Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. NELsoN, a citizen of the United States, lresiding at entralia, in the county of Lewis and State of Vashingt-on, having invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hoisting Apparatus, do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description of the same. N i
vThis vinvention relates to improvements in hoisting apparatus for actuating caloleways used in logging or for other analogous purposes.
The invention has for one of its objects the provision of hoisting apparatus of simple construction whereon a plurality of cables may be wound and unwound` either separately or simultaneously, whereby. a load may be raised, transported and deposited with facility and economy in construction, operationand power.
y A further object-ofr the invention is the provision of hoisting apparatuswhereby a load may be hoisted to clear the ground obstructions and may then be held at such elevation without/substantial additional .power being required to maintain the load in its elevated position or during its transportation.
The invention resides in the novel construction and adaptation of a power hoist arranged and provided to handle a logging cableway, as well as for general use as a hoist, as will be-fully described in the following specification, illustrated in the ac-v companying drawings, and finally set forth in the appended claims.
In said drawings, wherein like parts are designated by similar reference characters throughout the several views, Figure 1 is a pictorial view in side elevation of a .cableing my invention.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of said yhoisting apparatus, partly broken away, to show "certain portions in section.
Fig. 3 is .a view in side elevation of the same, parts 'being broken away.
Referring to Fig. 1, the reference numeral f 10 indicates the head-spar or spar-tree supporting one end of the apparatus and 11 indicates the tail-spar supporting the opposite end thereof. 12 designates guy-lines arranged in any desired or suitable manner.

way system and hoisting' apparatus embodyfrom the drum 15 of which the supporting line 16 of the lcableway extends through the upper sheave-block 17 which is secured to the spar-tree 10 and thence the line 16 passes to thetail-spar 11 where it passes through block 13 and thence returns as the so-called haul-back line (20, to the dependent member 21 of the carriage 22 where its end is secured. A haul-in line 23 extends from the drum 25 of the hoist 13 through block 26 on spar 10 and thence to the member 21 where its end is secured. Said carriage 22 is of the usual trolley-carriage construction, consisting in parallel plates with grooved traction wheels 22 rotatably mounted between the `plates and adapted to run on the supporting line 16 in apwell understood manner.
rReferring to Figs. 2 and 3,' illustrating cable or log hoisting apparatus, the
drum 15 carrying the supporting-line 16 of the cableway is mounted rigidly on arbor 27.
Said arbor is provided with loosely mounted gear wheels 28 and 30 on opposite sides of said drum 15,'which gear wheels are provided-with friction clutches 31 and 31', re- Y spectively, operative to engage with drum 15 vto actuate vthe latter in either rotary direction when either of said friction clutches is set against thedr-um by well known or suitable shifting devices 32 and 33, respectively, either of the manually operated type or by steamactuated devices, an operating lever being shown at' 34.
, The Vdrum 25 of the same diameter as drum 151s loosely mounted on arbor 35 and the gear wheels 36 and 37 on opposite sides of the drum are rigidly mounted or keyed on the arbor. Said drum v25 is shifted to engage friction clutch devices 41 onthe gear 36 to actuate the drum 25 in the direction indicated by themarrow on gear-36. A
VThe drive pinion 42 mounted on powershaft 43 and driven through power-crank 43 is in constant meshwith the gear wheels 28 'and 37, and the gear wheels 30 and 36 of correspondingv size on the a'rbors 27 and 35, respectively, are in meshv with each other. Both, said drums 15 and 25 .are provided with fbrake devices and operative mechanism, not shown, inthe usual manner.
To hoist a load, represented by 47, the drum 25 carrying the haul-in line may be held stationary, asby the brake, and the supporting line 16on vthe' drum 15 is hauled in by mainclutch 31 with the drum l5. The motive power is then transinitte'd from power-pin-l ion 42 to gear 'wheel' 28 which is actuated in the direction of the ariow on said gear wheel to haul in on line 16, which hoists the load into the air to' any desired height.
To convey the load toward the hoist the drums 15 and 25 aie actuated in opposite' directions which is accomplished by setting the friction clutch 41 to rotate the drum 25 in the direction indicated by the arrow on gear'36 and setting lthe friction clutch 31 to operate drum 15 in a contrary direction to that of drum 25, or indicated by the arrow on gear 30.. The gears 36 and 30 being in mesh and with the friction clutches 41 and 31 engaged with their respective drums the loadmay be held in the air by the interlocking` of the said gears throi'i'gh their tending lto rotate in opposite directions.-
To return the carriage to pick up another load the drum 25 is allowed to unwind the cable 23 through what tension there may be exerted thereon by the brake devices associated with ysaid drum 25 and by releasing the. friction clutchY 41 while the friction clutch 31 is engaged with gear 28 to cause the drum 15 to rotate in the direction of the arrow on gear 28. i y A. power drum 48 is alsov provided similar in most respects with drum 1,5v being rigidly mounted on Aits arbor. Said drum is provided with gear wheels 51 and 52 on opposite sides of said drum 48,`resp`ectiv'ely', which are in mesh with the respective gear wheels 28 and 3() andare likewise arranged with friction clutches 53 and 55, respectively, and clutch-actuating devices similar to those described and shown. Power on said drum 48 is applied through pinion 42 and intermediate gears 28 or 80, as the case may be, in a manner that will be. well understood. The
