CHANGEABLE EXHIBITOR.
Application filed February 17, 1921.
1 o all 1/ 71 m may concern Be it known that I, Gnonon J. MoTTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Washington, in the District of Columbia, have invented a Changeable Exhibitor, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to'a changeable exhibitor of the type in which a number of exhibit members may be individually exhibited and re-exhibited automatically.
Heretofore, in changeable exhibitors, complicated mechanism has been required to accomplish the exhibition of the members to be viewed, and by reason of this fact the devices have been impractical and are not suited for commercial purposes. However, the present invention provides a compact changeable exhibitor which comprises a movable exhibit carrier removably mounting a number of exhibit members, and mechanism is arranged for moving the carrier and shift ing the exhibit members from one position on the carrier to another in such manner and arrangement that each exhibit member is individually displayed in transit.
Another feature of the invention is the provision of an exhibit carrier moving in such relation to the shifting movement of the individual exhibit members that the said members are successively displayed with one side facing the observer and are regrouped and displayed with the reverse side facing the observer; by reason of this the capacity of the exhibitor is doubled.
Also, the invention has the additional feature of providing for electrically illuminating the exhibit members only during the interval of display whereby great economy in the operation of the device is effected.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 isa perspective view of a complete changeable exhibitor embodying the present invention.
Figure 2 is a front elevation of the mechanism of the exhibitor shown in Fig. 1.
Figure 3 is a top plan view of the mechanism.
Figure at is a perspective view of the shifting elements in assembled relation.
Figure is a vertical section of one of the exhibit members on the line 55 of Fig. 3.
Figure 6 is a view, partly in vertical sec tion, of the exhibit member shown in Fig. 5.
Figure 7 is a transverse section on the line 77 of Fig. 5.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented A t 1922 Serial No. 445,639.
In detail: The invention, as herein shown for the purpose of illustration only, comprises a casing A having an exhibiting head B.
Upon the bottom 1 of the casing A and secured in place by bolts 2, or other suitable means, is a pedestal 3 having an integral central spindle 4 upon the upper end of which is mounted a stationary exhibiting platform 5 secured to the spindle 4 byany suitable means 6 extending through the platform 5 and into the end of the spindle 4:. The platform 5 is provided with a diametrical trackway 7 along the rear side of which is a vertical wall 8 which, as will hereinafter be described, formsa support for the exhibit members while on display. In the trackway are two contacts 9 and 10 both of which are shown as spring tongues facing in the direction of movementof the exhibit members thereacross and fastened as at 11 and 12, respectively.
Fitting down over the spindle 4t and seating on a ball thrust bearing 13 carried by the shoulder 14 on the pedestal 3' is a sleeve 15, the upper end of which is flanged as at 16 and has secured thereto a disc 17 which is concentric with the platform 5 and, in its upper face, is provided with radial slots 18 forming trackways for the exhibit members. These radial slots 18 are so spaced on the disc 17 that opposite slots are on the same diametric line whereby a slot on each side of the disc 17 always aligns with the trackway 7 of the platform 5.
The edge or periphery of the disc 17 is notched as indicated at 19 for each radial slot 18. The disc 17 forms the exhibit carrier and is moved through being engaged by a pawl 20 pivoted as at 21 to an arm 22 and spring pressed into engagement with the notches 19 by the leaf spring 23 carried by said arm 22. The arm 22 reciprocates through a bearing member 24 swiveled as at 25 to the plate 26 for universal movement. said plate 26 being secured to the back 27 of the casing A. A spring 28 confined between the collar 29 and bearing member 2a maintains the arm 22 in an extended posi tion. At the opposite end from the pawl 20 the said arm 22 is pivotally connected with the crank arm 30 of a crank shaft 31 and is retained in this relation by any suitable means such as a cotter pin 32. The crank shaft 31 is mounted in bearings 32 and 33 having feet 34: and 35, respectively, secured to the side wall 36 of the casing A. At the free end of the crank shaft 31 and bearing against the bracket 32 on the inner side is a lug member 37 fixed to the said crankshaft 31 by a set screw 38.
