' Be it known that I, RALPH S, TYLER a citizen of the United States, and a resident of `Cleveland Heights Village, county of Cuyahoga, and 'State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement vin Paper- Cutting Machines, of which the following is a specification, the principle of. the invention being herein explained and the `best mode i-n which I have contemplated applying that principle, seas to distinguish 1t from Other inventions.. y
In machines of the class in hand, it has been found desirable, for `obvious reasons. to impart a transverse as well asa vertically reciprocable movement to `the knife which trims the stock, so as to impart a so--called shear stroke to such knife. This is Ordinarily accomplished by providing an inclined guideway in the frame in which the Vknife isthus vertically reciprocable, and "attach-ing tothe knife `or 'its carrier fa slide movable in said guideway, -so that as the knife is depressed, as in the cutting operation, itis simultaneously shifted longitudinally. In a machine thus constructed, however.V whe-re the vertical reciprocation of the knife or knife carrier is secured by connecting its respective ends with cranks Ona suitable crank shaft, the pull is 'all in a' downward direction, with the result that the slide block alternately tends to bear on the under side of the guideway and then on the upper side, as the knife cuts through the stock, particularly if the latter, as is usually the case, does not offer a uniform resistance.
The consequent chattering of the knife has proven :i serious operative difficulty in these machines which it is the object of the present invention to overcome by providing for the application of the power from the crank shaft to the knife in a direction more nearly parallel with the aforesaid guideway, thus eliminating the tendency to chatter. To the accomplishment of the foregoing and related objects, the invention, then, consists of the means hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out 'in the claims, the annexed drawing and the following descriptionl setting forth in detail certain mechanism embodying the invention, such disclosed means constituting, however, but one of various mechanical forms in which the principle Of the invention may be used. In said annexed drawing, the single figure there appearing is a front elevation, partly diagrammatic in character, of a power paper cutting machine embodying my present improvement.
The frame of the machine includes the usual table or bed 1 on which the stock, consisting of a pile of sheets of paper, is placed in order to trim the same. Vertically reciproca-bly held in suitable standards 2 that rise above said bed is the knife head or stock'f carrying the knife e. This stock also carries a resiliently supported presser bar or binder 5 which initially ,contacts with such stock on the downward stroke of the machine in order to hold the sheets in place pending contact of the knife therewith. At the right-hand end inthe Figure as shown the connections comprise a suitable rod 11, the ends of which are attached to the crank and head by universal oints .12 and 13 respectively, and in the prevailing .construction the connection at the left-handV end would be the same. In my present improved construction, however, instead ofdirectly connecting the rod 14 at the other end of the machine, i. e. that adjacent the inclined guideway 6, with the corresponding end of the knife head 3, I employ a toggle arrangement as illustrated, consisting of two links 16 and 17 pivotally connected together, said first named link being a universal joint 20 likewise serves to attach the other end of said rod to crank 10.
