Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed November 15, 1920. Serial No. 424,123.
To all whom it may concern:
citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certaln new and useful Improvements in alVrapping Machine; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference belng had to the accompanying drawings, and to the numerals of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to an improved wrapping machine, which is adapted to be conveniently operated at a high rate of speed to apply a plurality of wrappingspn an object" to be wrapped, and the maehlne described herein "is particularly designed to apply a reinforced wrapping for preventing injury to automoblle tire casings during the time intervening between their manufacture and use. In order that this wrapping, which ordinarily comprises paper or other suitable material, may not be easily injured, it is desirable that a reinforcing wrapping be applied therewith. This reinforcing wrapp ng usuallypomiprises a twine, cord, or- WII'G,
I which is spirally applied with the main wrapping, and. this invention provides a machine which is particularly adapted to apply such auxiliary Wrapping with the main wrapping. V
It is an object of this invention to provide a wrapping machine for applying main and auxiliarywrap'pings and having means for severing the auxiliary wrapping as the machine is stopped.
It is a further obj provide a wrapping'machine for applying main and auxiliary wrappings and having a unitary control mechanism for starting and stopping the machine and for automatically severing the auxiliary wrapplng. when the machine is stopped.
It is an important object of this invention to provide a wrapping machine for applying a. plurality of wrappings and having means for automatically severing one of said wrappings at the time the machine is stopped.
Other and further important objects of this invention will be apparent from the disclosures in the specification and the accompanying drawings.

As shown on the drawings:
The wrapping machine as shown in Figure 1 consists of a base 1, provided with suitable hearings in which a drive shaft 2 is mounted. The drive shaft 2 is provided with a flanged friction driving roll or pulley wheel 3, into which a revolvable shuttle 4 engages to be driven thereby. Said shuttle carries a spool carrier 5 adapted to have a reel of paper or other suitable material secured thereon and a. container 6 which is adapted to receive a roll of cord 7 which is used as the auxiliary or reinforcing wrapping. Said rotatable shuttle 4 is not only supported upon-the driving friction wheel 3 between the flanges thereof, but also between the flanges of and upon idler guide wheels or rollers 8 and 9 respectively, which are mounted on the extremities of a curved U-shaped frame secured upon the base 1. For rotatably supporting a tire 11 on which the -wrapping is to be applied, a pair of supporting rollers 12 are adjustably mounted on the base 1 and act to rotate the tire 11 through the eye of the shuttle 4 in the usual and well-known man ner. In order that the material may be tightly wrapped onthe tires, a pair of bead-pressing rollers 15 and 16 are provided and are pivotally mounted on the frame 10 and act to pressthe beads of the tire inwardly to insure a tight wrapping.
In order that the various operations incident to the wrapping of a tire may be conveniently controlled, a control shaft 17 is journalled in the frame 1 and adapted to be rotated therein by means of a lever 18 pivoted on the frame 1 at 18 and the lower end of which is pivoted on a crank arm 120 on the end of the shaft 17, whereby a plurality of operations of the machine are controlled. For connecting the drive shaft 2 with a source of power, a crank arm 19 is secured to said shaft 17, and a link 20 actuated by said arm causes the engagement of a suitable clutch to connect said drive shaft 2 with a' source of power, such as a belt-driven pulley or an electric motor.
For stoppingthe rotation of the driving pulley 3 upon disengagement of the shaft 2 from the source of power, a brake 21 is provided whichis pivoted at 22 and which is provided with a frictional surface 23 adapted to engage the flanges on the driving pulley 3 and stop the rotation thereof. The inner end of said brake 21 is connected with the control shaft 17 by means of a link 24 which is secured in an eccentrically mounted boss on said control shaft by a universal The bead pressing rollers 15 and 16 are normally held inwardly against the beads of the tire which is being wrapped by means of coil springs 26 and 27 which are engaged against theinner face of the'frame 10 and'the pivotal supports for said bead pressing rollers. It is therefore desirable that said bead pressing rollers be released from engagement with the tire upon stopping of the machine, and mechanism for effecting this release is accordingly provided and operated from the control shaft 17. Said mechanism comprises links 28 and 29, which are pivotally connected to the pivotal supports ofthe bead pressing rollers and which extend downwardly therefrom and have slotted portions at their lower ends loosely engaged over the control shaft 17 and which are connected by a roller, 30 a short distance above said shaft. A cam 31, which is secured to the control shaft 17, extends upwardly between-the lower ends of the links 28 and 29 and acts to engage a roller 30 when the shaft 17 is rotated, thus moving the links 28 and 29 upwardly and disengaging the bead pressing rollers 15 and 16 by compressing the springs 26 and 27.
The rotatable shuttle 4, which is shown in detail in Figure 2, is provided with a hinged portion 32, which is adapted to be swung pin 33 mounted thereon, thereby varying the tension on the wrapping material. From the tension mechanism the wrapping material is led through a suitable folder device 34 and around an inclined guide roller 35 to a tire casing 11 which is being Wrapped. The auxiliary wrapping of cord or twine is led outwardly from the spool 7 in the casing 6 through a guide 36 to a guide 37, which guides it upwardly through a severing mechanism and around a guide pin 38 to the tire casing 11. I
It is to be noted that the container or cage 6 provides a particularly desirable means for carrying the auxiliary wrapping on the shuttle, since it is only necessary to remove the cover thereof and insert a ball of twine or other suitable material therein when it is desired to replenish the same.
The severing mechanism through which the cord from the roll 7 passes, comprises a tube 39, which is engaged in an aperture in the shuttle 4 and extends outwardly from the face thereof, being provided at its outer end with a notch 40 and having the inner end thereof threaded internally at 41. Engaged in said threaded portion 41 is an apertured block 42, which extendseoutwardly from the rear of the casing 4 and in which is rotatably mounted a cutter member 43, whichextends outwardly through the tube 39 and has its outer end 44 cut awayoppo site the notch 40 to allow the cord from the ball 7 to normally pass freely through said notch to the guide 38. Sai severing member 43 is normally held in the position shown in Figures 6 and 7 by means of a spring 45.

