SYLVESTER M. LOGAN OF WARREN. OHIO; MILTON LOGAN. BEING EXECUTOR SAID SYLVES'IER M. LOGAN, DECEA$ED, ASSIGNOR, BY DIRECT AN D MESNE ASSIGBLv MENTS, 0F ONE-HALF TO GERTRUDE M. NEYMAN, 0F SHEAKLEYVILLE. PENNSYL- VANIA, AND ONE-HALF TO MILTON LOGAN" OF WARREN, OHIO.
AEROPLAN E.
Application filed August 27, 1920.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that l, SYLvns'rEn M. LOGAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Warren. in the county of Trumbull and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Aeroplanes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in aeroplanes, and my object'is to provide an aeroplane which is particularly constructed to rise vertically from the ground, remain stationary in the air, move forward or backward at the will of the operator, and wherewith a landing may be accomplished by slowly settling to the ground, all substantially as hereinshown and described and more particularly pointed out'in the claims.
In the drawings accompanying this application, Fig. 1 is a front view of my improved aeroplane, Fig. 2 is a plan view, and Fig. 3 a side elevation. all said views being considerably reduced and diagrammatic. Fig. 4 is a plan view showing the detail construction of the propellers, and Fig. 5 is a side View thereof on the line of the countershaft.
As shown herein the invention has been applied to a b'y-plane, and an opening 2 provided in the upper and lower planes centrally between the ends thereof on the longitudinal median line of the body or main frame 3. Within this opening 2, or more correctly speaking, directly above this opening, I mount four horizontal propellers or fans 4 on separate vertical shafts 5 having bevel gears 6 adapted to mesh with similar bevel gears 7 on a longitudinal counter shaft 8 situated centrally between twin motors 9 and 10 arranged at opposite sides of open- 'ings 2 between the two main planes.
Each motor has a forwardly-extending shaft 11 equipped with a driving propeller 12, and power is applied to counter shaft 8 from either motor shaft by separate sprocket gears and chains 14 under the control of separate clutch devices 15, see Fig. 2. The lifting propellers 4- are also arranged in pairs revolving in opposite directions, and opening 2 is large enough to allow a free passage for the air driven downward by the propellers 4. Any number of such lifting propellers may be used by using a line or Specification of- Letters Patent.
Patented A r. 25, 1922.
Serial No. 406,340.
- quartered interlapping relation as shown.
The two fan blades of each lifting propeller 4 are also constructed to pivot or turn on a horizontal shaft 16 extending through the vertical shaft 5 whereby the working angle of the blades may be changed by manipulatin are connected with the inner ends of the fan blades of propellers 4 by means of sliding collars 18 and links 19. see Figs. 4 and 5. The driving propellers 12 also embody pi"- oted blades 20 linked to slidable collars 21 which are operatively controlled by pivoted levers 22 and 23 so that the working angle of the blades may be changed or reversed to check the speed or reverse the travel of the aeroplane. i
I also provide automatic shutters 24 directly underneath lifting propellers 4, see Figs. 1 and.2, which will open when these propellers drive the air downward to raise the ship, and which shutters will close when the horizontal propellers 4 are idle and the ship is being driven forward by propellers '12. Partitions 25 are also provided under gines alone in the event that the other enginc becomes inoperative. thus assuring a continued flight and safe landing under such conditions. The airship or plane may also be stabilized by changing the angle of the pivot/ed blades in the lifting wheels A and changing the angle of the shutters 24 beneath said lifting wheels. Operation of shutters S may be effected by the pilot by means of levers 26 and cable connections 27, see Fig. 1.
What I claim is:
1. An aeroplane having main supporting surfaces with an opening centrally on the longitudinal medianline of the aeroplane, separate motors and driving propellers at opposite sides of said openmg and ine, a
2. An airship having a main supporting plane provided with an opening on the longitudinal center line of the ship, separate motors on opposite sides of said opening and line, a counter-shaft on said line having power connections with both motors, a plural number of horizontal propellers centrally Within said opening having power connection with said counter-shaft, and a separatedriving propeller connected with each-motor. v i
3. An aeroplane having a plural numberof horizontal lifting propellers arranged in close interlapping relation successively on the longitudinal median line thereof, shutters beneath and deflecting partitions opposite said propellers, and means adapted to revolve the successive propellers in opposite directions.
Signed at Warren, in the county of Trumbull, and State of @hio, this 21st day of August, 1920.
SYLVESTER M. LOGAN.
