Specification of Letters Patent; Y Patented pl'. 18, 1922.
Application led October A4, 1920'. Serial No. 414,646.
To all ich-w11. t 72mg/ concern.'
'Be it known that'l, F RED O. PEnMiN, a citizen of the United States, residing at 524 lVest One Hundred Twenty-third Street, in the city, county, and State of-NewgY-ork, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Amusement Devices, of which the following is a speciication.
This invention relates to a machine which is so constructed andoper'ated that it gives the appearance of birds flying in a horizontal vline andv has for Vits object kto provide means for causing said moving, objects to travel in a predetermined path'ofino-vement,V and further to provide operatingparts and other forms of constructiontozcause'these moving vobjects to stop when reaching their` ends of path of movement andreboundand again stop at points in their return'fmovement predetermined'by the inertia of'their rebound, oi-Lat points in their forward-path of movemeiitbefore they reach the' limitof their path of movement z-and again to provide means to ,adjustV said'movable parts to theirnormal positions` This invention 'consists of other novel fea;
tures of construction andV arrangements fof parts to -be hereinafter fully set forth and particularly pointed out in appended claims.
Invorder to clearlydescribe this invention reference must be had to vtheaccoinpanying drawings which taken inv connection withY this specification form part of this applica'- tion. Y Y
Like numerals of reference indicate like parts in the several figures-of the drawings,"
of which Fig. 1 is a front elevation of the invention;
Fig. Y2 'is a side elevation of same;
Figs. 3-4--5 are details of the operating tached thereto trunnions 5 to support beamsv 6--6a which are grooved to receive said trunnions and are fastened thereto bybolts 7 means; y i f A pluralityv of bearings 26fare attached-to beams ,Y6-.6a finto Vwhich are' placedjtubes 27`V which also pass through caps 8;said caps being counterpartsof beams 6-6".
Attached to beams 6+6EL are brackets 9 to which are pivoted pulleys v10; said pulleys having pendant hammers 11 integrally fastened thereto; said hammers registering with heads 12 of pins 13 when operated by cords 14 which pass downwardly to engage pulleys 15 and thence upwardly and over pulleys lthenceto hollow knob-17 into which they are fastened by suitable means Such 21S a knot 1S Shown at i8 Said pu-iieys A on Vfloor 22.- f
1 6are pivotedwithin housings 19 which are f i Y Ltasteiiedy yto counter 20:- said counterk beingsuppor'ted Vby uprights 2li-#21a which rest A It `will be' noted 'that knobs 17VV have iiitegralftherewith slianks-23 which Vare thread-A i edito receive tubes 24`whichyslide 'into pipes 25,;` said pipes beiiigfattached-'to-housing'fl as shown by a'threadgor other practical ling' separa-ted'by helical spring; while ini 'Figure 8 it will benoted that there aretwot. 1 helical .'springs 29-"30 spacedl apart"'byffv ymeans of cotter-pins 31;-said springs'serving as shock-absorbers when tubes 27 Y are thrust forward l or when counter direction, l
Integralwith bearings 26 are brackets 32 to which arefastenedone end of wires 33' while their opposite ends pass through bearings 26 above tubes 27 and horizontally across to beams 6L where they are fastened as shown'in Figures 1 and 9 respectively'.
Suspended from wires33 are carriages 34 with a pendant 35 attached thereto: said pendant receiving rods-36 on which are hrungV they recoil in.; a
objects suclif as` birds 37 which are fixed' thereto by collars 38 and set-screws 39 which' A are threaded intoY said collars to engagerods 36 said carriages being supported by sheavesl4() which are revolubly mounted in termediate carriages 34 and side-plates 41 by means of screws 42. The side-platesvhave fingers 43 horizontally integral therewith l and a flexible member 44 attached thereto in a vertical line for purposes to be clearly ,Y
described in another paragraph.
