SPRING YORK.
BED COMPANY, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, A CORPORATION OF .NEW
' BED.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUST J. Knnnz- KAnP, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Beds, of whichthe following is a specification.
This invention relates to beds, an object thereof being to provide a bed having areceptacle or tray section supported by the framework thereof for sliding movement and adapted for the purpose of conveniently storing bed clothes or other articles. An object of the present improvement is to provide a bed wherein the spacing bars connect ed to the head and foot thereof are utilized as supporting means for the sliding storage receptacle or tray whereby the same may be supported or-carriedby the bed frame relatively high above the floor and between the spacing bars and mattress fabric. As a result of this improved-construction the receptacle, located as near the top of the bed as practicable, is readily. accessible to the user, conveniently located, and supported for shiftable movement by the framework with-' out any substantial or expensive modification thereof, thereby resulting in a novel, efficient, and cheap structure.
- A further object of my invention is to provide a knockdown, four part bed struc- .ture comprising a head, a foot, a mattress section detachably carried thereby, and a removable sliding storage receptacle having its supporting framework adapted to assist in supporting the mattress'section upon the floor when detached from the head and foot,
the construction being. such that irrespective of'the combinedweight of the mattress section and the receptacle, the same may be de tached from the head and foot without necessitating the removal of the receptacle.
' Other objects of my invention will appear in the following-description thereof, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawv ing forming a part of the specification, wherem like referencefcharacters indicate corresponding parts in the several views and :whereln Flg. '1 1s a perspective view of a bed structure embodying my invention, the sliding tray being shown in partly open position; Fig. 2 is an end elevation partly in section illustrating the same; Fig. 3 is a fragmentary perspective view illustrating certain parts of my improved structure and 1921. the manner of connecting the mattress with the foot; and Fig. '4: is a detail View illustrating the manner of connecting the mat tress section withthe head. I i
In carrying out my. invention, the preferred form thereof being'illustrated in the accompanying drawing, I have provided in general a knockdown bed comprising a head and foot, a spring mattress section detachably connected thereto, anda removable sliding storage receptacleor tray section preferably of less length than the length of the bed, adapted for the purpose of storing bed clothes or other articles, and having its supporting framework formed by side bars or spacing bars connected to the ends-of the mattress section whereby the same is located as faras possible from the floor so as to be conveniently ROCBSSlblGtO the user, and at the Sametime themattress section may be detachedfrom the head and foot without re- .quiring the removal of the receptacle andits contents. It. will be seen that this tray or receptacle .is locatedbetween the spacing. bars of thebed sectionqand the metallic or Patented Apr. 25, 1922.
nected bya cross member or bar 12. The
spring mattress frame comprises a pair of end members 13 to whicha spring fabrid 24 is connected in the usual manner, and in the present instance each of these end members is shown as formed of angle iron and is provided with depending], portions 14;.
,These depending portions l t at their lower ends are connected by. spacingbars 15, preferably constructed of angle iron, .which maintainthe ends properly spaced apart when the spring fabric is stretohedtherebetween.
Each of the legs ll'of the head and foot is provided on its inner side at apredeten mined distancebelow the top of ,the spring ,with inwardly extending-headed pins -.32. .Each ofthe depending-portions leis provided withanotch or slot 33 for the-reception of-the headed pins 82. 'Ih e'head 9 at each side is providedat a point adj acent 'to the top of the spring with a ve'rtically swinging hook 30, pivoted to theinner side of the leg. The footlO has the horizontal upper cross member thereof substantially in alinement with the corresponding member 13 the head and foot at the bottom thereof by pin and slot connections, and at the top the head 9 is connected to the mattress section by vertically swinging hooks, and the foot 10 is connected to the mattress section by a single horizontally swinging hook 31 having a restricted vertically swinging movement. Said hooks are adapted to hook overthe end bars of the mattress section and act to wedge the mattress section into tight engagement with the head and foot, thus preventing any shaking or wobbling joints. In detaching the parts the hooks are released and shifted away from the members 13, before the mattress is-handled, and then the head or foot is swung away from the mattress section and the'same readily lifted from the pins 32 and lowered to the floor. Thus it is not necessary to maintain the members 14: and 11 in parallel relation in order to d'is'connect'the pin and notch connection, and furthermore this swinging movement of the head and foot tends to loosen the connec tions, and so there is no possibility of a binding or sticking action when detaching the mattress section.
