. BUILDING. BLOCK. 1 r
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMU L ANDERSEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Eau Claire, in the county of Eau Claire and State of Wisconsin, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Building Blocks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
' The object of my invention is to provide an inexpensive efficient building block suitable as a unit for constructingwalls and having side surfaces especially adapted to hold wall plaster.
Generally stated, the invention consists of the novel devices and combinations of devices hereinafter described and defined in the claims.
It is a well known fact that small bits Of lumber in a mill or elsewhere are usually Wasted or used for kindling. My invention provides an important use for such odds and ends.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein like notations refer to like parts throughout the several views. r
Referring to the drawings Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a portion of two adjoining walls made from my improved building blocks';
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a single block; 7
Fig. 3 is a plan view of a similar block; and V Fig. l is a fragmentary view with parts broken away of two adjoining blocks show ing my locking key inserted.
The numeral 5 indicates the lengthy'tie membersof my building block and tithe short transverse cross members, which project slightly beyond the lengthwise edges of said tie members 5, affording grooves 7 by their said projections. The tie'members 5 are spaced widely apart to use as little lumber as possible and still assure-a strong block. The cross members 6 .are spaced slightly apart to form chinks 8 on the sides of the wall which, with the'said grooves 7, furnish a good surface for plaster to cling to.
The successive layers of my block are nailed'upon each other by nails 9 .or in any other suitable way. In the process of this nailing, the end of each layer is carefully Specification 6r Letterslatent' Patented-A 25,1922 Application fildAu'gust 23,;1920'. s riai' nopiosjsas. i

end of the block, and,'sincethe'tie' members are of equal length, a complementary proecting arrangement results at the opposite end of saidblock. When a wall is built, the projectingly arranged end of one block is set on the stepped end of another block and the successive steps and projections exactly fit.
A key 10 is inserted between the adjacent tie members 5 of two joined blocks, as shown in F 1g. 4, and locks said blocks together, giving'them the necessary solidity.
When a vertical end is needed for the ends of a wall or for a window casing 11, the
block may be sawed Off to form a fiat vertical edges fitting snugly together, and keysare fitted to the adjoining blocks of each layer.
Such a construction makes a strong sub stantial wall having both its sides well.
adapted to hold plaster, suitable for outside or inside use. 'The expense of such a construction is little, for waste odds and ends are used in the making of my blocks.
'VVhat I claim is I p 1. A unit building'block having comple-- mentary oblique ends fitting snugly and tightly with their respective complementary ends of other similar blocks to form a wall, said block comprising layers of long tie members and layers of short transverse cross members projecting slightly beyond the longitudinal edges of the said tie members and forming grooved side surfaces adapted to receive plaster.
2. In a building block, several alternate layers of lengthy tie members. and'several alternate layers of short transverse cross members projecting slightly beyond the lengthwise edges of said tie members to form grooved surfaces for plaster on the fastening the said members together with ing arrangement at the opposite end ofsaid' block enabling both ends of said block to fit perfectly into 'the complementary ends of similar blocks, r
3.}In a building block, several alternatelayers of lengthy tie members andseveralf two opposite sides of said block, means for r rangement at one end of said block, a com plementary oblique projecting arrangement at the opposite end of'said block enabling both ends of said block to fit perfectly into the complementaryends-=of similar blocks, and a locking key fitting between the adjacent tie members of two joined blocks to lock said blocks and hold them in position.
In testimony whereof I allix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
I SAMUEL ANDERSEN. Witnesses: V