The lug member 37 extends upwardly through a cross piece 39 as indicated at 40, said cross piece being mounted above the disc 17 and extending between the-side walls 36 and'4t1 of thecasing A andwith its inner edge parallel to and in vertical alignment with the forward edge of the trackway 7.
Secured to the upper face of the crosspiece 39 and at right'anglesto the crankshaft 31 is a guide member 42 having a T-shapc slot in which the similarly shaped base of a cross-head 44 is: guided. The cross-head 4st carries a right angle arm 4-5. which moves the'entire len'gthof the trackway 18 which happens to'align with the trackwa-y 7 of' hc platform 5. A spur 46 having a roller 4-7 contacts 'withthe lug 37 to move the crankshaft31 to rotate thedisc exhibit carrier 17.
The cross-head 44;, on its upper face, is provided with a stud 4l8-over which is slip ped one'endof a connecting rod-49 and se cured'by a washer 50-and nut 51. Theother end ofconnecting rod 49 is slipped over a pin 52on the enclof. a cranlr arm 53=and is held by a cotter 'pin The crank arm is keyed, FPlilflGCl 'or' otherwise fixed to a vertical shaft-55 mountedinbearings 57 and '58 and is provided, intermediate its ends,
with a worm wheel .56 also fixed to the said shaft 55. Meshing with the worm wheel 56 isa worm;59 on the drive shaft of-a motor 60 secured to=thebottom 1. ofthe casing A. A wire 61 supplies current, through the medium of wires GQan-d (33' to the motor 60 and-contacts 9 and 10. 7
One type of :exhibit member is clearly shown in Figs. 5-to 7 indetail and comprises aframe of rectangular formation having the base (is carrying an insulating shoe 65 on its bottom surface and in which is'mounted-a socket 66of the well knowncandelabra type for receivingan incandescent bulb 67 a reflecting depression 68 being formed around the bulb to distributethe illumination upwardly. The contacts 69 and 70 for this are set into plates 71 and 72, respectively, of conducting material divided by the insulation 73, said plates being carried on theshoe65. Integral with the base 64-, are the uprights and top 74, 75, 76 and 77, re spectively, which form frames for trans parent sheets78 and 79- on opposite sides and adjacent which advertising or other display placards are inserted and held by spring clips 80. The sides and 76 are dovetailed 'as at 31-to receive and retain the sli-d able removable side member 82.
Thefront wall of the casing A is indicated at 83 and may carry a switch 84L for turning the current on and off from the device. Also, to afford access to movable parts a door panel 85 latched as at 86 is provided in the front and a similar door 87 is placed in the top 88 of the casing A.
Projecting up vertically from the top 88 of the casing A and having a centralexhibit frame opening C with two fixed side panels D and E is a front piece 89 for the exhibiting head B, the back of which is closed by the curved member 90 while the top consists of a hinged plate 91 which may be lifted to insert or remove the exhibiting members,
The operation is as follows:
The exhibit members are disposed in the slots or traclrways 18 ofthedi'sc 17 throughout half thedisccr exhibit carrier with the exception ofthe slot indicated at G in Fig. 3, one also being placed in thetrackw'ay 7 of the platform 5, the mechanism first being brought to the condition wherein arm 3 4:5 is in the position shown in F 3. After this has been accomplished the current is switched on and reciprocates the cross-head tiff with the result that the arm 45 moves" an exhibit member into thetrackway 7-displacing the one thereinin'to the slot Gand as the arm returns to the end of its stroke roller 47 of spur 46 engageslug 37 to-move-crankshaft 31 and-turn thedisc exhibit carrier 17 so that another slot registers withthe-trackway 7, whereupon the operation is repeated. in this. way the exhibit members are successively removed from the disc 17 onto platform 5 where :they are displayed, and then moved onto the disc 17 again but in such position that the nexttime they come around the reverse face displayed Which makes it'possible to use a double face extheless to be understood that I am inno way limited by said description except in so far as the appended claims define the principle thereof.