- Fastened to beams 6`6a are bracketsv 45-45a to which are pivoted' supports 46-V 46al for square 'tubes 47 to which are fixed pins 48; immediately in front of which are" lll numbers l-l as shown at :lid in Figure 1. These pins art as stopping means when the carriages rebound. or stop them while in their Vforward path oi.I movement7 and the numbers indicate the skill o't' the operator as shall be shown hereinafter.
'Passing downwardly from supports 'i6- lo are cords 50 which run over sheaves 51, thence horizontally to levers 52 which are pivoted through shelf 53 tor the purpose of releasing the movable objects and returning them to their normal positions by operating said levers forward to the broken line shown in Figure 2.
lllires S3 and tubes ll are parallel but are arranged a trifle out of horizontal as shown in Figure 1, for the purpose ot allowing the movable objects 37 to return to normal by their own gravity when released from pins 48.
ln order to operate this invention. tubes 2d are pulled outwardly by means of knobs `1T: this'in turn causes cords 1d to litt hammers 11 upwardly and strike heads 12 of pins 13 compressing springs 29 which encircle that portion ot tubes 2 which lie within chambers 54 ol' bearings 26 compres sing `springs 55 which lie intermediate pins 13 and 28 within said tubes 27 until ypins 13 register with pins 28 which are reduced at 28a forming shoulders 281 which normally register with Yflanges 27'a ot tubes 27. The arrangement 'of the pins, tubesand springs serve to slide7 (rather than thi-usw) carriages 3l `away from pins 28 on wires-33 while flexible members il bend to escape pins 18 while carriages 34; move horizontally until they register with studs 5G which are slidably mounted on wires 3B. unless said carriages stop before. reachingl said studs. The forward inertia o1 said carriages causes springs 5T to compress and recoil thus giving carriages 3l return inertia sullicient to move them backward until said ret-urn inertia is exhausted and each flexible member stops at one of the pins 48. while the number in 'liront of eachv pin indicates the skill of the operator. lVhen the operator reads the number with which he registers the person in charge of the machine moves levers in such a position as to cause cords 50 to lift supports L6-e462 upwardly far enough to release exible members le from contact with pins i8 and allow carriages 34 to return to normal.
There are six operating parts shown, while any number may be used and each part acts independently of the others.
By observing Figure 6 it will be seen that the trames are so constructed that they are Flexible and can be easily adjusted to any floor or ground by means of unions 58 which are threaded, at 59 into collars 60 and spreader's -3-l.
A salient feature of this invention is the laissais means ot' tightening wires as may be observed .in Figure l; said tightening means consisting ot threaded sleeves 61 which arc fastened to one end of wires and adjusted by check-nuts 62 which rest against brackets 32 oit bearings 26. lVhen said wires are tightened as above described. it will become necessary to adjust tubes l? parallel therewith, and for this purpose brackets Ll-lr have integral therewith lugs 63 through which pass set-screws 6l, the ends or which register with the under sides of supports t6-a6? to adjust said tubes parallel with wires 33.
in Figures 10-11-12 it will be seen that there are bosses (S5- 65a immediately under wires 33 integral .with pendants 35 for the purpose of preventing wheels. l0 oi .carriages 3ft from jumping said wires' in event that the operator` strikes a violent, blow ot hammersll and thereby prevents the normalmovement of said carriages. lt will be further noted that fingers v43 pass inwardly and Lmder square tubes 47 so that when the carriages rock7 said fingers will strike said tubes and quicklyv rebalance'said carriage. Af I rllhis invention may be constructed olV any material and madeany size deemedsuitable tor all thek requirement-s oit suclraydav vice? and while a preferred form ot mechanism is illustrated yand ,describech it is del sired to include in this,V application -all me; chanical equivalents and substitutes that lie within the yscope and pended claims. f Y i Having thus fully described this invention so that others skilled in the art 'tol which it appertains may be Yenabled to construct, and use the same, what l claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is :-V
