the piston B, and a part of the ring projecting in Figure '3 slightly above the edge of the compressor strap, 2, it is evident that the piston may now be entered in the cylinder, C, until the upper edge of the compressor strap engages the lower edge of the c linder block, whereupon said strap may be s idably moved down over the piston, B, the ring, A, being by that time in full control of the cylinder wall. This having been done with the uppermost ring on the piston, if there are additional rings, the process can be repeated by first slightly loosening the strap, 2, and causing it to encompass the next ring on the piston, then sliding it longitudinally over the ring as the latter is gradually entered in the cylinder, C. When the piston with all its rings has beenentered in'the cylinder the device may be removed by disengaging the enlargement, 19, at the free end of the strap, 2, from the recess, 21, and the slot, 20, and thus drawing the strap around the piston and free of said parts.
I claim:
1. Apiston ring compressor comprising a frame, a fully rotatable circular winding drum thereon and a flexible loop continuous from end to end, having one end attached to the frame and the other end hitched to the drum so that rotation of the drum will ad just and tighten the loop.
2. A piston ring compressor comprising a frame, a fully rotatable circular winding drum thereon, a flexible loop continuous I y from end to end having one end attached to the frame and the other end hitched to the drum to permit adj ust-ment in the size of the loop, a ratchet wheel concentric with the drum and attached thereto, and a detent on the frame adapted to engage the ratchet wheel for holding the loop in adjustment.

4. A piston ring compressor comprising a frame, a winding drum journaled on said frame with its face against a flat surface thereof, a flat metal ribbon wound on said drum and forming a flexible loop with its outer end engaged with the frame, said drum having'a ratchet wheel rigidly associated with it at the opposite side from said flat face of the frame, and of larger diameter than the drum, to serve as a flange therefor to guide said ribbon on the drum, and a, de tent on the frame for said ratchet wheel.
5. A piston ring compressor comprising a frame with a handle, a winding drum on the frame, and a flexible loop having one end attached to the frame and the other end hitched to the drum for varying the size of said loop, together with a ratchet wheel and a spring-pressed detent mounted on the frame for automatically maintaining the drum in adjustment, and a trip finger extending adjacent the handle for releasing said detent at will.
6. A piston ring compressor comprising a frame with a housing formed therein, a handle projecting therefrom and a cover for the housing; a winding drum having its shaft journaled in said housing and cover and with a ratchet wheel 7 and detent en- Y Louis J. GENETT.