A suitable distance from the ends of the mattress section, cross bars 16, preferably of angle iron, are connected to the side bars 15 of the framework; These cross bars are securedthereto in such manner that the'horizontal flanges 17 thereof in conjunction with the horizontal flanges of the side bars 15, will form supporting tracks or ways for a storage receptacle ortray section 1.8. This receptacle maybe of anydesired shape or construction and it will be seen in the present instance that the same is of less length than the length of the bed, although it is to be understood that the same may be of any desired length according to the location of the cross bars 16 relative to the mattress section,
In order to support the receptacle or tray adjacent to the center thereof while in its normal position between the spacing 'bar'sl15 and the spring mattress 24 a suitable angle bar "or other member 1-9- may be securedto the bars 15 intermediate 'the'cross bars '16.
It will be seen that the construction is such that the receptacle or tray 18 isfree tosli'de ontheways'br tracks 17 beyond either side of the bed. Thus the user may shift the same to an open position from his position at either side of the bed, and as 'aresult of this facile and inexpensive construction the head and foot, without necessitating the maintaining of the upright members 1 1 and 11 in parallel relation, and without anybinding or sticking of the connecting parts, this may be accomplished easily irrespective of the weight of the parts. Hence the construction permits the mattress section to be detached and lowered to restupon the floor without" necessitating the removal of the bulky receptacle 1'8 and its contents. W/Vhen thus detached the mattress will be supported on the floor by the supporting members 15 of the receptacle and the depending portions 14, and in such position the receptacle may be readily removed or-withd-rawnwithout having to lift the same and its contents. A great saving in time, effort, and labor in the manipulation of the parts thus results from this improved detachable bed structure. Although I have describedmy invention in its preferred form it'is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the construc tion herein shown and described except in so far as defined in the claims and embraced within the scope thereof. 7
I claim as my. invention: v 1. In a bed structure the combination of a mattress section comprising end members connected together by a spring fabric, spacing bars connected tosaid end members and constructed to form with the fabric a housing space for a storage receptacle, horizontal ways carried by said spacing bars, and a re'- ceptacle supported upon said ways forslide ing movement between the spacing bars and a head and a foot,a mattress frame adapted to be connected thereto and comprising end members terminating in depending portions,
and a fabric stretched between themembers,
spacing barsconnected to the depending.
portions adjacent to the lower ends thereof and constructed to form a housingspace between the same and the fabric for a receptacle, and a sliding receptacle carried upon said spacing bars for movement between the same and the mattress fabric.
4. In a bed structure the combination of a spring mattress frame comprising end bars terminating in depending members and a spring fabric stretched between said bars, side bars connecting the depending members together at each side and constructed to form between the same and the fabric a housing space for a receptacle, horizontal ways supported upon the side bars at right angles to and above the same, and a sliding receptacle adapted to be supported upon said ways between said bars and the spring mattress, said receptacle being of less length than the spring mattress section, and havlng a shiftable movement in opposite directions beyond said spacing bars.
5. A knockdown bed structure comprising a head and a foot, a mattress section detachably connected thereto, the same comprising transverse end bars terminating in depending members and a fabric stretched therebetween, spacing bars connected to the depending members and constructed to form a housing space between the same and the fabric for a receptacle, and a receptacle supported by said spacing bars for slidable movement between the same and the mattress, the construction being such that upon detaching the mattress section said depend ing members and spacing bars will support the same and said receptacle upon the floor.
6. A knockdown bed structure comprising a head and a foot, a mattress section detachably connected thereto, the same comprising transverse end bars terminating in depending members and a fabric stretched therebetween, spacing bars connected to the depending members adjacent to the ends thereof and constructed to form a housing space between the same and the fabric for a receptacle, cross bars secured to the spacing bars and adapted to form horizontal ways, anda receptacle supported by said cross bars for slidable movement between same and the mattress, the construction being such that upon detaching the mattress section said depending members and spacing bars will support the same and said receptacle upon the floor.
Signed at Chicago, Illinois this 31st day of May, 1921.
