" GATE,
.the following is a specification, reference being had; therein to the accompanying drawings. 1 f
V This invention relates to gates and has for an objectto provide a gate with a swinging and a relatively sliding panel with improved means whereby the gate may swing to open position with the sliding panel in p in side elevation with the sliding panel tive view showing the any of its various slidable positions.
A further object of the invention is to provide agate having a sliding panel which opens relative to a hinged, or swinging, panel, producing by the actuation of the sliding panel, a smaller aperture for toot passengers, or the'like, andipermitting the swinging of the entire structure for the passage of vehicles, and the like.
A further object of-the'invention to provide improved elements and units of each of the two panels which will co-act to produce the completed structure,
lVith these and other objectsin view the device comprises certain novel elements, units, parts, combinations and functions as will be hereinafter morerfully described and claimed.
In the drawings:
Figure l is a view of theimproved gate inside elevation shown in closed position;
Figure 2 is a View of the improved gate moved to open position; 7
Figure 3 is a top plan view of the gate with the slidingpanel in open position, as
shown at Figure 2;
Figure 4 is atop plan view of the' improved gate opened upon the swinging panel; with the sliding panel at full extended position; e
Figure 5 is a detail fragmentary perspec construction of the several parts, and I Figure 6 is a detail transversesectional view, as indicated by line 66 of Figure 5.
Like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views. V
The improved gate which forms the subject matter of this application comprises a panel shown as an entirety at 10 hinged to r Specification of Letters Patent,

a supporting post 11in anyapproved man-- nor, as by the ears 12*carried by the panel engaging: upon pintles 13 carried rigidly by the post. The panel 1O maybe of anyv desired construction, but must comprise a inclined brace 15. p of the swingingpanel-isimmaterial to the present invention, dependent only upon top and: end rail 14 and'some means for llOlCllIIg thetwoin proper relation, as the The exactconstruction structural means for pivotally supporting the top bar which carries rollers 16 attached thereto in any approved manner, as by keepers 17 which may be applied in any manner, directly to the top bar 10 or to the end rail 14, or otherwise, the necessity being I that it be supported at the top rail. Through the'keepers 17 andf bearing uponthe rollers 16, a rail 18 of the sliding paneloperates,
preferably,though not necessarily, provided with a metal shoe 19, which makes immediate contact with the rollers 16. The rail 18, forming as it does the top railof the sliding panel, is completedvin its structure:
by meansof end bars 20 and such intermediate rails'21 as may be found desirable to complete the panel structure, the invention' being in no-way limited to the number of these rails or the use of cross bars 22 or other strengthening means; The end rail 14 ofthe swinging panel is also provided with) a keeper 23 secured to the railin'any ap-' 7 proved manner, as by the rivet 24: which resists the tendency of the sliding panel to swing upon the rail 18'as a pivot. The slide ing panel also carries a catch member 25 positioned to 'be engaged by a bail 26 carried by the. post 27, which is spaced from thego' w post 12 such a distance: as to permit the entire gate structure in its elongatedposition to swing between such posts and the latch" member 25130 engage and latch with the bail 26, I f
In operation, the
latch member 25. For the passage of foot gate as shown at -Figure" l is in closedposition and the panels latched by the engagement of thebail 26'with the ice.
passengers, or the like, the sliding panel is disengaged by raising the bail 26 and the panel slidably-moved longitudii'ially relative tothe swinging panel. JThis-opens an aperture as disclosed at Figure), for the passage 7 of foot passengers, orlthe like. lVhenthe gate is to'be opened topermit the passage of vehicles, or the like, it maybe opened Y 7 fromthe position as shown at Flgure swinging t0 the position shown. at Figure 4, or it be swung about the hinging of the swinging panel when the sliding panel is in the position shown at Figures 2 and This latter arrangement of parts is desirable at times of high wind, or the like, which makes the opening of the gate difficult or difficult to maintain the gate in open p0sition when the opening has been securing without fastening, furnishing, as it does, a balanced construction, so that the wind pressure is substantially equalized upon opposite sides of the hinging. V
lVhat I claim to be new is:
A combination swinging and sliding gate comprising a plurality of horizontal bars connected by end supports, a pivoted carriage, oneof the bars slidable upon the cargate is closed and depending sufficient to cooperate with the upright for bracing the structure intermediate its ends.
