STARTING DEVICE FOR ENGINES.
Application filed September 3, 1919.
T all whom it may concern.
Be it known, that I, ROBERT E. LEE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Starting Devices for Engines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of refermice marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in starting device for engines, and consists of a simple and ellicient device of this nature having various details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts which will be hereinafter fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings and then specifically defined in the appended claim.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this application, and in which:
Figure 1 is a ,view in elevation, parts being in section, and
Figure 2 is a section taken on line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a transverse fragmentary sectional view through the lower ends of the two cylinders showing the valve ar rangement.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by numerals:
1 designates a four cylinder engine, each cylinder provided with a sparking plug 2 adapted to be connected to a source of electrical supply (not shown), and leading in to the upper end of each cylinder is a pipe 3 connected to a shell 4; having a check valve therein, and each shell 4L is in turn connected to a pipe 5 which leads to the air chamber of a pump 6, which is shown in section in Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 18, 1922.
Serial No. 321,386.
Figure 2 of the drawings. Said pump is provided with a piston shown in dotted lines in Figure 1, and connected to a stem 7 having a handle 8 at its end. A gas priming pump 9 either integral with or secured to the casing of the pump 6 has a stem 10 connected to the common stem 7 of the air pump through the medium of the plate 11. A pipe 12 leads from the gas priming pump to and communicates with the fuel supply pipe 13, which gets its supply from, the tank 14. A suitable check valve is mounted within the shell 15 to which the pipes 12 and 13 are connected.
For introducing air into the cylinder 6 any approved tlype of inlet valve, as indicated at 18 in igure 3, may be employed. For controlling the passage of fuel from the cylinder 9 to the cylinder 6, or the pipe 5, any approved type of check valve, as indicated at 19 in Figure 3, may be employed.
In operation, the spark is first retarded in the usual manner and the operator by actuating the priming pump may cause a charge of gas and air to be drawn into the cylinders of the pumps, mixed and forced into the various cylinders of the engine, the check valves tending to prevent the backward flow of same.
By the provision of a starter embodying the features of my invention, it will be noted that the device is of light weight and of simple construction, and may be easily and quickly attached to automobiles of different kinds at a minimum of expense.
l-V hat I claim to be new is:
A priming pump comprising juxtaposed cylinders of like length but different diameter, a fuel intake pipe communicating with the smaller cylinder, an air intake for the larger cylinder, synchronizing pistons in the cylinders, means to intermix the intaken air and fuel, and means to convey the intermixed gases to a point of use.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature.
ROBERT E. LEE.