Said means comprise a plate 49, which is pivoted on the frame 10 at 50 and which has a roller 51 pivoted thereon. at 52, whereby rotation of said plate about said pivot 50 will move said roller 51 upwardly to contact the extension 47 and cause the cutaway portion 44 on the severing member 43 to be rotated into the position shown in dotted lines in Figure 6, whereby the cord engaged through the notch 40 is severed. The movement of said plate 49 is limited by stops 53 mounted on the shuttle frame 10 and as said roller 51 contacts the extension 47 to rotate the severing member 43 when said extension moves past said roller due to the rotation of the shuttle 4, as soon as the extension 47 has passed the roller 51 the action of the spring 45 will rotate the severing member 43 back to its normal position in the tube 39. Aconnection is provided whereby the plate 49 may be rotated about the pivot 50 by actuation of the control shaft 17. For this purpose a rod 53 is connected to said plate at a point offset from the pivots 50 and 52, and said rod 53 extends downwardly and is connected by means of a spring connection 54 to a crank 55 secured to sald control shaft 17. Consequently rotation of said control shaft 17 will actlto rotate the plate 49 about the pivot 50 and to cause the roller 51 to contact the extension arm 47, whereby the severing member 43 is rotated and the cord engaged through the notch 40 is severed.
The operation is as follows:
The tire casing which is to be wrapped is inserted through the hinged portion 32 of the shuttle 4 and is rotatably supported on the driving and supporting rolls 12 and engaged through the eye of the shuttle 4 as shown in Figure 2. Wrapping material from the roll of cord 7 and from the spool carrier 5 is engaged therearound, the hinged portion 32 is closed and the machine is started by moving the lever 18, whereby' the shaft 17 is rotated to release the plate 21, whereby the links 28 and 29 are moved downwardly allowing the bead pressing rolls 15 and 16 to engage and press inwardly on the beads of a tire, the shaft 2 at the same time being connected with a suitable source of power through the link 20 which is controlled from said control shaft 17 and which operates a suitable clutch.
The relative rotation of the tire casing 11 and the shuttle .4 in substantially erpendicular planes of course has the e ect of applying the wrapping material spirally on said tire casing, and when said casing is wrapped the machine is stopped by moving the roller 51 to sever the cord which is ennism and the cord severing mechanism, the
operator is enable to quickly remove the wrapped tire from the machine.
Since these various operations are all controlled by the shaft 17, which is rotated by the single lever 18, it is apparent that the machine may be readily controlled and that it is not necessary to have a skillful operator in order to use the same.
It is apparent that numerous details of construction may be. varied through. a wide range without departing from the principles of this invention, and it is therefore not purposed to limit the patent granted otherwise than necessitated'by the prior art.
I claim as my invention:
1. In .a wrapping machine, movable means for applying a wrapping material to an object to be wrapped, arotatable severing mechanism on said movable means for severing the material after the object has been wrapped, resilient'mea'ns for normally holding the severing mechanism ininoperative position, and means for actuating said severing mechanism against the action of said resilient means.
2. In a wrapping machine, rotatable means for applying wrapping material to an object to be wrapped, a severing mechanism on said rotatable means for severing the wrapping material at a predetermined time, and means separate from said rotatable means for operating the severing mechanism.
3. In a wrapping machine, a revolvable shuttle, wrapping material carrying means thereon, means for'supporting an object to be wrapped and advancing it through said shuttle whereby wrapping material from said carrying means is wrapped on the object, and means mounted on the shuttle for severing the-wrapping material between the shuttle and the object after the. same is wrapped. p
4. In a wrapping machine, a revolvable shuttle, wrapping material carrying means thereon, means for supporting an object to be wrapped and advancing it through said shuttle whereby the wrapping material from said carrying meansbis wrapped on the object, and lever-operated means for stopping the machine and severing the wrapping material when the object is wrapped, a portion of said last mentioned means being mounted on the shuttle.
5. The combination with a wrapping machine and the control mechanism thereof, of a mechanism actuated by the control mechanism for severing the wrapping material when the wrapping operation is completed, said severing mechanism being normally separated from the control mechanism and capable of movement relative thereto.
6. The combination with a wrapping machine and the control mechanism thereof, of a mechanism for severing the wrapping material, and a resilient connection between the control mechanism and said severing mechanism permitting operation ofthe control mechanism in case of damage to or stoppage of the severing mechanism.
7. In a wrapping machine, the combination with a frame of a shuttle revolvably mounted therein, a severing mechanism tion with a frame of a shuttle revolvably mounted therein, a severing mechanism pivotally mounted on the shuttle, and means for'severing thereinforcing wrapplng, and

11. In a wrapping machine, a shuttle, a' severing mechanism pivotally mounted therein, a .spring for normally holding the severing mechanism in inoperative position, and means for actuating the severing mechanism against the action of said spring.
12. In a. wrapping machine, a shuttle,- a tubular member mounted thereon having a notch therein adapted to guide wrapping material therethrough, and means rotatably mounted in the tubular member forsevering material engaged in the notch.
